'i'iy i '1 •V January 5,1958 m£2Zm THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER I I fc»- By Mule Schaettgta The auxiliary. Christmas party Was enjoyed by eighty or more .members and guests and about f&ty junior members. All of us enjoyed the beautiful C&tistmas tree 50 generously donated by Mrs. Beulah Vachet. The juniors sang Christmas songs to the accompaniment of MTs. Nimtz and everyone joined in with "White Christmas." Our juniors chairman, Mrs. Clifford CMson worked hard to make the P&rty a memorable one for the younger members of our auxiliary. After the songfest and short business meeting, a lunch was served by a committee who also /worked hard to make the party a success. Mrs. Mikota, president, Wisely cut the business portion ofr the meeting to a minimum. It Was decided that the membership dinner would be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 4, with an invitation extended to the husbands to join the ladies later. Mrs. Bassi, child welfare chairman, made an appeal for warm outer clothing for children ages 8 to 12. There is a great need, especially for overshoes^ A long list of needy children Was brought to our attention by Mrs. Rulien, school nurse. Other civic organizations are cooperating to alleviate this need, and if you have unneeded clothing "please do donate it. , Our Department of Illinois radio chairman, Miss Riden, announces that there will be a radio script contest open to unit members. The script must be of 12-minute duration on Welfare." The entries should reach Mrs. Rose Erickson, 9240 West Pensacola avenue, Chicago 14, by April 1, 1956. There will be a fifteen dollar award to the Winner, whose name will be announced at the department convention. Snow people, ever popular with crovrn-t always good wintertijt»e~cSj Snow Pictures and children alike, are •abject*. R is a time full of outdoor picture-taking opportunities. From the day the first snbw falls until the last patches are melting in the woods, it presents wonderful camera material. A bright, sunny, clear day is the best you can find for snow pictures. And on such a day, With either black-and-white or color film, stand so that the scene and the Bnow are lighted from the side. This will enable you to record the texture of the snow quite faithfully. Bright sunlight will make "Child; the snow sparkle, but very effective mood pictures can be made on dull days. Should your subject be children at play--and what could make a more appealing snow shot--stand with the sun at your back so the children are front lighted. The snow may not sparkle so much in thia type of picture, but the sparkle in the children's • faces will eihow up more. In determining exposure, check the instructions packed with your film for the proper setting for a bright subject and go on from there. You follow the same procedure if you are using one <rf the inexpensive pocket-size guides. If you are using an exposure meter, the reading should always be taken close to the person whose picture you are taking, or the principal object in the scene. When you take skiing or tobogganing pictures, in which you want to show the steepness of the slope, best position from which yotJ can show the steepness is not the top, nor the bottom, but from a vantage point on a near-by slope from which you get a side view. You don't have to go to a winter resort to get such pictures. While the proportions won't be quite the sanie, you can still get pictures that are fun to have if you shoot the sledders on your favorite hometown hill. 0 --John van Guilder January 5 Circle 1, W.S.C.S. -- Community Methodist Church -- 1 p.m. Circle 5, W.S.C.S. -- Mrs. Lester Bacon Home -- 8 p.m. Circle 6, W.S.C.S. -- Mrs. Lie- Roy Olsen Home -- 8 pjn.
