Manager Larry Stilling of IN Shamrocks will probably lbse some sleep this, week trying to figure ways of beating t h e s e f r i e n d l y r i v a l s f r o m johnsburg. And Manager Joe Frett of the Tigers will be putting all of his vast experience on the line to bring his team through to victory. We think the rivalry between these two teams is the liveliest in the entire McHenry County ^League. They may go out and quench their thirst together after the game, but it is all for keeps while the game is in progress. PONY LEAGUE WILL SPONSOR BENEFIT DANCE SATURDAY EVENING AT V.F.W. HALL Some of you haven't seen a local ball game in some time. This is a good one for you to take in and get back in the game from a home town standpoint. We were highly indignant at the way the Latin-Americans treated our Vice President Nixon, but while listening to the Sox game Tuesday night felt like carrying a "Go Home Yankees" banner. Of course, we told Ed Doyle how sorry we felt for the Cubs while they were taking a plast e r i n g f r o m t h e P i r a t e s t h e same night. Come to think of it, he grinned like he .didn't believe us. Honestly, there is nothing we would rather see than the Cubs and Sox in a World Series. We should live so long! The Plaindealer had a nice note from Frank Justen this week from "Silver Glen Ranch" i n C h o w c h i l l a , C a l i f o r n i a . Frank renewed his subscription for three years and says he and his family are still looking forward to the day when we will ring their door The new Pony League season will be under way in another few weeks and things are really humming. The diamond will be in better shape this year, and we have a new broad* casting booth and a new covering of pea gravel all around the diamond so it will be more comfortable on the feet as well as> looking neater. This year we have two new managers, Tony Pintozzi of the Giants, and Lou Rogers of the Cards. ' and we want to wish them the best of luck and welcome them to Pony League. Listening to the grapevine, I understand all the managers figure they have a winning team so it should be an interesting year. All of our old sponsors are with us again except the Admiral Corp. which team was taken over by the McHenry State Bank, so we are set for this coming year for sponsors. As you should all know by now, we have our Dance coming up next Saturday night, May 24 at 9:00 P.M. at the V.F.W. Clubhouse. The advance ticket sales are very good according to our ticket chairman, Dick Jager. He has picked himself a good ticket committee in Dick Hester, Ralph Bennett and Joe Etten. Anyone not securing tickets in advance can secure them at the door. We will have a nice door prize and a good many basebail gloves and equipment to be handed out during the evening. We only hope the parents as well as our many friends will come out and make this evening a great success. There is nothing that makes our treasurer, Earl Walsh, happier than when we are turning money over to him. See you at the dance. FOX VALLEY RIDERS •>V;rx' Due to illness in our linotype department we are unable to have Little League and Pony League schedules set up this week as intended. The Little L e a g u e w i l l g e t u n d e r w a y Sunday, June 1st and the Pony League will start the following day. Will try to give you the whole works next week. Had never heard this expression before, but it lingers with us this week: "Nothing is ever transplanted without withering for a while." This sometimes applies to people. MINOR COLLISION Geraldine F. Jensen of Mc- Cullom Lake and Edward G. Suchy of Cary suffered minor injuries in a collision on Rt. J20, east of the city, last weekend. • Fox Valley Riders held its regular meeting at De Young's farm, near our track where a Scrambles event will be held in June. , . A discussion was held on a. future, permanent meeting place. It was decided not to have any more meetings in places where liquor is sold, because of the number of minors in our club. We wish to thank Police Chief Joe Grobel for meeting with us last Wednesday and offering some help and suggestions for a permanent club to be built and maintained by the club. Our club has decided to purchase or lease on .option to buy so that we can erect a permanent building for our organization to hold meetings and recreational activities. Everyone concerned is looking for suitable property in McHenry, Wauconda, Cary, Crystal Lake area that would suit our purpose. We would appreciate any helpful hints as to where we can find such property, perferably an unusable piece of farm ground away from communities. If anyone has information