Just came home from the annual baseball dinner held each year by the Johnsburg Tigers and their wives. A turkey dinner set up by Hefe termann's had everything you enjoyed in the old days of ; a sleigh ride to grandmother's home on Thanksgiving Day. • It was wonderful -- and all you could < eat. That was the trouble. But, let it be said that w^ do not grab onto that invitation each year just for a feed. The good fellowship and friendly relationship between the team and the press is something we appreciate. Manager Joe Frett and all assembled regretted that .Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan could not attend. Old "Put and Take" has been a friend of the County League for many years and has splashed a lot of ink in keeping the league alive. % Our McHenry Warriors; kept their season record intact Friday night at Woodstock after a first quarter start that looked like dark clouds were hanging. The conference schedule packs in two games for this week-end win give the Warriors a real test. Libertwille will be here Friday night. The team then picks up and travels to Zion-Benton for a Saturday night game. After Huemann fouled out at Woodstock, somebody remarked that Father McGowan's former te»m was on the floor. Father MrOowah did real well, but he should have arranged to send up one more boy (a 6' 6" rebounder^ and there is no telling how far this team could go. Our first Christmas card came from Loren Thomas, former MCHS football stalwart. Reoorts from colleges keep us .posted on former MCHS athletes. I#le Davidson is now listed 6'4" and 194 pounds of man on Valparaiso's varsity basketball team. Saw his name in the lineup against Indiana. Cornell College tells us that (Shuck Green continues to add real strength to their wrestling team. Chuck is a senior this year. WARRIORS FIGHT BACK TO DEFEAT WOODSTOCK 45-41 Face Liberiyville And Zion-Benton In Week-End Schedule BUT NO POLITICS Seventy-two years ago. the Princeton football team was maraged by a studious, unobtrusive young man. He never blustered, never gave pep talks, never ranted-- in victory or defeat. He always spoke quietly of sportsmanship, decency, honor and teamwork. One day he gathered his players together: "Men,"he said softly, "in today's game one of you favored another player who is a member of the same fraternity. "." This must stop! It will destroy •: team unity. I will have no polii tics on the team. I hate politics!" I In the next game, however, with but a few minutes left to play and the score tied, Princeton drove to their opponent's 20-yard line. Everyone expected the kicking star to -attempt a field goal. But since the kicking star was Hot a member of his fraternity, the quarterback ran the ball himself. He scored a touc " to win. Back in the dressing rdom/ the manager faced the players sternly and addressed the quarterback. . "You are a hero to everyone today, but you failed to show the proper team spirit. You played politics instead of football. I want you to turn in your uniform. There is no place for you on this team." And so the star of the game was fired because he had played politics. But the incident has a strange sequel--for the Princeton manager who so hated politics. later had a great deal to tio with politics himself. In time he became President of the United States -- Woodrow Wilson! Published in "The Record." The Warriors of McHenry High travelled' to Woodstock Friday night for their first conference game of the season and won a rousing 45 to 41 over the Blue Streaks, It can safely be reported that this was not one of the best performances ever turned in by a Warrior team, but never has' a team shown greater spunk in coming from behind to win a game. Tom Merwin, Woodstock's 6'-6" center gave McHenry a rough time in the first quarter, scoring four baskets and • five free throws. Guarding the big fellow closely only brought fouls so Coach Fulton changed the team's tactics with the result that Merwin scored only four points after his big first quarter. Woodstock got off to a 6-0 lead before Matt Eichiftger sank two free throws to break the ice. Then it went to 15-6 and McHenry called time out to talk it over. The Warriors were not sharp at this point in moving the ball and their shots were not hitting the mark. The second quarter saw a tightening up of the game, but the Streaks led 25 to 17 at half time. Press Does Trick McHenry put on the full court press in the third quarter that brought a big change in the complexion of the game. Those Warriors knew they were expected to take the play away from the Streaks and really went out and proved they have what, it takes They outscored Woodstock 17-5 in that torrid third quarter to take a 4 point lead that stood up at the finish. Jim Huemann went out on fouls in the last quarter, but Denny Conway came back into the game after a rest to score four points and aid greatly In a control game dunng the last two minutes. Jim Justen missed his first free throw, then made eight straight to bring his total scoring to 14 points. McMahon played his Usual rugged game under the nets and drove in for the final basket that made McHenry fans rest easier. Ed Caron again proved a great help when his size and steadiness were needed. Eichinger and Huemann were cold on shots in the first half, but their speed and terrific floor game was something to watch. Everybody in the gym was standing during the final minute and the roar was deafening. Play was plenty rough in spots as both teams fought and dove for the ball. That final whistle was music to McHenry ears. McHenry (45) F.O. F.T. P.F Conway 2 2 0 McMahon 3 1 3 Caron 2 3 Justen 3 8 4 Eichinger • 3 2 1 Huemann 1 4 5 TOTALS 14 •17 16 Woodstock (41) F.O. F.T. Bluegill fishing was the best near the old, Skidmore Estate on Pistakee Lake last weekend. A good number of crappies were also caught. Almost everybody went home with their buckets or sleds full. We have never caught such big bluegills through the ice in Pistakee Lake as we have this year. We do not want you • to think we are talking about monsters, but even some of the old timers say the fish are running bigger this year than they have in years. We will not try to say which is the best1 bait, but the biggest favorite is the corn borer -on a little silver spooil with a number 10 hook and a red, yellow, or black front. There are hundreds of different kinds of lures On the market and all of them work if used properly and at the right time. It is best to have a selection of colors and patterns just as in fly-fishing. Good fishing has been reported up near I?ox Lake. We have not tried it there yet, although we have always had good luck in that vicinity in the past. We noticed something , list week-end that used to happen sort of infrequently. Women icefishermen! They seem quite comfortable on the ice and there seem to be more women every time we go. Let's face it. Nothing can be done. Why, some of them catch more than their husbands do. The "fur market is down this season. Top price on mink is $25.00, »muskrat $175, raccoon $3.00, skunk $1.50, and Weasel $1.25. Raccoons are staying high because of the "Davy Crockett fad" that has just hit England. We. hope the legends "about Davy keep spreading. --JACK WALSH. Thursday, December 6; 1956 ,'-" .*5 TOWN TEAMS LOSE GAMES TO KENOSHA SPORTS CAGE MEN BOWLING NOTES The office of Dr. C. W. Klontz will be closed from Dec. 11, 1956, until April, 1957. McHenry's town basketball teams dropped a pair of games to the Kenosha Sports here Sunday night, the first team losing-52 to 43 while the second squad lost the preliminary 50 to 35. Considering the short time the locals have been organized, they performed real well against the experienced Kenosha players. Only lack of time to get in sufficient practice stood in the way of a more finished performance. Additional practice should^ result in sharper shooting and passing. The McHenry team will not have a game here next Sunday night, but will meet teams from Woodstock and Antioch on the home floor Sunday, December 16. Kenosha Sports (52) F.O. F.T. P.F.
