In July, 1897, Mr. Besley came, to McHenry,. where he established a drug store, which he conducted in this village for a period of thirty-three years. It will be remembered that his store was destroyed by the ~big West Side Jire of the spring of 1907. He lost everything he possessed at that time. As soon as he was able to do so, he rented the store i*oom now occupied by E. V. McAllister ifi the Jos. W. Freund block, where he continued to do business until four years ago last spring, when he disposed of his Stock to the present owner. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Woodtock, where he had resided since. Buys Wheeler Farm-- Michael A.5* Conway, who recently disposed of his farm south; of town to George Frisby, has just purchased the Mrs. E. J. i Wheeler place, east of the river, < one of the most desirable pieces of land in this locality. The property consists of about fortyseven acres of excellent land and a beautiful country home, built , only a few years ago. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO From Issue of January 22, 1981 MW-Winter Wedding-- A pretty mid-winter wedding took place at Johnsburg Jan. 21, when Miss Martha Tonyan, daughter of Wm. B. Tonyan, and Mr. George Schmitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Schmitt of Johnsburg were united in marriage by the Rev. Fr. 'Vollman. Country Club Annual Meeting-- The ninth'" annual meeting of the McHenry Country club was held Jan. 18 at the city hall. The former officers were all re-elected as follows: President, Richard B. Walqh; vice-president. F. G. Schreiner-; secretary, E. E. BassetTT treasurer. Gerald J. Carey. JThe directors of the club are IF. A. Bohlander, Ben Stilling, R. I. Overton, James Savler. John R. Former McHenry Physician^-I^les A message was received ! by relatives here this week, telling of the death of Dr. Charles Fegers of Keokuk, Iowa, following an illness of several months. Murphy, Sr.-- McHenry is this week mourning the passing of Mrs. L. B. Murphy, Sr., who died on Jan. 22 in Presbyterian' hospital* Chicago. Appointed Police Chief-- f Earl Dowell, recently returned from overseas military service, was appointed by Mayor Overton, and the appointment approved by the City Council at the meeting Monday evening of this week. Schmitt. who since the death of the late John Bishop has conducted a harber shop at the latter's old stand in the Jack Justen o, block in Centerville, has , purchased the Bonslett store! building on the West Side. i Peterson-Pha*>l*i n-- i A wedding of interest to Mc-, Henry friends took place Saturday when Miss Evangeline Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Peterson of St. Peter ,Minn., and Mr. Howard V. Phalin, son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Phalin of this city, were married in the SPEED AND ACCIDENTS The number of drivers who were exceeding safe speed limits at the moment they became involved in motor vehicle crashes on Illinois highways Increased 120 per cent -- from 591 to 1,309 -- during the first nine months of 1955, as compared with the preceding year. Eighty-eight of the crashes were fatal. This showing is outlined in an analysis of 19,172 motor vehicle accidents released by the state Division of Highways. Of the ' $4,997 drivers involved in these accidents, ten per cent were teen-agers. Efightyseven accidents of tjiese teenagers caused de&tfr,../?4iere were 528 drivers who had been drinking prior to crashes -- 39 of these crashes were fatal. For the three-quarter period of 1955, all accidents totalled 97,615, up ten per cent from the preceding year. There was a corresponding ten per cent increase in vehicular miles travelled. Support the March of Dimes. Items of Local Interest-- Butter sold at 31 cents per pound on the Elgin board of trade last Saturday. Dr. C. H. Fegers is moving into his beautiful new bungalow crh the corner of Elm and Court streets. The thaw of last week put another crimp into the ice-making business here. The pond, as well as the river, were flooded and for a time it looked as if the old Fox could cause some trouble here, but fortunately the crisis passed without serious results. Ostend Items-- Mrs. C. E. Jecks is suffering with rheumatism in her foot, not serious, but lame. Mr. Cooley doesn't care for mud or water when he wants to take a trip. His tin Lizzie always goes. The voters of this community will be given a chance to vote on the saloon question again this coming spring.
