LOTS ON THE BAY .. - - j By Dorothy jDavis Lait weekend our fleet went to Long Lake f<?r the annual Long Lake-Plstakee regatta. Of course, the weatherman predicted rain, but despite his warnings it turned out to be a very nice weekend With plenty of sun and wind! At 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon the first race began. There was a medium wind that brought Jack Deroche with Y-3 in first, Sid Peterson skipping Y-27, in s e c o n d , and t h e P o m e r s k i brothers sailing T-13 in third. Saturday night was the dinnerdance for the yacht clubs held in our clubhouse. A very delicious dinner of prime ribs of beef was served by Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Mraz, who were co-chairmen for the evening. After the dinner, dancing followed by the P.Y*C. band. The Sunday race began at 9:50 a.m. with a very heavy wind, which surprisingly only tipped over a few of the boats all day long. That race, Bill Fletcher skipping Y-88 came in first, Jack Deroche, Y-3, registered a Second, and Bob Mr^z, of Y-77 finished third. After that race all the sailors went on shore for a picnic lunch prepared for them by the people of Long Lake. Between the "C" races, the junior class fleet held their race. This fleet is composed of sailors fifteen years or younger sailing hagerty boats. Tommy Cooper of L.L.Y.C. walked off ijrith the first place trophy, whil? <uh" Buddy Mraz copped second place. Nancy Schmid beat P.Y.- C.'s Billy Stark to the finish line to take third honors. Sunday afternoon the wind was still rather strong and Bill Fletcher and Jack Deroche came in the same order as they did in the morning race, while Norman Reese, with Y-27, took third. According to the point system, which was used to determine the winner of the regatta, Jack Deroche claimed first place, Bill Fletcher, second place, and Norman Reese, third place. Paul Janesch took fourth place for Long Lake. Among the other trophies that were awarded were the Mark Fisher Memorial trophy won by Jack Deroche, and the visitin? skippers' trophy accepted for P.Y.C. by Frank Waters. GOSSIP Mrs. Allen W. Keenen, daughter- in-law of the N. L. Davises of Pistakee Bay, enjoyed a visit with them at their home, while her husband, Lt. Keenen, is in Europe witl/ F.A.C. Lt. Keenen is a pilot of a B-50 bomber. Bill Fisher was awarded the "demasting trophy" at the Long Lake regatta as he experienced % stroke of bad luck when One of the stays on his boat broke and the mast fell down. Connie Miller started off the second with a pass and moved to second on Winn's single. A passed ball put 'em both in scoring position and both scored. Here's how. Gordon Miller flied to right and both runners stayed put. Pickering was safe on a fielder's choice that nailed nobody and Connie scored. Winn scored when Smith's harmless looking grounder hit the edge of the grass and bounced over Darling's shoulder. Marchetti struck out three men in the third, but things happened in between the KO's. Katzenberg singled with two down and advanced when Connie Miller was plunked by a pitch. Winn's single to right scored Katzenberg and moved Connie to third. Gordon Miller dpubled to. left to score two runs. --Game Tightens-- Now the score was 5 to 0 and the Merchants set out to change that nuthin'. Richie Miller got a wild streak, walking Zagnoli, Marchetti and Don Freund. In fact, a wild pitch had moved the first two batters along before Don got t>is pass. Darling* grounded out to Kuecker, Zagnoli scoring. Kreuger went down swinging. Morton hashed a line '-»uble to left to score Marchev** and Freund. John Knox cut at a third strike and that was all. Richmond added two more runs in the fourth as Kuecker, Vern Miller and Connie each singled around an error at short. Minor flare-ups occurred as the game progressed, but scoring was all over for the day. Richie ^filler was pretty cute at mixing up his pitches, but you can't say the Merchants didn't know what their bats were for. Out of eleven strikeouts,, ten went "down swinging. Richmond V.
