The overall car is lower, the hood and rear deck are below the fender line and a restyled Cadillac Hail fin, somewhat remindful of the Eldorado fin, has been adapted. A new instrument panel, deep post steering column and wide selection of luxurious trims are featured in interior styling. All-New Cadillac Still <iKeeps Famous "Personality1 From bumper to bumper, from top to bottom, the 1957. Cadillac is completely new. Yet, in appearance it is unmistakably Cadillac. On announcing, the new Cadillac, Don E. Ahrens, General Manager of the Cadillac Motor Car Division and Vice President of General Motors, said, "the 1967 car represents the most complete model change in Cadillac history. "Our engineers and stylists literally created a pew car this year." Ahrens said, "but still they retained its Cadillac personality. The over-all silhouette h&s been lowered as much as three inches; the hood and rear deck are lower than . the fender profile; the traditional Cadillac tail fin is restyled and two additional four-door hardtops >^>akp their appearance in 1957." These dramatic changes are to be found on eight of the ten models. The two Eldorados, the Biarritz'and the Seville, are distinctively different, featuring a rear quarter panel and rear end styling that puts the "dream car" into reality as a limited production car. "An engineering development in the form of a revplutionary new frame has allowed us to achieve our new low silhouette," Ahrens explained. "With this frame the bodj^ is secured to outrigger mounting brackets rather than the side rails of former years. Not only does this permit lowering of the car but torsional rigidity is increased. Like the rest of the (car, the front 'end styling i£ all new. Unquestionably, the cellular, grille effect, gull-wing bumpers and bumper guards are reminiscent of recent Cadillac styling, but they have been redone to tie in with the low, sweeping design of the 1957 models. Behind this front end is a 300 horsepower engine, the most powerful and the highest performance engine ever offered by Cadillac as standard equipment. This V-type overhead valve engine has a 10 to 1 compression ratio, a four-inch bore and a displacement of 365 cubic inches. Eldorado owners can have this engine modified with twin fourbarrel carburetors and developing 325 hdrsepower. With this multitude of new physical features included, in the 1957 Cadillac, a complete redecorating job was called for. And it happen- -ed. New fabrics, trims, leathers, floor coverings, and headliners are combined into the finest of interiors. sign is new. The styling creates a much longer and fleeter appearance." The wide, low front end of the 195"f Pontiac is high-lighted and protected by heavy wrap-around bumpers with integrated bombtype bumper guards. Large oval parking lamps are set into the 'ower part of the bumpers. A semicircular chrome grille arid a full width air scoop direct air flow to he car radiator. Hooded head lamps surmounted by sleek front-fender ornaments lire prominent in the front-end styling. Greater vision is achieved by lowering the hood 1.6 inchfs and increasing the windshield area 75.4 inches in the Catalinas, convertibles and custom station wagons and by 69 square inches in sedans and other station wagons. The flair of the rear fender fin houses an integrated tail and backup lam]) and a safety reflector. The rear projection of the oval tail lamp is protected by a projection in the rear bumper whVch also serves as an exhaust port on cars equipped with dual exhausts. A missile outline trim of Stainless steei sweeps the entire length of the car on each side. The Star Flight styling of the 1957 Pontiac is further accentuated by a windsplit molding in the rear fender. On the Star Chief models this torpedo- shaped windsplit is sheathed in stainless steel. The same material, brushed to a satin finish, is used on the vaned wheel discs. A full range of excitingly modern colors is available on the 16 body styles. ' » The eye catching appeal of the 1957 Pontiac is not limited to exterior styling for the newc^irs offer the most luxurious- color-keyed interiors in Pontiac history. Another influence of "dream car" styling is the 1957 Pontiacs is the deep swallow-tail steering Wheel, which adds the final touch of modern, safety design to the passenger compartment. American car buyers, who over tfie past few years have grown increasingly interested in "what's under the hood" of their new cars, Will find that Pontiac engineers have developed the 1957 car to a new level of efficiency and smooth, durable performance. !The Strato-Streak V-8 efigine, with displacement increased to 347.04 cubic inches, has higher horsepower, 10:1 compression ratio, larger manifolding, completly machined and contoured combustion chambers, larger, more efficient valves and newly designed carburetors. The 1957 line will offer engines with horsepowers of 252 and 270, and an additional extra horsepower engine especially designed for law enforcement cars. Pontiac offers a "first" in highcompression engines with its intake valve stems vented to atmospheric pressure to prevent oil being drawn into the "combustion chamber under high vacuum operating conditions. The increased piston stroke, of 3 and 9/16 inches, gives quicker acceleration and mbre instantaneous power on demand. New steel band, thermal controlled pistons are standard. The new wagons are called Caballeros a/id are offered in the Special and Century series. They are four-door models and the only midcar pillar is a sloping column which fades out of the roof molding to meet the body at the rear door handle. Buick's 17 models include only two standard sedans, both in the lowest-priced series. The Special also offer? --a standard station wagon, and there are two-door and four-door hardtops and a- convertible in each line--Special, Century, Super and. Roadmaster. On Roadmaster hardtops, additional trim molding on the rear windows and the roof is optional. A new frame has enabled Buick to lower its cars up to 3.4 inches. Side rails were spread and the body nestles between them. Balljoint suspension is used for the first time, and brake dip has beep reduced by means of an "antidive" device. Grilles have been restyled, bumpers are more massive and all models have larger windshields and new side molding treatment. Rear pillars of Roadmasters and Supers are wider and slope forward. Hoodlines were lowered and fender lines were raised. The Special developed 220 horsepower last year, while the other lines were rated at 255. Displacement has been advanced from 322 cubic inches in 1956. Buick said this was done in part by lengthening the stroke from 3.2 to 3.4 inches and increasing the bore from four to 4.125 inches. Automatic transmission is standard on Roadmaster, Super anfl~ Century models, and power steering is standard on Roadmasteis and Supers. The gasoline filler cap on a|l> models is located in the center <jjf the car and is reached through an opening in the top of the rear bumper. Interiors are of cordaveen and nylon, and a broadcloth and nylon combination is offered in the Roadmaster. This series features deep-pile carpeting with foam* rubber backing. The redesigned instrument panel has twih horizontal rolls at top and bottom. The upper panel may be removed for easier service. Both rolls are padded on Roadmaster models, and a padded upper roll is standard on Centurys and Supers. The glove compartment has been enlarged to a width of 18 inches, and the radio speaker grille nojpr is located in the top center of the panel. For the first time, the Dynaflow quadrant has been placed on the instrument panel. A novel option is a "Safety Minder" which is attached to tljf speedometer.
