Thursday, Juno 7,1956 McHENRY PLAINDEALER PftgeThirleeii McCullom Lake News Bj Eve Levesqoe ^1 Memorable Event Memorial Day began with threatening skies and a bleak look. Many eyes turned toward the heavens with silent prayers that there would be no rain. Then, shortly before our parade and ceremony was to begin, the sun shone forth in blinding splendor. The short but impressive partes was led by the American Legion Post, No. 491, rifle squad, under the direction of Harry' Mueller, followed by the junior drum and bugler corps. About 250 spectators gathered to watch the dedication. Mrs. Martha Wike sang "The Star Spangled. Banner," accompanied by Ken Sawdo, with everyone joining in. Next came the pledge of allegiance, led by 'Jbm Olsen. The Rev. Burton Schroeder of Nativity Lutheran church, Wonder Lake, gave the invocation. Wreaths to honor our war dead were placed by Mrs. Loretta Meyer for her brother, James Bailey, Mrs. Theresa Feiter for her son, Jack, and Mrs. Ethel Myers for her nephew, Earl Fox. < £jVrt Stuhlfeier, president of the Cullom-Knoll association, who was master of ceremonies, gave a speech of dedication and read congratulatory correspondence received from U.S. Senator E. M. Dirksen, Gov. Wm. Stratton, Arthur Bidwell pro tempore of the Illinois State Senate; Charles F. Carpentier, secretary of the state of Illinois; and Orville Hodge, auditor of public ac- •c$i nts. A short address was given by Joseph R. Levesque, president of the village. The song, "God Bless America," rang in everyone's hearts as Ken Sawdo played this selection on his accordion. Mary Grace Meyer raised the flag.and a volley of tribute was fired by the rifle squad. As taps were played Win Davidson, few eyes reiined dry. The new Memorial park, of which we are inordinately proud, was properly dedicated. The original memoriam was erected by the Screwy Dozen club during the war years and was- located on the blacktop and gate six. Mrs. Theresa Schultz is to be commended on her project of restoring the memoriam and ^manning the impressive cerembnies with ffie liSl}) of Mrs. Louise Hammerstein. Ole Olsen, for his part in designing the park and organizing the work detail, also deserves unlimited praise. However, no job, big or small, can be carried out without the support and help of our residents, and there are so many lulling hands in the community. Hats off to the American Legion, who had participated in several parades earlier, and still supported us. Private, Beach or Public? Brad Scott and tools off for an evening of merriment.
