.1 THE McHSNSY PLAINDEALER KCdlom Un lUCKTOPROAD by Eve Levesque ^ Forty miles per hour is the ; v&gal speed limit on the black- ~top and will become effective as soon as the new speed limit ^ signs are posted. This should '-fee done sometime in the near future. ; The speed limit within the 'Corporate limits of the village , has been raised from 15 mph. to 20 mph. These two changes have been made to conform to surveys conducted by the IUi- • nois State Division of Highways, in various parts of the state. (No surveys were taken in our vicinity). These speed limits were found to be safe • driving speeds for the majority ••of drivers. VUlage Council •I village board met for a N . special meeting. Monday, Feb. 3 in the beachhouse. >>. . The difficulty of keeping West End Road open was discussed. With the prevailing winds coming over the field, the snow keeps drifting across . the roadway, blocking traffic. iTiis road WILL be plowed along with the other streets in village--but it still may W6t always be free and clear. y. "The motion was made and parried unanimously to begin Negotiations and getting bids ' |ior the re-surfacing of East- ...wtood Drive. This final step v Mil complete this particular fc,- Overhead lighting at each of gates was discussed. Waller Behnke, service representative for Public Service was present and explained the serv- -ice. *ITie feftsability of installing these lights was discussed and reported at the next meeting which has held, Monday, Feb. 10. Chief-of-police Larry Murray, fa making his report to the board made a recommendation tljat all police officers take courses in first aid, both standard and advanced Far TOO FEW villagers have, shown proper interest in, the1 village board meetings. These : officials were elected by YOU --the people. Their duty is to serve you in the best possible . manner. But YOUR duty as a r voter is to support them also. i The jobs--at best--are thankless positions and constantly subject to criticism. The greatest attendance occurs when a protest is to be registered. The president and each and every trustee ejttends a cordial Invitation to attend and learn FIRST HAND!? Put down the rumors that have been spread. lff6o% Don't do it! Drop a gallon jug of milk on your toe, that Is! I tried it last Sunday and the experience proved very unfunny. It was a v^ry unnecessary accident and one I shall surely guard against in the future. A local milk company, operated by Bud Elberson and Dick RCizicka can be assured of one thing. Their milk containers are practically indestructible. Sbrry I can't say the same for my big toe! It's fractured! Ladies of the Lake The women will hold their first meeting of 1958 tonight, Thursday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. in the beachhouse. All old members and any potential new ones--are welcome and invited. Come yourself, .and bring a friend. Home from the Hospital So happy to say that Bob Smith is home again after an extended stay in Passavant hospital. We're hoping that he will be feeling better with every day that passes. Don't forget to drop him a card. Time hangs heavy during convalescence. Jake Kantorski increased the population of McHenry hospital for a few days last week. He was in for examination and treatment. Happy we are, that he, too, is feeling better and able to be home. Ready for Occupancy Carl Berquist has made a small scale model of his own home, complete with eaves and a TV antenna for his small feathered friends. A few bird families have looked the place over, but as yet, none have rented. Bet the demand for the house will be great in the spring! Our Valentines Include Mrs. Mary Tomasello and Paul fritz, Jr. who will be celebrating their natal day, Friday, Feb. 14. Do you send them a valentine, a birthday card, or both? Ray Aalto, a "39er" natch, will toast his birthday with the usual glass of orange juice, on Monday, Feb. 17. Deepest Sympathy " to Mrs. Helene Harth on the 4 untimely passing of her father, Peter Lieser, 65, on Monday, Feb. 3. Tile Liesers had been summer residents in Lakewood subdivision for forty years, and permanent residents for the past twelve. The details of the funeral and burial were covered in last week's Plaindealer but your reporter wished to offer condolences from the entire community to the Harth family in their time of bereavement. Crutches restrict one's ability to get around. Keep me abreast of the local gossip and "news doin's" by phone. That's 2171. With luck, we'll see you next week!--Unless I drop a concrete slab on my head! STATE VACATIONERS ' Gov. Wiliiain ©. Stratton revealed that while the number of vacationers who came to Illinois from other states dropped slightly in 1957, the prospect of a substantial increase in 1958 was very good. "Illinois had 9% million vacationers last year," the governor said, but we expect a substantial increase this year when Illinois will be commemorating the centennial of the Lincoln- Douglas debates." Debate centennials will be' celebrated at Ottawa, Aug. 21-24; Freeport, Aug. 27; Jonesboro, Sept. 10- 15; Charleston, Sept. 18; Galesburg, Oct. 7; Quincy, Oct. 11- 13; and Alton, Oct. 15. Springfield will commemorate the centennial of the famous "Houfee Divided" speech on June 16. In addition to these centennials, Beardstown will have a re-enactment of the Duff Armstrong "Almanac Trial" on May 6 and 7. by Lillian Bossier On Feb. 11, we have members' night. Sister Elsie Keiker and Brother Roy DOdd will be in the East. I'm sure we will have a wonderful showing on this night. On Feb. 10, we will have our annual Washington's Day card party at 1:30 p.m. at the Masonic hall. Sister Elsie is still baking a few cherry pies. Perhaps you can help her. See you on Feb. 11 at 8 p.m. For your convenience we now have money orders available at our drive-in window.
