The twentieth annual state Conference on Youth and Community Service will be held April 18-20 in Chicago. The three-day meeting in Hotel Sherman is expected to attract 1,500 adultfkfrom all sections of the state. Theme of this year's sessions will be "Today's Individual." The Illinois Department of Public Welfare in conjunction with the Big Brothers and Sisters association of* Illinois sponsors the Annual conference. AID TO SCHOOLS Recommendations of the Illinois School Problems commission, created by the sixty-sixth General Assembly, have been submitted to the state legislature. The commission recommended, among other things, an increase in state aid to public schools from 8100,419,000. the present two-year appropriation, to $124,000,000 for 1951-53. It also called for elimination of school townships, as has ben earlier recommended by various state survey groups. SHOOTING PRACTICE Out of range shooting on hunting marshes is wasteful of waterfowl as well as lead according to the Ininois Natural HiBtory survey, at Urbana. Not only does such shooting result loss of waterfravl through cripp^ng; it scatters undue amounts of shot pellets in concentration areas where wild .geese and ducks pick them up in their feeding and later die of lead poisoning that usually follows, the survey showed. TRAFFIC CONTRfUr A new state-wide organization known as the Illinois Traffic Safety council was formed in Springfield recently at a meeting of civic, fraternal, patriotic and labor representatives. Devoted to reduclag highway accidents, the council resulted from a recommendation made last year by Adlai E. Stevenson that a conference be called to discuss traffic safety.
