Pm* Four McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, "They turned out in great numbers last Friday night to see the high ridin' Warriors of McHenry High play host to a Libertyville team that had trimmed them earlier in the sieason. . The story was different this tirite. In spite of the game being real close in the first half, you somehow had the impression that the home team had the situation in hand. In a pleasant reversal of form, the Warriors -- instead of bogging down -- turned on the steam and gained the lead that put the game away. The final score was 67-54 and might have been 69 had a thrilling shot from mid-court by Matt Eichinger counted. The ball swished through the basket and an official motioned the count. It was later ruled that the buzzer had sounded before the ball was in Ihe air. The basket wasn't needed, but we could just imagine the turmoil that could have resulted if the game had hinged on those two points. Let us think of o more pleasant things such as the flowers that bloom in the spring. Parents of players and cheerleaders were introduced to the crowd between games. It was *eal nice. Paul Yanda and his Pep Band also drew a word of praise and a nice hand. OnT Saturday night the Warriors went over to Zion-Benton and had one heck of a time winning on overtime game 46 to 44. Mark Vycital, always a sharp shot, came through in this one. In our opinion, Mark hasn't taken ^enough shots this year in the games we have «een. The team has good balance and somebody always comes through. We thought Denny Conway hit his stride in the Woodstock game and has given tiie team a big boost. ^f^Most fains have the schedule '• well memorized at this stage and know that we have the tttUgh teams to meet again. OVERTIME WIN AT ZION KEEPS McHENRY ON TOP Varsity Warriors Win 46 to 44 Over Stubborn Zee-Bees by Bon Smith The McHenry Warriors received a big scare at Zion last Saturday night as we had to go into overtime to defeat the Zee-Bees 46 to 44. Matt Eichinger and Mark Vycital scored the two buckets in the 3 minute overtime. Matt's jump sHot from the free throw line turned out to be the winning one." We had previously beaten Zion 57-46 at home early in the season. The sixth place Zee- Bees really were out to upset us and almost succeeded. Coach Fulton's Warriors were apparently tired after last night's big victory over Libertyville and also appeared a little over-confident. As a result of this victory, coupled with Crystal Lake's victory over Woodstock, the Tigers and our Warriors are tied for the lead in the race with a 7-2 record. Both teams started off slow as Zion took a 4-0 lead. McHenry came back and took a 13-7 first quarter lead. The Warriors made only 3 of 14 shots in the second period and Zion hit 5 for 15 to tie the score at the half 21-21. We appeared to get moving in the third period as we outscored the Zee-Bees 12 to 7 to hold a 33-28 lead at the end of the third quarter. Zion came back and outscored us 14-9 in the final quarter to send the game into overtime. As previously , stated, we scored 4 joints to Zion's 2 in the overtime to. win the contest, 46- 44. Both teams were off in their shooting accuracy. Zion hit at a 30.2% and the Warriors shot only 26.8%. This was our low for the season. It came as a surprise but Antioch, a team that beat us in the Grant tournament, will be here, for a non-conference game Saturday night. On Friday, February 14 we hope to be at our best. Crystal Lake comes to town. McHenry meets Lake Park the regional at Crystal Lake. More about that later. Denny Freund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Del Freund of Wauconda, was again named on the "Prep Cage Team of the Week" by the Chicago American. Denny duplicated a 37 point total again this season and went into the conference scoring lead in a game against Hound Lake. Just to let us know that Denny does more than shoot baskets, the report tells that he snared 16 rebounds in the game. was probably inevitable after Friday night's tremendous shooting against Libertyville. The team has been shooting 40% or better in almost all recent games. We were lucky to win with a percentage that low and on an off night like we had. Mark Vycital again was leading scorer with 15 points and he also contributed 6 recoveries. Matt Eichinger scored 14 points and had 4 assists. Don Bentz had 13 rebounds. Antioch comes to town on Saturday, February 8th, for a non-conference game. Since Antioch is one of the three teams that have; defeated us, this should be a very interesting battle. (Our losses include 2 to Crystal Lake and one each to Libertyville and Antioch). The Warriors are still undefeated at home with a 7-0 record. We have received tremendous and enthusiastic support from the local fans and we hope they will keep it up. FROSH-SOPHS ADD TWO VICTORIES FOR 12-2 RECORD The Warrior Frosh-Soph squad added. two