Although grass aps dormant during the winter, ttially there is considerable root velopment during this period. ^A^id because McHeniy area winters are hard on lawns, you will Jwant to take certain steps now, early spring to replenish the >toil and renew the vigor of your |grass. The three operations listed beow are basic in giving your establawn a ffeslt^start. For tips n building a new lawn and mainainlng a lawn that's the envy of our neighborhood, follow t our ly articles. I 1. Rake -- Give your lawn a thorough raking, preferable with a lawn broom or springtooth rake. This will lift the matted grass, preparing it to receive fertilizer. 2. f ertilize -- Winter weather leaches rriUch plant food from the soil. "By springtime, the soil is often lacking necessary plant nutrients. Apply a complete fertiliser evenly. 3. Roll -- As soon as the soil is dry enough, toll your lawn to re-establish a firm contact between the soil and grass roots which have became loosened by the thawing and freezing of spring. Fertilize Your Lawn To carry out the most effective fertilizing program for building your lawn and maintaining a ftealthy turf after growth has keen established, it is essential that the characteristic functions the three primary plant food Elements - NITROGEN, PHOSPHOROUS and POTASSIUM - { *l>e understood. Because soil con- | £ it ions and the nutrient require- I nienls of different grasses vary i * greatly there is no single rule for t -fertilization. It is generally true, j t however, that all soils should be ' £ lectUized before grass seed is I ^ ~A sou analysis teat, wfekd) I ** we will be happy to make at •our store, is a helpful guide in determining the plant foods which 1 ^our soil needs. Because phosphorous stimulates root growth and potassium helps strengthen stem and leaf growth, It is important that fertilizers containing a high percentage of these plant nutrients be added to the soil before seeding. It is usually advisable to add some nitrogeneous fertilizer also. Do not use a highly nitrogeneous fertilizer in preparing the seed bed. Nitrogen stimulates stem and leal production and if supplied too generously at this stage may cause over-stimulation of foliage and under-development of the roots. Generally speaking, sandy soils need liberal quantities of phos phorous and potassium, while heavier soils need less of each. Both types of soil should receive some nitrogen. The fertilizer should be distributed evenly over the surface and mixed thoroughly with the top four to six inches of soil. This encourages deep root development because the grass roots are forced to extend deep into the soil for nourishment. How To Apply Fertilizer Two important problems in the application of fertilizer are even distribution and avoiding burning the grass. Uneven distribution is not only wasteful, but it is also harmful to the grass. In those areas that receive little fertilizer the grass becomes weak. Sections which receive too much fertilizer become burned or the first lush green growth wears off and results in patchy, weed-ridden sad due to over-stimulation. For; these important reasons application of fertilizer with a spreader is much more economical and effective than half-hearted scatterings by hand. Easily regulated controls release only the exact amount of fertilizer you specify and distribute it evenly over the lawn, assuring you a healthy green turf for your efforts. As a further precaution to avoid burning the grass, avoid application of fertilizer when the grass is wet or even moist. It is usually advisable to avoid early morning or late evening applications, therefore, because of the dew on the grass. Watering the grass after fertilizing is desirable ti wolrk the nutrients down to the roots. Complete (tee of l/f'i Poultry Remedies at Wattles Drag Store, McHenry, III. 42-tf The present session of the Illinois Legislature is called the "68th Illinois General Assembly." How does this happen to be the "68th" regular session? Well, the General Assembly was created by the Illinois Constitution of 1818 (superseded later by the Constitutions of 1848 and 1870). The first General Assembly convened in 1818. Since then, in every odd numbered year from 1819 to 19B3, the Illinois General Assembly has met in regular sessions. Hiat makes the present session the "68th" Illinois General Assembly. The first Illinois General As sembly convened in the state's first capitol at Kaskaskia in 1819. The second to the tenth General Assemblies were held at the state's second capitol at Vandalia. In 1839 the state capitol was removed to Springfield principally through the influence of Abraham Lincoln who was then a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from New Salem, located near Springfield. There has been no recent move to change the location of the state capitol. But whenever the Springfield hotels appear unaccommodating to the members of the legislature the threat is raised of a removal of the state capitol to another place. On several occasions bills to this effect have been introduced with the primary purpose of slapping the hotel operators on the wrist. But on what days is the 68th General Assembly In session ? And when will it end? Since Jan. 7, when the present session convened, the two branches of the General Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives) have met only one or two days each week. The principal legislative days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Not until April will Thursdays be added to the weekly schedules. In May and June, four day sessions will he held. But not until the last two weeks in June will the legislature be on a full time, five or six-day week. Of course, there will be the final all night stand on the thirtieth of June when the clock will be stopped at five minutes before midnight so that the last minute bills may be passed to become effective on July 1 Only two or three of the 204 members of the Illinois General Assembly have moved to Springfield for the current session of the legislature. The rest of the members remain at their homes when the General Assembly is not in session, arriving by car, I train or plane on the eve of each legislative day, and leave the capitol jwveach journed. Those wishing to see the Illinois General Assembly In action in the near future should plan to be in Springfield on a Tuesday Or Wednesday. ADULT FABMEHS* CLASS VISITED * PIG HATCHERY As a part of the ten meetings on. swine production for- the adult farmers' class being held at the high school vocational agriculture department, a trip was made to the pig hatchery at the Fin and Feather farm near Elgin on Monday afternoon, March 9. Ten freshmen agriculture students accompanied the adults and their Instructor, William Pictor. Adults making (he trip were James Curran, Ray Etten, Clarence • Freund, Leo King, Leo J. -Smith, Art Stilling. Charles Stilling, Harry Stilling, Jerome Stilling, Charles ,Weingart, Clarence Young and Bill Yung. Pig hatcheries are the modern application of animal science to the problem of , providing a supply of pigs of weaning age economically for farmers to feed out for market. If enough thrifty pigs can be weaned per sow, both the pig hatchery man and the farmer can make some profit on the market hog. "The farmer saves the time and labor of raising small pigs. In case his average pigs saved per sow are five or less, he should save money. The pig hatchery is big business. Between fifty and sixty sows farrow from 500 to 560 pigs per month in one large building. This requires a total of 400 sows for the continuous operation. The pigs are sold by weight at eight weeks of age. Last month over $8,000 worth of weaning pigs were sold and the hatchery has orders for all the pigs it can possibly j>r$luce through this August. **' H mumsle; mumble/ \ ITtSTVOUKl/Qn 1.
