Rockets Open Season With Win Last Friday, the Richmond Rockets journeyed to Woodstock and trimmed the fighting Irish from St. Mary's, 5-1. Bud Jarrett, doing a terrific job on the mound for the Rockets, held the Irish to just a pair of singles while striking out eight. The Rockets received five bases on balls and did some real work on stealing bases, coupled with a pair of hits to' provide their five runs It was a well earned victory for Jarrett, who was real tough with men on base. Terry Britz was the losing pitcher for St- Marys. Box Score: Rockets 5 AB R H D. Schmitt 4 0 1 Shaw 3 0 0 R. Miller 3 0 0 Stilling 2 10 Jarrett 3 0 1 Christensen 3 0 0 L. Thursday night in the semi-finals the Zephyrs lost to Hampshire 80-78. The Zephyrs had defeated Hampshire four times this season, but the long lay-off really showed up against the more balanced attack of Hampshire and it spelled, defeat. Friday night, for the third place trophy, the Zephyrs really had to come from behind to beat a sharp shooting team from Rockford 77- 75. The Rockford team had a real good team. Several of the boys were from Rockford West high, and remember Rockford West won the Illinois State high school tourney the last two seasons. Haiti is the country being studied this year in the American Legion auxiliary's program, announced the chairman. We are finding the §tudy very interesting and it is adding much to our knowledge Of this small neighbor of the United States. Each year we study a different republic of the western hemisphere in an endeavor to gain increased understanding of its people. Chi|d Welfare Another of the auxiliary's imj portant activities for April is an even deeper concentration thin , usual on the problems of child i welfare. Problems are brought to ; the auxiliary for discussion and ' solution if possible. Solution may be the exclusive privilege of the , auxiliary, or it may be shared with other civic and patriotic organizations. There is a great need for a : new approach to the problems of juvenile delinquency, youth crime ; and other phases of child welfare, j Changed conditions make this imperative.
