Usually this column tells y«n not to take this type picture because most of them are jhtns •o poorly. Bat this one is published because it is good enough to ba classed as the exception that proves the rule. *- v --•--- It Helps to Know fho Utnguoge HV| F VERY field of aiftivlty has Its own language. Certain words *re its exclusive property except I *rhen borrowed for other uses. | Obviously, If one is going to work In any given field you need to know the terminology, so today's ; column is given over to a very brief glossary of photographic wms useful to the amateur. These lire terms which crop up from lime to time in this column and there isn't always room to explain them at the time. Lens Aperture: The opening though Which light enters the cgintera to make a picture. With many cameras this may be varied la sl2e. Shutter: The device which opens apd closes to permit light to pass through the lens. Shutter Speed: The time during which, the shutter remains open tb admit light to the film in the camera For example, 1/50 of a second. Exposure: The amount of light to which the sensitive film in the camera is exposed. This is determined by the size of the lens aperture and the shutter speed. Focal Length: Roughly, the distance from the lens to the film when the camera is focused on distant object. f Number: A number used to denote the aperture of a Jens, as f/8, f/11, or f/18. Since the number represents the ratio of the diameter of the aperture to the focal length of the lens, the smaller numbers represent the larger apertures. On most cameras these are arranged so that each f number (or aperture) admits twice as much light to the film as the next higher f number. Depth of Field: Also called range of sharpness, depth of field refers to the distance--in a picture scene--from the nearest point in sharp focus to the farthest point in sharp focus. The ^mailer the lens aperture the greater the depth of field. Film Spee<J; This refers to the relative amount of light required, to produce a satisfactory negative on different types of film. For example, using two different films toi picture the same scene, the exposure with one may be twice the exposure required with the other because the film speeds are different --John van Guilder .ADVERTISE IN THE PLAINDEALEft THOSE WERE THf if [THOSE] WERE THE DAYS GOING WEST 8 , vT"^' v • '1 :.
