Carpentier said progress in the installation of electronic data processing equipment in the Drivers' License division of his office cofricides with the effective date of new provisions of the Drivers' License law to make possible the matching of the expiration date of an old license with the issuance date of the new one. On Jan. 1, this resulted in the discontinuance of a system in effect since 1948 which caused applicants to lose from a few days to as much as a month on the valid period of a license, Mr. Carpentier said. - The expiration date -of the old license, listed on the application for a new one, is punched into a card, and when that card is sent through bfte of the pressing machines, the machine automatically selects an expiration date, three years in advance for the new license, Secretary Carpentier said. To have attempted such an operation manually would have been "tremendously expensive, and the loss of a short period of time on the valid period - was permissable under the law, he said. Another advantage to the new system is that it eliminates the holding of two valid licenses at any time, Mr. Carpentier said.