more victories to their record the past weekend as they downed Libertyville Friday night in the local gym by a 61 to 51 score, and then toured to Zion-Benton on Saturday and edged the Zee-Bees by a 56 to 53 count. John Steinbach led the team against the Wildcats from Libertyville as he registered 21 points, 17 in the first half; The Warriors held a 32 to 26 half time lead which they were able to increase to 49 to 40 by the end of the third quarter. Fouls sidelined Mike Creighton and John Olson for the second period, but Tom Creighton and Paul Steffan took over quite adequately. Mike Low also came off the bench to do a splendid job. The Warriors outscored Libertyville 12 to 11 in the last period which added up to the 61-51 victory. Mike Creighton and John Olson did a terrific job. of rebounding which allowed the Warrior fast break to operate successfully. Jim Hester followed Steinbach in scoring with 12 points, followed closely by Bill Oeffling and Olson with nine points each. At Zion Saturday night it was a close battle all the way. At the quarter the Warriors led 17 to 16, btit fell back by intermission 29 to 28. Zion outscored in the third 'period 15 to 8, but that proved to be the "turning point" in the game. The local lads were outscored 16 to 13 in the final period, but the lead built up in the third quarter proved adequate. The victory was truly a team effort. Bill Oeffling and Jim Hester led the Warriors with 18 and 17 points respectively. Oeffling made 10 out of 11 free throws which helped greatly to the Warriors shooting 18 out of 21 free throws for the entire game. This sensational foul shooting provided the Warrior victory, as the Warriors were outscored from the field $2 field goals to 19. 8 The young Warriors season mark now -stands at 12 wins and 2 losses. WARRIORS BEAT LIBERTYVILLE TO TIE FOR LEAD Rivals mm A Single Bill McCarroll is going to start shooting sports pictures for this sport page. Look for some good action shots of these basketball games the next few weeks. We must close up this column for the week and take off on another short (we hope) stay in , Madison where the comforts of a hospital bed await us. The doctors are trying to patch us up so we can play center field for the Cubs next season! For your convenience we now have money orders available at our drive-in window. It was "Parents' Night" at the high school and Coach Fulton's team sure made a good impression ^before a capacity crowd. Before the game the visiting Wildcats and our Warriors had identical 14-4 records. The victory was even more impressive because Libertyville had previously beateh us 77-63 at Libertyville on December 6. The Warriors were really up for this battle which resulted in our fourth straight victory. Since Crystal Lake defeated Barrington at Tigertown, three is a 3-way tie for first place. The game started qjit as a high scoring affair as the Warriors took a 20-18 lead at the quarter. We outscored the speedy Wildcats in the second period 14-13 to take a 34-31 lead at the half. I suppose many local fans were wondering if thie Warriors were going to continue their second half procedure lit which they let the opponents outscore them and close.the gap. Well, for the first tfitife in the past 5 games, coach pulton's boys outplayed the ^opponents in the second half. We outscored the Wildcats 33 to 23 in the second ijalf. The turning point of the game was the third period as we outscored Libertyville 21 to 10. We continued our sharp shooting as we shot 50% from the floor (27 for 54) to the Wildcat's 39.1%. This is practically the opposite of our previous encounter at Libertyville where they shot 56.3% to our 38.9%. This was a great team victory, but, as always, certain players must be singled out for special performance. Mark Vycital played a fine game as he scored 18 points and had 6 recoveries; Matt Eichinger scored 17 points; Denny Conway had Jj$g?®ssists; Jijh "justeh"*'tB^v:jj^ii^yhds^ Don Bentz had IS* rewinds. Libertyville's star^Vcenter, Wally Sitz, was outfhsvith a bad ankle and didn't sliit up. However, most basketball followers agree that his absence had nothing to do vyrfth the Wildcats' defeat^ as the Warriors really wanted thjg victory Zion-Benton 16 13 8 16--53 Shop at Home and played fine ball, ji McHenry: FG PF Justen 4 l 2 Conwiy 4 0 1 Bentz 4 3 3 Eichinger 8 1 1 Vycital 6 6 1 Benson 1 ' 2 0 . The extra money involved is supposed to be used for further fishing and water development in this state. Just a reminder. The Illinois hunting and fishing licenses expired January 31. The 1958 licenses have been issued so be sure to obtain one before you ( go hunting or fishing again. Some nice bluegills were caught at Lake Geneva the earlier part of last weekend, but they have slowed down considerably and from what we gather the Chain of Lakes are at a standstill as far as fishing is concerned.
