Don Blake came back after a spell of illness to lend a big hand and tied with Loren Freund in point making. There were times in the game, when Curtright demonstrated his unstopable drives under the basket, that it looked like the Streaks were living up to their name. However, they could not hold the pace as McHenry's rebounding controlled the ball much of the time. Frank Oeffling came into the game in the final period and did real well in grabbing the ball and sinking two shots. If every one would have been able to play as they did two nights before the Townsend game, it could have well been another victory for McHenry. However, with Ray Schmitt and Lloyd Freund out of the lineup, the Townsend boys walked off with a 68 to 60 win over the local boys. Townsend took a 2 point lead at the end of the first quarter by a score of 16 to 14. They made it 37 to 33 at half time and then went on to make it 55 to 45 at the end of three periods. McHenry came back to outscore Townsends in the fourth quarter by 2 points, but that was not enough to cover up the 10 point margin left at the start of the quarter, the final score being 68 to 60. , Dick Gibbs again was high map with 26 points. Dick has a total of 114 points in five games for an average of 22.8 per game, well above his average for last year. Bob Miller drew second honors -with 12 points, Glenn Peterson had 8 while Sheahan and Draffhorn each had 6, Stolzke had 2 and Jerry Gibbs went scoreless hut played a very excellent defensive game. Both Stolzke and Draffhorn played thir first game of the season and did a fine job considering that they haven't been practising this year. The McHenry wrestlers, without the services of 175-pounder Red Stilling, were still able to smother Leyden 32 to 18. Stilling, home sick with the flu, expects to be back in the lineup this week. Dick Wirtz, a promising freshman, opened the match by pinning Montgomery of Leyden in the third round. Jessup lost in a good match to Kirchoff and Claude McDermott outpointed Portincaso in a close one 6 to 4. Terry Reid made one mistake in his match at 12Q pounds with Tessler and the Leyden wrestler pinned hia with a guillotine. At 127 pounds, Gen el Hughes proved once again that [he is a serious contender for the state championship. Richardson was his victim this week as he won lis seventh in a row with a.pin. Art Thornton had to forfeit to Duntenann because of an injury and Bob Bitterman outpointed Ormerod 4-0. At 145 pounds, Jack Pearson brought five points to McHenry by pinning Gunther after leading 7 to 4 in the third round. A1 Trendler, jrfter a close match, outpointed Nelson of Leyden 4 to 2, receiving 2 points on riding time. At 165, Wally Schimke, another freshman, won his second match in a, row 6 to 5 over Johnson. Bill Brooks, wrestling in Stilling's place at 175, was pinned by Vanish and John Sternickle ended the proceedings by pinning Bellisle with a side roll and reverse Nelson. The Fulton five will face Harvard in the second game Monday night. If they get by Harvard, the Warriors will then face the winner of the Woodstock-Marengo game in the second game Tuesday night. That brings lis up to the finals. Very simple -- on paper. As most fans know, McHenry has won the county tournament only once. That was back in the year 1925. No predictions are made this year, but Coach Fulton has a group that gives it all they have in every game. Due to the large seating capacity in the new building at Crystal Lake, it will not be necessary to clear the gym after each game as has been the practise in recent years.
