T?"' * THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER jfhj €oa&, UJedBAJh. £ ' AO- 9tuu»*r\ Sports news is running heavy. Let's see what's cooked or is cookin'. WARRIORS-- We happened to be in Waiikegan last Friday and happened to be near Lake Forest ami happened to think that, our boys were playing basketball in that town that very night. Funny how we arrange those happenings! • .' How we lost that game will have to be left to the experts. Seems ' we should have taken 'em. On Tuesday night Harvard came to town with $peed and a plan, but not enough size. It took three quarters to convince that team. Then came the final blow, 27 points and victory in the last quarter. Zion-Benton comeS "W'town -Friday night for the find game of the season, it nyikes jio difference to us who scores the most,, points. We try <£f>j£ive< credit to the feeders as well as* the big-point boys. We can win this one. L>et's pack that gym to see how it's done. BOXING-- ' You will see something different in the way of sports entertainment Saturday night in the MCHS gymnasium when the C.Y.O. boxers square off in six bouts. There will also be two fast wrestling matches to round out a high grade program. FORESTERS-- The seats will hardly be cool in the local gym when the crowd swarms in for the Forester State Basketball Tournament, starting at 1 p.m. Sunday. We gave you the opening day schedule last week and will find 3eparate report on activities this week. In fact, you will find reports each week from here on in-- Chuck Weingart tells us that milk is going to be the main dish this year in the way of refreshments. You know, there is quite a campaign on these days to get more people .to drink more milk. Just look at Chuck! TTiere are the results of milk drinking. We used to dip the cone-shaped dipper into the milk can ourselves for an evening night cap in our early days on the farm. Yep. Good, cold milk is on the menu. Give the kids a little extra change. ELGIN REGIONAL CAGE TOURNEY OPENS MARCH 1 McHenry Warriors Vs. Strong Antioch Five On Wednesday The Elgin Regional basketball tournament optens next Tuesday night, March l, in the Elgin high school gym. Coach Fulton's Warriors face the strong Antioch five in the first ,game Wednesday night at 6:45. Antioch made a great showing, last year in the same tournament and will be back with addeid strength from all reports. As in recent years, each game will be considered as a separate session. The gym will be cleared after each game in order to make room for the reserved seats for the next game. March 1 Game 1, Elgin vs Grant, 6:45 Game 2, Crystal Lake vs Woodstock, 8:30 March 2 Game 3, Antioch vs McHenry, 6:45 Game 4, Dundee vs District Winner, 8:30 March 3 Game 5, Winner l vs Winner 2, 6:45 Game 6, Winner 3 vs Winner 4, 8:30 March 4 Game 7, Winner 5 vs Winner 6, 8:00 TWO RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES IN AUTO CRASH Two motorists suffered minor' injuries in an accident which occurred at the intersection of Rtes. 31 and 176, northeast of Crystal Lake, one day last week. The cars were driven by Frank C. Sandblom of Palmyra, Wis., who was travelling south on Rt. 31, and John H. Greenlee of Cherry Valley, who was driving west on Rt. 176. The latter suffered a hip injury and Marion Sandblom, a passenger in the other car, received an arm injury. ^According t«| '\j^.x$pprt given state police, Greenlee said he stopped at the sign and then proceeded to cross the otiher highway. FORESTERS HAVE TOP-NOTCH ACTS FOR FIRST NIGHT Slate Basketball Tourney Opens In MCHS Gym Sunday Entertainment for the first Sunday of the Forester Basketball tournament at the McHenry high school gym will be provided by real top-notch performers, people who have reached the heights of success in their field in the youth movements of the Illinois State Court. For five years the State Court has sponsored "Talent contests" and has uncovered future greats of the entertainment world. To be presented on the evening of February 27 will be the winners of both the 1854 and 1955 talent contests. You've seen professionals and enjoyed them, but you "ain't" seen anything until you have witnessed simon pure amateurs who deliver sterling