BEETLE REPORT II The elms of Illinois, already decimated in many localities by 1 phloem necrosis and the Dutch elm disease, now are facing a ; fresh threat. Elm leaf beetles, ! which eat the leaves of elms, particularly Chinese elms, are ' hard at work in Southern Illi- i nois. This beetle report comes I from Dr. L. L. English of the state Natural History Survey. He recommends a lead arsenate spray as a means of beetle con- I trol. After a losing campaign has ' been waged against elm diseases , which during the past three j years have destroyed 450 of the ! finest elms on the University of j Illinois campus at Champaign- Urbana, a school committee > has decided to plant the campus with other kinds of trees. The' sugar maple, hackberry, pin oak and red oak, Crimean linden, sweet and sour gum and the thornless honey locust are among the varieties which will be used.
