The game, a part of the wornt^ 9 carnival held on the grounds, flra a whole new set of rules . . . all of them made up by the women, The , men were required to use right hands only if left handed and vice versa. A few more handicaps were set up to make sure the women won and since several husbands played opposite their wives, they perhaps thought it was expedient to lose. Bob Widen and his wife, Jane, will reside in Wonder Lake this winter at the Petersen home next to the Handy Pantry on the black top road. They will move to the Petersen place Sept. 1. Indian Ridge Meeting The annual meeting of the Indian Ridge subdivision association will be held the second Sunday in September. All residents and owners of property in the subdivision should be present to discuss various problems and to decide on solutions* liets Leave Seen John and Juanita Widen will be in Wonder Lake for thirty aays, starting Sept. 1. John will have a 30-day leave at that time. He is stationed at Tacoma, Wash., with the- Air Force. He was recalled to the Army about a year ago. Also stationed at Tacoma is former resident Arthur Thorns, who resided in McHenry at the time he went back into service. Thorns has only recently returned the states after a sojourn in ^Korea. His wife and sons are in Tacoma. The former Helen Thorns, was seriously Injured in --an automobile accident last year and is still using crutches to wplk. Attention, Women Sewta* Mrs. Inez Krueger will be hostess Thursday at 8 p.m. to all women of the area who are interred in bowling in Wonder Lake teams this winter in League play. Those wishing more information about this may telephone Mrs. Krueger. The bloodmobile was in Woodstock Monday and Tuesday to collect blood for the.soldiers in Korea. On Wednesday, Aug. 8, the team beat a Holy Name team by a score of 31-5. This will be the next long-term project. Such a project will require a large sum of money which can only be accumulated by large donations. Officers of the society know that snch big money does not exisit at Wondeb Lake but they feel that some of the mem bers know persons who do have large sums that could be donated for this project. This offers an unusual opportunity to the people of our community to hear the best in Gospel music. The choir numbers thirty a forty voices, under the leadership of Mr. Burton E. Hedstrom. There will be a style show, featuring garments made by the girls, a program and a homemade cookie sale. The Achievement day will be held Aug. 20 in Harrison school at 8 p.m. 'Stminer Social Fosters; and tickets for tie Men's club summer social are now available. Members of the club have them or they can. be secured at the Wonder Lake Cleaner's. The summer social, w|iich includes a dance, will be held in the American Legion hall. McHenry, Aug. 25. Don Stadfeld and his band wilf play. Funds derived from the social will be used to purchase athletic equipment for the Wonder Lake children. The next meeting of the Men's club will be held Aug: 21 in the Legion hall at 8:30 p.m. Meetings are. regularly, every first and third Tuesday of the' month. Paper Drive The Boy Scouts of Wonder Lake are having a paper drive in order to raise funds to buy camping equipment tor the troop. Gospel Chnrch Sews There was a record attendance in our Sunday Bible school last Sunday, Aug. 12, to hear the assistant pastor of the Moody Memorial church, the Rev. Bob Murfin, deliver a most interesting and h ea r t-gripping message. There was also a capacity crowd at the morning worship service, with many visitors from various places. Paul F. Anderson and Miss Helen Hufstutler brought much appreciated messages iu song. In the evening, home talent gave a fine program of? Gospel music. ' The Vacation Bible school has just started, with a good attendance and will continue over Friday, Aug. 24. Girls and boys in Aug. 22 has been set as the date when the directors Of the McHenry county Theatre Guild will decide which of two plans now under study will be carried out next season. Both plans were discussed in detail at a meeting held last week. One of the proposed programs would call for the showing of a production by the Threshold Players, a well known amateur group from Glencoe for the past quarter of a century. Representatives of that group who were- present suggested that an acting group be formed in McHenry county to give several plays each season to take the place of a professional company. The second plan calls for a resident company on its own. with ticket support from the Theatre Guild. The executive board will make recommendations at the next meeting. New directors recently added to the Guild include Mr. and Mrs. John Torrence, Mr. and Mrs. Kmil INCREASES GRANTED TELEPHONE COMPANY EFFECTIVE AUG. 16 Authorization was made to the mitaols Commercial Telephone company last week to raise subscribers' rates by 91.183,000. The order of the state Commerce Commission provided that increases be deferred in fifty-three of the company's 222 exchanges until service is improved. The Illinois Commercial recently completed conversions dial equipment in the Won4# Lake-Ringwood vicinity. The company, which serve# about tOO communities in central, southern and western Illinois, petitioned last fall for authority to put into effect higher charges amounting to $1,266,869. Increases granted become infective on the first billing data after today, Aug. li, except where the deferments were ordered. Officials of the company said study would be required to determine the average monthly increases In customers' bills.