performance along with the simple innocence of youth. The 1954 flashes will be Edmund and Kathleen Goethals of 1306 17th street, East Moline, who specialize in acrobatic dancing. Edmund is 13 years old while his sister, Kathleen, is a grand 8 years. They attend St. Mary's grammar school in East Moline. Both are members of St. Mary's Court, No. 1790, of East Moline. Many Talents The 1955 talent winners are another brother and sister team consisting of Richard and Joan Conrath of 4815 N. Washtenaw Avenue, Chicago. Richard, 15 years and a 2nd year student at St. George High School in Evanston, specializes on the accordion. His sister, Joan, is 8 years and a third grade pupil at St. Matthias School in Chicago. She posesses many talents in that she sings and acts, tap dances and does her stint as a baton twirler. Richard will play "Sharpshooters March"; Joan will sing "Make Love To Me" and will follow with a tap dance to the tune of "Mister Tap Toe"; in a duet Richard will play "Illinois March" while Joan does her baton mastery. Richard and Joan are Rangers in St. Eugene Court No. 287, Chicago. A third entry is promised but for the present is a mystery. Rumor has it that three performers will compose the act which will be varied. For some reason • no exact - description can. nqw be given, but all will have to await the evening of February 27 when all can hear and see, at the High School Gym. BOWLINGIS. Koch chimed in with a 234 321 as ihis mates, Vern Freund, Cynowa, Corso and Krause all I went strong for a 2748 series. Mrs. Lloyd (Doris) Freuhd hadv a neat series for the Central Garage team that gets more thaii passing note: 234-135-194- 561. ' Those polio Fund bowlers are still at it. Gene Schaefer had one game for the book. In each ;'raine he knocked down 9 pins With his first ball. And each tim$ he picked up his spare for a 190 game. George Barbian led the men again with 193-549. Russ Weyland, 201-534; Eddie Buss, 201- 535; Gene Schaefer, 190.526; Harold Steffan, 201-520; Jim Stella, 196-519; Jim Kupec, 186- 518; Paul Karls, 503s ^ , The ladies also ha&^oijSS good scores. Maureen DoStrty^'- 508; Gertie Barbian, 46o; Bonnie Meyers, 446. They roll 'em to keep^the Polio Fund rolling. \V, Think we gave yow -vail the winners in the Forester Bowling Jamboree last week except one. They had a tremendous crowd at their party Sunday night. After chicken dinner came the prize awards. Angie Freund sat right up front with a group of ladies and, whenever Ernie's name was called for a cash prize, who do you think stepped up to accept the green backs? OPEN BOWLING LAKES BOWL Round Lake, 111. -- Route 134 12 ALLEYS EVERY SATURDAY & SUNDAY Entertainment Every Saturday Nite NOW APPEARING: DON STADFELD and HIS BAND Featuring "Frank Hum-Hum Quist" on the Drums C.Y.O. Tony has taken a keen interest in training and helping boys in the youth program. Seated is Mike Triolo, Director of C.Y.O. activities, who rates a vote of thanks for his cooperation in bringing this fine athletic show to McHenry. The Wonder Lake parish is sponsoring this show as an activity to bring needed funds into a school building fund. LAKE FOREST FIVE SPOILS WIN STREAK OF WARRIORS 50-44 Riding high on a four game winning streak (three in conference play), the McHenry Wai riors ran into a snag at Lake Forest Friday night alitd were set back 50 to 44. In spite of leading 26 to 20 at half time the Warriors were not as sharp as in previous games. Lake Forest had obviously planned a defense to bottle tip Dick joosten. Three early fouls on Nowak caused Coach Fulton to yank him in the first half. He was back at the start of the lajst half, but the whistle caught up to him. While Ron May clipped off 24 points for, McHenry, LakeForest had' no outstanding scoj-er. They had their chance from the free throw line on McHenry's 20 fouls and took advantage with 22 points. That was the ball game. McHenry (44) B P P Oeffling 5 0 4 Joosten 0 2 4 Nowak 1 0 5 May '8 8 0 Huff 3 0 3 Dahl 0 0 4 Totals 17 10 20 Lake Forest (50) B F P W. DAILY PINUPS: The grass that seems greener may have had much more mowing; the corn that grows higher may have had lots more hoeing. The notion so dear today could become expensive tomorrow.
