It's worse than the boy who dropped his bubble gum $n the flo*r~4n thi h e n h o u s e . - - - -- • Let's try to see what each difa ferent government agency is «supposed to do. They are P.M.A.. pS.C.S. and F.H.A. The P.M.A. dr K, Production and Marketing adoministration (not to be confused iwith Pure Milk association) ha? qthe jo(| °f handling corn loans a and purchase agreements for the ijC.C.C. ! or Commodity Credit w Corporation agricultural conserevation payments for conservation practices completed according to {that program. They also supcri vised emergency purchase of hay efor drouth states last l'all. The rcounty committee consists of IBert Bridges, John Slavin and eClint Martin. ! S.C.S. or Soil Conservation Service furnishes trained technicians, including farm planners, ! mappers and drainage engineers to the McHenry County Soil Conservation district. The district prepares conservation farm ii plans for those farmers who fe- < quest them and help these people 'carry out the practices by doing I the necessary layout work. These I men do a limited amount of 'work for other farmers on request who do not have a conservation -farm plan. These men aJao ) check performance on grass J waterways, dams, ditches and other work farmers have done 3 and on which they expect to learn A.C.P. payments. The conservation district owns a tree planter which is on loan to farmers at $3 per thousand trees planted plus the cost of a man to operate the planter. The technicians are Bob Repke and Dayton Field. The F.H.A. is the Farmer* [Home administration. This organization loans government funds to farmers who do not have sufficient credit to obtain operating capital from regular credit sources. There is a very limited amount of money Available for purchasing a farm. Robert is In charge of this program. All three of these offices arc located upstairs at 110 East Jackson street, Woodstock. • The extension service which is sponsored by the Farm Bureau is the educational branch of the U.S.D.A. TJiis means Gene Brown and me. We are supposed to ..*11 the story about better farming methods by various methods. We supervise dairy herd improvement work and soil testing. The Dairy Herd Improvement association furnishes the testers for a fee and the Farm" Bureau furnishes the soil testing laboratory and technician for a fee. The Farm Bureau has lease forms, farm account books, etc., for sale. Farm Bureau Farm Management service is another fee service, which is supervised by the fieldman hired by the association. Last spring Norm Specht left the soil conservation service as a technician working with the soil conservation district' to become fieldman for Farm Bureau Farm Management service. There Are a number of cooperatives that are farmer-owned by stock, or membership that the farmer may deal with. They are Northeast Illinois Production Credit association, National Farm Loan association, McHenry County Service, I.A.A.. Insurance Service, and Northerp Illinois Breeding Co-op. The first two have offices at 110 Bant Jackson street and the rest are located In the Farm Bureau building. The Farm Bureau, whkh is in its forty-first year here, mothered most of these agencies, organizations and services by getting legislation, both state and national, passed where necessary or sold stock and helped to incorporate the others. The Farm Bureau is county, state and national in scope. . It's hard to do a poor job of feeding hog's with a good legume pasture. And, let it be ladiiib if powrible. Harry Bannister and Leonard Carey are featured. This is the gay comedy by Louis Verneuil, the Parisian who settled in Los Angeles, where, toward the end of 1949, he vviote the play. It subsequently ran for almost two years on Broadway. This company just completed a profitable 5-week stay in San Franciseo. • , • r... The story tells of social intrigue in Washington, a little matter of devilment that doesn't change with a new administration. The six Hollywood stars Tortraying the villians an d vixens of the nation's capital have sbme 502 movies to their credit. TTiey know social sidestepping from " every possible misstep. "Affairs of State" will .play on Sunday evenings and omit the midweek matinee. However, there will be a Saturday afternoon performance. Richard W. Krakeur, who produced the show originally, continues to sponsor this special Chicago company, which has had glorious success on its tour from the West. A glimpse into the hidden l-'fe of the Washington smart set, where axes fall as, heavily" as they do in the Pentagon, makes for one of the most sparkling sprees of the current Chicago season.: LAWN and GARDEN CAME By Allhoff's Hardware Uncle Sam Says ^aaapaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaai aaaaaaaaaaaa i •aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamaa^aa \ Seeding A New Lawn Before sowing your seed, be sure that you've made a favorable seed bed. It should have a fine shallow layer of surface .soil free from depressions but with a firm but not compact soil immediately beneath it. Frequently, especially on light soils, rolling or tamping may be necessary to give the desired firmness. Soil should be moist but not wet, to obtain the best results. Sow your seed oh a quiet day, if possible, and use a mechanical spreatler to distribute the seed evenly. A good mechanical spreader gives you accurate, economical flow control so that you distribute just the proper amount of seed. fit you seed in spring, it should be done as early as possible. On level areas where the finished grading is completed, seed may be planteii after the snow is off the ground arid while alternate thawing and freezing of the ground occurs. Under these conditions seeding should be done in the morning while the soil is frozen. Fall seeding is preferable, however. From the latter part of August the the middle of September is an ideal time, if moisture conditions are right. Except when seed is sown during the freezing and thawing period in the spring or oh dry soil just before a rain, it should be raked or brushed in and then rolled-with a medium weight roller, being careful not to ^cmpact the soil. After seeding keep the surface Drop Cookies Drop teokies should be placed about one and one-half inches apart j layer of soil damp by frequent la neat spoonsful on the cooking' light waterings with a fine spray ftheet to allow for spreading. during the germination period and until the seedlings are rooted firmly. After the grass is established water only when the soil becomes dry or the grass shows some evidence of wilting. At these times soak the soil thoroughly tc a depth of 5 or 6 inches. Quick Stand of Grass You'll get a quick stand of grass along walks and keep newly seeded lawn from splashing onto walks or washing away, it you edge walks with strips of sod. Use sod that is about 1 inch tljick and lay it on soil that hat been prepared for quick rooting. Newly Seeded Slope A newly seeded slope should bf covered with burlap or open-mesh cloth right, after planting to keep the soil from eroding before the grass roots develop. , Stake tlu cloth down and then remove i> when the first grass pushes through the mesh. «, Adv.
