Forester basketball" tournament. But, there were >x>me of as who WouiLd have enjoyed telling: more yarns than could be told ait this somewhat serious occasion. All the people from other towns Called him "FViltz": and one lady went so far as to state ths.t our dear pal' sometimes told stories that might be stretching the truth. That rm&t have been before he came to McHenry. FORESTER CA6E TOURNEY FINALS NEXT SUNDAY John Dreymiller Honored In "This Is Your Life" G. Diedrich P. McGuire J. The grade school tournament last week showed us that real progress is being made in developing our young fellows. The program started four years ago by Father McGowan and Cliff Fulton (sponsored by the American Legion) JS bound to bring resulfe in our high school soon. Not that we feel the program should be merely for developing future Stars. No. The sooner we can enlarge the program as a sound recreational program for all, the better for al!l concerned. In talking to coaches, players and fans from other towns the past season we gather thait most towns had a start on us of at least two years. This, no doubt, is reflected in our high school teams. We are certain that our high school athletic men -- Fultcm, Cuda, Pheanis and all the staff are giving extra time to the grade school group. Early training certainly showed up to heBjp Coach Cuda do a good job wSth the Frosh-Sophs this year. But, we st® were not up __ to schools like Crystal Lake and Barrtagton. kt ma^ltaTtS a coup!# of more years. Maybe not. Just think what one more good, big: man would have done for our varsity cagers this year. They are all sold out for the Giobetrotters-House of David game next Monday, but you may ftod standing room at 8 o'clock. To the head of the bowling class this week goes Carl Behnke with 109-2418-244-661. Should have counted that firgt game as practice. The PtalLace Ladies have a nominee in LQ Michells with a fancy series - 187-206-178-571. Highlighting the second Sunday of play in the C.O.F. state basketball tournament was an evening program in which Hampshire's loss and McHenry's gain, John Dreymiller, was the surprised principal character in a "This Is Your. Life" review. Fred Meyer, " the stem-winder of the program, brought Dreymiller to the stage in company with Past Commanders of the McHenry American Legion Post. As these men faded from the scene, relatives and friends from many of John's stamping' grounds were brought in to unfold tales of his life. The Legion's young drum and bugle corps and members of the rifle squad were present to lend patriotic color to the program. At the conclusion of the program, Mayor Freund presented a resolution from McHenry's City Council recognising the many deeds done by the honored guest during his years in 'this community. Tourney Gaines In the opening game of the afternoon, St. Gregory easily defeated St. Mary No. 2 Rangers 62 to 31 as Scnell rolled up 34 points. None of St. Gregory's 62 points were made on free throws. In one of the best games so far, St. John Seniors beat St. Gregory 62-58. Bernie Schmitt's 23 points, followed by John Huffs 22, topped the scoring. St. Mary Juniors rolled up a 17 to 0 first quarter lead, then gave reserves a chance -to play in a 37-15 win over the Canadians. Mike Low scored five baskets in the first quarter as he faded away from his guard to take long passes from his mates. A big protest resulted as St. Gregory's Juniors beat Sacred Heart 30 to 28. One of the oddest of happenings occurred when a last second shot hit the ceiling, fell to the floor, then bqunced up to go through the basket. The rules are clear on the point and will be printed when the officials have cleared the smoke. Anyhow, the basket was not allowed St. Mary Rangers No. 1 team was far too strong for the St. John five, 48-13. In the final game, Johnsburg's Seniors defeated St. Pat 51 to 44 in a better than average game. Huff had 21 points and Jim Huexnann 18 for the winners, while Bill Huemann handed in a lot of rebounds. John Bolger scored 15 points in spite of .sitting out the third quarter. Rangers St. Gregory St. John's Johnsburg (51) B. Huemann J. Huff B. Weber B. Schmitt J. Huemann T. Neither team was up to par in scoring, mainly because the defense was crowding all the way. The big change in the third period when, Coach Doran switched his lineup to put Paul Steffan back in the scoring lane instead of working outside the circle. Paul dropped in four field goal and a free throw to start his team gff to victory. Coach Schoenholtz saw his team's chances slide fast in the- fourth quarter when Olson was., lost on fouls. Olson was a big man under the boards and is looked upon as a fine prosipert. For instance, Wyoming's Jackson Hall Ellk herd is being threatened by proposed dams on the Snake Raver andgsome of its tributaries. minting and fishing are in danger in Aroostock County, Maine. Dams have been proposed for hydroelectric power on the St. John River and the Fish River. Maine sportsmen are quite alarmed. These are just a few of the in- *N teresting facts in the pamphlet. It would be impossible to print everything in the pamphlet, but Mr. Rieftesel says that he will save more for us. We heard a big flock of geese go over one night last week. They seemed to be heading North. Gene Stilling of Riverside Drive reports seeing a big flock of geese and flock of ducks Monday night. He said altogether there were a%ou)t*t500 birds. Following the championship, game, Cliff Fulton, who guided the league through the season, expressed Ms pleasure at the interest shown In the program. He then introduced Virgil Pollock, Commander of McHenry Post 4911 PROTECT OUR N ATION'S Y OUTH LEAGUE 3y Bill Bolger Following the tremendous success of Little League baseball in McHenry, we feel a similar program must be provided until these youngsters become eligible for competition in the Junior' Legion program,' or in similar sandlot ball. > Pony League, which derives its name from the first letters of its slogan, "Project Our Nation's Youth," is the answer to the problem of organized recreation for boys 13 and 14. According to league rules, any boy who is 12 now, but has a birthday before August 1, has a playing age of 13. Similarly, any boy who is 14 now, but becomes 15 before August 1, has a playing age of 15, Thfs slatter group is eligible for Junior Legion ball, but not for Pony league ball. Pony League is a transition. It is a bridge to span the years between Little League and regulation baseball. Consequently, this phase of baseball is played on a field midway in dimensions between a Little League field and a regulation diamond. The pitching distance is 52 feet and the base paths are 75 feet. Fred Meyer, who did such a fine job ih getting Little League Started in McHenry, has several ideals rn xnina for Pony League baseball. He will call a meeting in mid-Match, at which time we will discuss p:ans for the coming season. - ' Such a program cannot* be inaugurated or administered just by good intentions and kindly words of approval. It requires hard work by men and women and the monetary support of civic, service, fraternal, business, industrial and church organizations. The man^ours and money invested pay high dividends. I want to remind all the boys in this community, who are within the age limits, to send a post card to me with " your name, address and telephone number on lt-I shall continue to write a column on Pony League as often as there is something new to report and until the new officers take over the organization and have their own secretary for this column.
