Ptg* Four THE McHENRY PLAXNDEALEH Thursday, May 10. 1956 I' AJg- QteaK i A wet track kept the Shamrocks and Tigers from prancing around - the ball diamond at Johnsburg last Sunday. i Next Sunday the schedule gets Under way. McHenry travels to Elgin to play the V.F.W. team. Johnsburg travels to Algonquin. Crystal Lake travels to Hebron and Elgin Motors to Richmond. So the "Play Bali" call is near at hand for the county league teams and the suppfort of good, loyal fans is all that is needed. Wef like those big league games, but still get a great kick out Qf patching fellows we know get up their to swing that bat! t iiill Bolger bqws out of the Ffony League column this week, after giving us some fine reports, and swings into his duties with Little League. If you haven't done so, take a look at Bill's column and get all the details on meetings this (Thursday) evening for both leagues. Sponsors have come through in nice style to assure the financial success of starting the Pony League. Real community spirit. "If it would only warm up," says this one and that one. Brother, if it warms up like last summer, we are offering a fee to some doctor to prescribe a trip north for the sake of our health. The las\ time we went out for an evening, a waitress came up to our table and inquired, "Did you lose a comb?" Mildly startled, we replied thgt we used a wash rag on our high forehead instead of a comb. We never found out who sent her to our table. PICKUP-- You have laughed God out of your schools, out of your books, and out of your life ,but you cannot laugh Him out of your death. DAILY PINUPS: Goodness in others is inspiring, brilliance is exciting; beauty is fascinating, but sympathy is somehow most soothing. After you've dug the other guy out of his troubles, grab the shovel and throw your own in. The best you have within you grows none the worse for giving out. Being a square peg in a round hole is sure to leave you flat. ANONYMOUS HERE THERE WITH GOLF By Jimmy Kupec McHenry Loses to Palatine Matt Eichinger t was the only McHenry boy to score any points as McHenry lost to Palatine 13 to 1 \<2.• He tied his opponent 89- 89 to gain l1,^ points. Art Beck shot 90 while his opponent shot a 3 under par 69. Larry Corey had 98, his1 opponent 91. Jim Justen totalled 100 against his opponent's 95. Cable had a bad day with 108. His opponent' came in with a 95, McHenry Beats Zion-Benton Playing at McHenry Country Club, the golf team showed a little more of their normal play. Bernie Schmitt was the power hitter for McHenry as he slammed out a double with one on, then sailed a home run over the left field fence with another mate aboard. Place baby on pitcher's mound. Then pin first and third to home plate." Northern lllini Bowmen News As we recall, the first official act of "Bookie Buckie" when he joined this Plaindealer force was to get up a pool on a big horse race. Who won it? Buckie, of course. Last Saturday another big race came up, as you well know. And Buckie was up with another pool. Who had Needles? Well, now, it just happened to be a fallow named Buckie. We aren't looking for a libel suit nor are we looking for any more pools with some people. Tiie N.I.B. will hold their next meeting at the American Legion Home on May 15 at 8 p.m. All members should try to attend this important meeting. Classification cards' to be used at all shoots will be issued to members. Slides taken at the Open House meeting will be shown. A delegate,, meeting of the North Western division was held at the Huntley American Legion home on May 3. Hosts for the evening were the Elgin club. Other clubs represented were Freeport, DeKalb, Sycamore and McHenry. Attending the meeting were Duke and Irene Adams of McHenry and Bob and Vi Seymour of Crystal Lake. The »next club shoot will be held on June 3. We saw that roller skating show last Thursday night at our "Just For Fun Roller Rink" and thought it was just dandy. Those young people are really graceful as they glide over the floor. We are told that some undesirables appear on the grounds at times, but the police take very good care of them. We had that kind at dances in our day and maybe yours. Just go inside and see the fun those good kids (and some adults) are having. Mrs. Joel Wheeler passed away in our old Main street neighborhood last week and memory lane carried us back through the years in conversation with her daughters, the former Alta and Verena Wentworth. There seemed to be more time to be a good neighbor in those days. BUSINESSMEN DROWN of good golf with a 40 on the back nine. Ed Cepulis lost 3-0. This was Ed's first match and he seemed nervous oh the first nine with a 49. On the second nine, he had a 43 but still lost 92-90. Jim Justen encountered trouble on the second nine with a 50 but came in strong on the first nine with a 43 to win 3-0. His opponent shot . a 98. Bob Cable was off his usual game with 99. He had trouble with the second nine, but had a strong first nine to win it and receive one point although his opponent took the other 2 points. Score 99-95. These matches were over 18 holes. Coach Chuck Cuda of the McHenry High School is sort of out on a limb when it comes to student golf material. He urges all parents who are interested in golf, to have their 10-14 year old charges participate now. In that way your children will help good old McHenry High have a strong golf team in the future. Not much news again this week because of the weather. The ladies of McHenry C.C. event for the day Tuesday was low putt. The winners in Class A were Betty Moss, first, and Laverne Hanley, second. In Class B, Bernice Jensen took the honors for first and Agnes Freund came in second. Class C was led by Betty Rode and Mary Buckie was second. Thoy had a real good turnout for the day, thirty-four ladies being present. A group lesson was given to the ladies by Julius cloffo, the golf pro of McHenry C.C. Holloman of Riverside Drive was involved in an accident last week when his car left the road and hit a tree while headed west on Rt. 120. He said his car was crowded off the highway by another auto. Fishing is starting to pick up. A few bass have been caught in Meyer's' Bay and in different parts of the Chain of Lakes. Most of the bass have been caught on minnows and silver spoons. We talked to some fishermen at Slough Bay last Saturday. They said the water was too cold for the crappies to move into the channels. Every warm day we have had so far the fish have hit. Some crappies and bluegills have been taken out of Mud Lake. Usually by this time of the year, we would be fly-casting in the channels, but it is just too cold. If all the fishermen's prayers are answered, we should have a warm spGU by this weekend. A University of Wiscohsin scientist has found evidence through a series of experiments, that fish, like birds, bees and ants, use the sun as a navagational aid. This scientist also tells us that salmon can smell the difference between streams and thus know which one to return to when they spawn. In experiments, fish with plugged noses lost their way. Remington Arms company has introduced a completely new gasoperated automatic shotgun. It is known as the "Sportsman-58." The internal operation of this gun is unbelievably simple and involves very few moving parts. n w r START YOUR BALL ROLLING NOW! Bowl In POT EVERY SATURDAY, 11 A.M. TIL 6 P.M. The United Cerebral Palsy association of McHenry county, headed by Mrs. Benjamin Covert, operates a therapy center in Algonquin, where young cerebral palsy victims are given special training to improve their control over their muscles. Mrs. Covert said that the local CP organization hopes to establish an expanded therapy center in McHenry, and that it is also hoped to establish a special classt'oom for handicapped children in the county; It is estimated that there are at least six children in the county who could attend a first grade class under a specially trained teacher next fall. The cerebral palsy center was founded last year. At present there are nine children from all over McHenry county receiving regular treatment there, and it is believed that there are others in the county who would benefit from treatment. There will be a citizen's parade for Cerebral Palsy on Tuesday, May 15. Volunteer workers will go from door to door throughout this area asking for donations to help the drive. More volunteers are needed who are willing to spend an hour or so helping the parade. Anyone willing to help should call one of the local chairmen, who are' as follows: McHenry, Matt Freund; Johnsburg, Ethel Hein and Ann Zeller; Lakemoor, Claude Mc- Dermott; Richmond, Mrs. Louis Burke; and Wonder Lake, Fred Zandier.
