The third annual parish basketball tournament will start next Sunday, Jan. 15, in the McHenry Community high school. This tournament is sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus, McHenry Council No. 1288. This annual event was previously held during the Christmas holiday season, but has been changed to avoid the busy season and still avoid any conflict with other events. The question of continuing the tournament was quickly settled by players from various parishes. Some feel that they can place stronger teams on the floor this year and are anxious to give it a hard try for the championship cup. St, Thomas of Crystal Lake meets the Christ the King team of Wonder Lake in the opening game Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. There will be two games in the evening, St. Peter's of Spring Grove facing McHenry's St. Patrick five at 7 o'clock. At 9 o'clock, the defending champs from St. John's, Johnsburg, will face their old rivals from St. Mary's of McHenry. The locals had games' pt 952-920-1058. Woodstock beat them with 966 pins in the second game. John (Bud-Honky) Miller was the bowler of the match with a 251 game and 657 series (his 2- year-old son, Jerry, has a bowling ball already). Andy McCarroll had a 615 series and Gene Schaefer, Jim Larkin and Hans Behnke weren't fooling around. Hie Warrior Frosh-Soph five started out bravely at Lake Forest Friday night, leading 10 to 8 at the end of .the first quarter. Ice fishing is at low ebb as of late. The fish seem to bite in streaks of one day to one week straight, then they stop. At Lake Geneva the perch seem to be running a bit smaller. Fishing the shallow water of Lake Geneva isn't too hard. All you have to do is look in the hole and see if the fish are down there. When a school is moving through, the action is fast and furious, but then it stops just likesomeone had thrown an electric switch. Some big northerns are being pulled out of Lake Geneva and we heard that a fellow caught a 17% pounder at Lake Delavan on,, a 4 pound test leader. He really must have known how to handle a big one. The bluegills don't seem to be hitting good anywhere this week. Maybe some lucky fellow will hit a big school now and then, but they aren't biting consistently. Crappie fishing at Twin Lakes is reported to have been good about two weeks ago. Some northerns and walleyes have been caught there too this year. All we can do is keep trying. Four trophies will be awarded, giving the better teams a chance to tote home some recognition for their efforts. Another change will find the two defeated teams of the semifinals playing the preliminary game before the championship. They are now going over the factors of marksmanship in the prone position. They will use the "shooter-coach" method of rifle training, where one boy shoots and the . ther boy coaches, then they change places and the first boy coaches while the other shoots. This method gives the shooter a coach to aid him and help him correct ,v small errors that suffect his scores, and the coach also learns how these same errors are to be avoided to improve his own scores, that every good coach is also a good shot. There were several marksmanship awards won. Denny Marshall and "Buzz" Jensen won sharpshooter. "Butch" Miller won both pro-marksman and marksman. Terry Harth won marksian first class. A future plan was mentioned in the meeting for the rifle club to rent a patch of grounds and woodlands for actual meetings under the exact conditions that would exist in their future hunting trips. This will also give the boys a chance to hunt and shoot on their own rented ground and learn the many safety and conservation laws that will confront them in the shooting world. All the bOys are anxious to try for game and the fun that goes with it. We will "shop" around for a suitable piece of ground early in the spring. Sports Highlights Of 1954 YEAR 1955 The time has come to. look back over the past year and recall a few highlights in local sports events. We will miss some along the way, but time waits for no man and '56 is picking' up steam. _ 'Twas in that cold month ot January that Johnsburg drew first headlines for winning the Parish Basketball Tourney. High school basketball got a lift with a 61-46 win over Lake Forest. Mary Hettermajui bowled a 240 game and Art Jackson a 683 series. Elmer Frefund was elected president of the McHenry Country Club. On Netar Year's Day Bilfl Bacon, Frank Rourke, Julius Goffo and Johnnie Rourke golfed in the snow stad .&rs. Goffo took thedr picture. Clarence Smith reported the first robin of the year. Woodstock beat , the Warriors in the county tournament. Crystal Lake won the county basketball tournament, then came to McHenry and were upset 56-54 by our Warriors. Vern Freund had a lot of good bowling chalked up. We note a 649 series. Len Thennes won the all-events in the Forester Bowling Jamboree. Harold W. Freund's 241 was high game. Paul Boyko's 649 series was tops. Andy Steinsdoerfer won the singles while Len and Bud Thennes took the doubles. Ernie Freund's team was first and the Ed Buss team second. The Warriors had a 4-game win streak going. Doris Freund bowled 561. St. Patrick's won the sectional. Coach "Buck" Wheeland's wrestlers were gaining recognition. Dick Bates, Jeff Moss and Terry Reid placed in the sectional at Elgin. Bates moved to the state finals. ,, C.Y.O. boxers gave the fans a good show. Coach Jim Doran's basketball team from St. Mary's won the Amercian Legion tournament. Barrington was first in the North Suburban with a 13-1 record. McHenry finished 5-9 in the league, but added several nonconference Victories. Carl Behnke bowled a 250 game. And did he smile! Ed Kowalics and Paul Krumske showed 'em how at the Bowling Bar. John Dreymiller quit bartering and devoted all his time to planning a successful season for the Speedettes. Irene Adams reported the Northern Illini Bowmen events all year and did a real good job. McHenry High finished third' with a 5-5 record. Don Peasley advanced the idea of a "George Sullivan Field" at Woodstock. It happened -- and we were glad. Win Hagfberg was lost for several hours in Braves Field at Milwaukee. Emil Simon won the "Hookey Day" trophy. Joe Frett's county league entry placed third in the state baseball meet. Howie Freund was the batting champ. Dick Herdrich scored and reported Little League games. (We want him back next summer.) Jack Walsh wrote a weekly column headed "The Great Outdoors." Buss Motors won the softball championship 11-3. Bimibo's finished 10-4. Marie Johnson Laun remembered the sports department with contributions. "Anonymous" was and still is anonymous. Jake Stoffel told of his great accomplishments as a baseball player in days gone by. "Die Johnsburg Tigers were county champs. Willie Klapperich staged a great comeback on the mound.
