•vm Eight POST 491 by Mary Einspar The American Legion auxiliary will sponsor lilini Girls State again this year. This phase of the auxiliary program comes under the Americanism program, YOUTH and COMMUNITY PROJECTS. Mrs. Lillian Bolger, Girls State chairman of McHenry unit No. 491 announces that Miss Sharon Curulewski has been chosen the best qualified girl to attend the 1958 session of Illini Girls State, to be held from June 17 to June 24. 1958, on • the campus of MacMurray college, Jacksonville. The purpose of Illini Girls State is to provide citizenship training for approximately 485 junior high school girls; to afford them the opportunity to live together as' self governing citizens; to learn "by doing" . the duties and responsibilities as well as the rights and privileges of American citizenship, in order that they may better understand and participate in the functioning of our government. Girls State is a program of education in the American form of government; eligibility is limited to girls who are interested and have completed or are in their third year of high school and are selected because of their honesty, leadership, good character, scholarship and cooperativeness. When the school is completed. two of these citizens are selected by the .girls to attend the auxiliary's "Girls Nation" in Washington, D. C. which is held the first week of August. Her6 the girls are taught the functions of our government on a National level. They attend the church of their choice on Sunday morning. They spend one day in Springfield visiting the buildings used in our state government. Our Girls State citizens are counseled, guided and instructed by teachers who are experienced in civics and government. Visiting last week with a good many, we found most of them are . pretty much like other people we meet -- friendly not just bedause they happen to be seeking office but because they have an interest in others. The fact that they are serving in office is really not much different than serving the public in any other way except that everybody knows everything yoii do. It reminds us a little of a newspaper, which probably, makes more mistakes than any other business. The only difference is that everybody (sees ours. Now we are most happy to correct our mistakes, if possible, or at least to say we're sorry, but we c h o o s e t o i g n o r e t h e f e w people who offer their criticism anonymously.
