In fact, some authorities, after surveying statistics, maintain that persons with low blood pressure who have passed middle age can expect a longer life than those with high blood pressure, ""other things being equal, observes a HEALTH TALK of the educational committee of the Illinois State Medi- .^<1 society. Hypotension - Jtke .medical word for low tftodd pressure. The prefix "hypo" stems from the Greek word meaning "under." In low blood pressure, the pressure is under the normal average pressure for the individual. There is an average normal Mood pressure for each person, depending; on age, sex, body ^ " e i g h t a n d c o n s t i t u t i o n ; a n d ' activity level. The average Is obtained from thousands of persons without disease; it must, therefore include persons with pressures both below and above the accepted figure, but all healthy. A low blood pressure, in the absence of other symptoms, is not necessarily serious nor does it mean that disease is present. Low blood pressure is found in Wealthy persons. Women are more likely to develop it than men. Some persons with marked lowering of physical stamina, are found, 4* examination, to have low blood pressure. While this person may be underweight and 'possess poor muscular tone, he is otherwise nbrmal. It is when he tries to outdo the physical prowess of his friends, as in golf or ' dancing, that trouble appears, inly'Uding such symptoms as dizziness, apprehension, numbness of hands and feet, and pains resembling neuralgia in various parts -of the body. Since low blood pressure can, occur in health and disease, the condition becomes an individual problem. A physician must decide on its significance after careful study. If the condition is not abnormal, it is a matter of understanding it and of learning not to overdo physically. In some emotional distrubances, low pressure may disappear when the emotional situation is straightened out. Low blood pressure may also be present la persons who have literally "knocked themselves out" with excessive playing, late hours, or overwork. These individuals jsre tried in the morning and gain ^jftysical momentum as the day , progresses. In this person, adjustment to conditions, a balancing of work, or a rest will restore the pressure t& the level normal for the individual. If you're feeling low, tired or depressed, see your doctor. If the diagnosis is low blood pressure alone, don't worry about it. Let him Mil you how your activities should be adjusted to the ability of your physical and mental structure to carry the load. Trust your doctor. Hell know whether this is a condition peculiar to you or, If not, what to do to correct It. HEART EXHIBIT TO BE HELD AT SCIENCE MUSEUM The Museum of Science and Industry will open its heart to visitors this summer when an exhibit now under construction for the Chicago Heart association is completed. Expected to be ready sometime in June, the exhibit features an enormous heart, sixteen feet high, which visitors may walk inside and see the intricate muscle and valve structure, the auricles and ventricles and even hear the muffled sounds of a. normal heart beat. Using modern display techniques, the heart and circulation of the blood will be portrayed, with particular emphasis on the new hope which today's research is bringing to the victims ot heart disease. Designed by the Illustration Studios of the University of Illinois, the exhibit will constitute another unique chapter in presenting the story of man in relation to the health sciences which was begun three years ago in the now world-famous exhibit on the story of human conception and development, "The Miracle of Growth."
