Restful Sleep Necessary To Health Nothing can replace natiiral sleep in the restoration of the body's energy, according to the educational committee of the Illinois State Medical society in a health talk. The periadj of sleep and the sleeping positions vary with each individual. In sleep, all actions of the body are slowed down. Breathing is less deep, the pulse is less frequent and 'tf-e conscious mind is quiet, and all muscular systems tend to relax. This process acts much like' the recharging of a battery and serves to restore energy. In activity, greater ,staain is placed on the body as a wliole* Muscies use for i'uel a kijid of animal starch calle.1 glycogen, which is obtained from food. As it is used, waste products are formed which in themselves are chemical compounds, principally carbon dioxide and lactic acid. These waste products are carried away slowly in the blood and ultimately through the breatft arej the excretions. Muscles that are working constantly often produce waste produots more rapidly than they can! be removed. In sleep, the slowing dow8 of the body processes affords opportunity to catch up on the ellmin-1 ation of waste products. The natural physiologic process assists in building up the tissue of the body which has been expended tl . rough normal body activity. In addition to having an hour's nap in the afternoon, a child of from 4 to 6 years of age should sleep from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. A child from 12 to 14 may sleep from 8:30 p.m. until 7 a.m. The growing boy or girl between the the ages of 14 and 18 should sleep at least nine or 'ten hours. The adult should fit his sleeping schedule to his physical and emotional needs. £>ome persons get along nicely on four or five hours of rest a nigt.t, while others demand a full eight hours of rest to prepare them for the working idiay. Individual requirements are best determined by efficiency of the body and mind. Some executives, for example, find that a few minutes of nap eaih day. even reposing in a chair, enable them to meet the demands of a heavy schedule. The exception of these average rules for sleep are, of course, the very young and those persons worn out by illness or wea>kness. Good (health habits are conductive to proper sleep. It is wise to suspend all mental anid physical activity at least one half hour before bed time, permitting the processes of the body gradually to slow down. Taking one's worries to bed will not assist in their solution. Tests have proved that insufficiency of sleep impairs the- efficiency of the body, physically and mentally. Irritability and "toudhiness" result, memory is impaired and vision is affected. These conditions can lay the foundation for insomnia.
