HENRY L COWLIN Judge of County Court of • McHenry County, Ulnois RAYMOND D. WOODS County Clerk of McHenry County, nnini« JOSEPH X. WAYNNB Attorney for Petitioners McHenry, Illinois. By W. H. Tammeos Dayton Field, Hartland township, said he had tile on hand last winter from three different sources to tile out a field. Two stood up well, but one bunch completely crumbled from frost action. In case you don't know it, there is a world of difference in tile. If. the seller can't give you the (ASTM) American Society of Testing Materials, rating on th« tile you buy he shouldn't get y o u r b u s i n e s s . F r o m f o u r t c twelve-inch standard quality til*1 should stand 800 pounds crushing strength by the three edge bearing method and 1,200 pound? crushing strength by the sand bearing method. Clay tile should have a maximum of 13 percent absorption and concrete tile ip percent by the five-hour boiling test. Larger tile should have a greater crushing strength up tc 1,500 pounds and 2,300 poundon 36-inch tile. TTie absorption would be the same as smaller tile. Extra quality drain tile foi putting in deeper than six feet should stand 1,100 pounds and 1,600 pounds crushing strength by the two methods mentioned above. Clay tile should have a maximum of 11 perecnt and concrete only 8 percent absorption. Tile should be straight edged, round and free from cracks, chips, and lime popouts. A question that is often asked is, what kind of tile should we use in peat soils. As lonp as they meet A.S.T.M. specifics^ tions it doesn't make much difference. Concrete tile should be extra quality because of the highly alkaline action of the soil. Clay tile is not affected by it. Color of tile has no affect on quality. Clay tile should have no flaking. Concrete tile should be solid and not honey-combed. Any tile should give a good clear ring when tapped with a hammer. This is the time when pastures and hay meadows should be allowed to grow rapidly. Do not cut for hay now or pasture shoift during September if you want to avoid winter killing.' This helps roots of the legunves to fill up with reserves--Hio the squirrel storing nuts in lac tree. Legume roots sKoalu get a good belly full now.' You can cut in October O.K. Paul Whalen of Northern Illinois Public Service, recently told me farmers are arguing that cutting alfalfa too young will hurt it. This was in connection w i t h g e t t i n g h a y c u t y o u n g while it's good quality. An old publication put out ^ 1930 says alfalfa cut in bud stage will thin out the stand. This is no argument, however, to cut hay when you get darn ?ood and rdady, meaning full bloom or later. All publications tfy the ideal time is one-tenth bloom stage. I visited in Ohio where a pablum and dried alfalfa meal plant is located where alfalfa is cut every time it gets a foot root. The only complaint I heard on the part of the county agent 'here was the selling off the PLA1NBEAL land of all this excellent organic matter and plant food. He did hot indicate that early cutting hurt the stand. Frequent application of phosphate ana potasn Is important. ^ *.tr Page Nina "Food control for 46 centuries," a contribution to the history of price fixing, was written by Mary G. Sounds like normal gangster doings. In order to prevent extortion, a group of "grain inspectors" were appointed' to oversea and keep accounts. Sounds like O.- P.S. In Rome 301 A.D., during high prices, maximum prices were set by Diocletian on all commodities and services including failures in the same attempts. Her summary says, "The history of government limitation of price seems to teach one clear lesson: That in attempting to ease the burdens of the people in a time of high prices by artificially setting a limit to them, the people are not relieved but only exchange one set of ills for another which is greater. These ills are (1) Withholding wages. History says it was a goods from market because consumers being in the majority the price*are in their favor.
