Americanism ^Amerteiuiism is a word ttiit has many meanings to many people. ,To the foreign-born newcomer to our country it may mean learning the language and the ways of a wonderful new country. To these people it means being absorbed, body and soul, into the land of their dreams--a land where one dares to express a political opinion without fear of reprisals. Americanism means a land where their children can grow strong physically and mentally -- strong enough to dream that some day one of them could be President. A land where they know that their children are not pre-destined to become shoe-cofeblers or lawyers solely by right of birth. They can reach for the stars and <ret them, too, if fhey are ambitious enough to climb the long, long stairs that lead to the bright star of success. ' Americanism to you and to me is a way of life, a very wonderful way of life where the standard of living is set by our own desire and willingness to attain our goal. To the American Legion Auxiliary, Americanism means helping children in the schools to understand and appreciate their heritage of Americanism. The j Auxiliary has > distributed flag j codes to children in the grade and high schools. They have aided the foreign-born adults in i citizenship classes throughout the country. They have helped to rid the schools of Communistinfluenced literature and are working with city and state in weeding out Communist*. The Auxiliary in the state of Illinois awards a set of World Book encyclopedia as first prise in a contest children eft th4 subject of "Americanism" as forth in an essay.