of such property please contact Fox Valley- Riders, c/o Robert C. MerKn, R.R. 2, Box 49, McHenry, 111. We also wish to welcome our five new members, Bill and Miriam Rothenberger, Dick Oker, Terri Dodd, Jerry ReinhartX More news next week concerning our activities. TIGERS DEFEA1 ALGONQUIN 6-5 IN 11 INNINGS It took the Johnsburg Tigers eleven innings to convince the visiting Algonquin nine last Sunday that they were hot going to spoil plans for victory in the first home game of the season. The final scor? found the Tigers on the winning si<Je of a 6-5 score. ! Lore^i Freund started as the Tiger pitcher and was a real classy performer for six shutout innifigs. Came the seventh and Loren's control went haywire.. Algonquin scored all of their 5 runs in this inning. Klapperich took over and held fort until a couple of old pros got together and "put a stop to the game in the eleventh. Lloyd Freund cracked a twob a g g e r , h i s f i f t h h i t o f ' t h e afternoon. Art Johnson saw his duty and he did it! A base hit sent Lloyd across the plate with the winning run. The Tigers again broke out in a rash of base hits, but were unable to get a' comparable number of runners around the bases. Next Sunday Johnsburg plays the Shamrocks at McHenry. It was also our third Straight conference defeat and Qjur record is now concluded at 4-7 (overall) and 3-3 in conference play. Our team looked better in its final game than it has looked for quite some time, but the Wildcats f e a t u r e d s t r o n g p i t c h i n g a n d timely hitting to assure the vict$ ry- : Libertyville scored 4 runs in the home half of the second on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 2 errors. Kristan . singled, advanced to .Second on Peterson's error and moved to third on a single by Geary to load the bases. Collins then hit to right field and Moss bobbled the ball temporarily, allowing 2 runs to score. Sawyer then singled to drive home the third run and the Other run was forced in on a Itralk with the bases loaded. The Wildcats added another $pdly in the fifth on an error, a walk, and a single by Colons. Our only run came in the seventh as Bentz was safe on g a n d e r s ' e r r o r a n d B u j a k drove him all the way around t^ith a double to left center. Creutz pinch singled, but Steinbach grounded out to end the rally. Sawyer pitched fine ball as he allowed 7 hits and no earned runs. He struck out 6 and walked only one.. ^Steinbach didn't pitch too badly but the errors came in costly situations. Ron Smith led' our hitting attack with 2 singles. McHenry suffered a somewhat disastrous finish after a surprisingly fast start but the young team showed definite signs of being a winner next year. This team had only 4 seniors on the roster of lettermen. (Bujak, Justen, Bentz, and Benson.) A summary of the season including personal performances and game highlights will appear next week. It was a poor demonstration of defensive play as McHenry committed, four errors. Grayslake opened the jgiarne with 2 runs off Claybaugh. (These were the first earned runs Tom has given up since the season's start.) Tom was very wild as he hit a batter and walked three. These odd circumstances combined with a hit accounted for the two runs. After Claybaugh walked two and allowed a jsihgle to load the bases in the third, "Mac" brought in John Steinbach to quell the rally. John would have gotten out in fine style had not Roti dropped Hebert's pop fly to make the score 3-0. Grayslake clinched the game in the ninth by scoring 4 more runs. Thennes singled to lead off the inning and this was followed by 2 Walks, 2 sacrifices, and 3 errors which accounted for all of their runs in the seventh. The Warriors finally came t o l i f e i n t h e s e v e n t h . A f t e r there was ohe out, Schaefer doubled down the right field line. Justen walked to put men on first and second and Schaefer scored on Benson's single, Roti then hit into a fielder's choice at third base which left men on first and second with 2 out. Bentz then tapped one in front of the plate and the G r a y s l a k e c a t c h e r t h r e w t h e ball into right field, another run scoring. Ron Smith, who missed two games after getting beaned by the Libertyville pitcher, doubled down the left field foul line ,to drive in the final run of the afternoon, Box Score: McHenry: AB R H were intrigued by the game. They saw a golfer knock the ball in the rough and haves a hard time getting it out. Then he got into a sand trap and took several strokes before getting it out. At leAgth he got a good shot and the ball trickled directly into the cup.
