McHENRY :•§». -X~t > B-V v •. - PMA RECOMMENDS A HIGHER PRICE FOR FLUID MILK . „ . i Pure' ilHK Association recommended , that farmers be paid a higher price for fluid milk' during public hearing which started in Chicago on Tuesday, July 5. The .hearing was called by the U.S. Dejiartjmenti of Agriculture to receive testimony on the handling of milk in the Chicago area. Milk handling is regulated by Chicago's Federal Milk Marketing Order 41, through the Federal Milk Market Administrator's office. The hearing is expected to continue for several days. The Pure Milk association, which represents the majority of dairy farmers who sell milk Chicago, asks that those farmers be paid a higher rate for milk which is used for bottling purposes. PMA recommends that the premium on bottled milk be increased from 70 cents a hundred -pounds to 90 cents during the months of March, April, May and June. PMA recommends other changes in the Federal Milk Order. Kankakee county. 111., and all of Will county. 111., are asked to be included under the Chicago milk market area. PMA. asks to extend the deadline for producers requesting a new producer status until Jan. 15. The deadline is now Dec. 31. Most projects of this kind heretofore have been able to reach a flow of only 0.5 million galena per acre per day. This method can be used to help relieve. future water shortages expectcftl to occur because of the ever increasing demand for water. TChe survey points out that such projects for artificially replaced ground water sources can be used in many parts of the state where ground water is used from drift wells and where a large stream or surface water supply exists. -- -- -- Five advantages are found in ground water rather than surface water storage, according to the survey: (1) free from taste-producing growths, (2) little or no evaporation, (3) cooler temperature in sumittSbr, (4) may be tapped at any (5) requires no large purchase of land. Illinois river 'ifcrater is used by the survey at '^edUrta. *4»eing purified, the water is returned to the ground by means of a "recharge pit." In other words, the survey project speeds up a process which occurs naturally over a number of years. Well $vater is rain or snow which fell many years ago. Because more people are using water faster than it can be replaced naturally, recharge projects will be needed more and more in the future. Areas that could benefit from recharge operations are the Illinois river valley below LaSalle, the bottomlands along the Mississippi, Ohio and Wabash rivers and certain parts of the Sangamon, Kaskaskia, Embarrass, Little Wabash and Saline river valley as well as some intersections of present streams with old buried valleys. Local studies rftight reveal additional possible locations. Heavily pumped areas which probably will require such recharge operations first are the American bottoms around East St. Louis, the Peoria area, the Wabash valley near Lawrenceville and the Chicago area. NEW METHOD TO RELIEVE WATER SHORTAGES--A method to return water to the ground at a rate of 21 million gallons per acre per day has been developed by the State Water Survey division of the Illinois Department of Registration and Education. Previous projects of this kind have been able to reach a frow of only one-half million gallons per acre per day. The new method, developed in an experimental project at Peoria, can be used to relieve water shortages caused by ever-increasing demand. Shown above are areas in Illinois where ground water sources could be replenished by use of recharge operations. The smaller "hatched" area around Chicago Would be more favorable but the larger area would also benefit. --State of Illinois DDR COMPANY SALES Consolidated sales of National Tea company for the four-week period ended June 18 increased 7.88 per cent over the same period a year ago, H.
