Sv&tS>' THE MCHEWRY PLA^TDEALER Thuraday, May 29. 19S8 &tj £astJ& WtdUh. • |;;It seemed like old times as We parked our chair down the left field line at the McHenry ball diamond last Sunday to yratch another Johnsburg-Mc- Henry ball game. While we watched each play with interest, our mind wandered back through memory lane. We never had more fun than when we picked up Matt Niesen and Walt Freund and took off for a ball game. They ,had a keen interest in the game and conversation was never dull. Matt kept track of the schedule and told us old time yarns. Walt, of course knows the game like few oth ers do and taught us more fine points than we ever knew. McHENRY LITTLE LEAGUE WILL OPEN NEXT SUNDAY, JUNE 1st WITH ALL MAJOR TEAMS IN PLAY Joe Sutton came over to g r e e t u s a n d s o m e w h e r e through the dust storm we think we saw Bob Knox. They are the kind of fans who never lose interest in the game and our local teams. Ben Freund was giving us a good natured ribbing about our unpainted scoreboard and lack of loudspeaker system. Guess we will have to promote those improvements. Sometimes wonder if we natives appreciate the recreational facilities in our community. Met a stranger, while watching a softball game at the V.F.W. grounds this week, who was greatly impressed with all that had been done to • provide rec r e a t i o n f o r d i f f e r e n t a g e groups. Of course, there is need for continued effort, but this fellow made us appreciate what we have. Saw some kids "goin* barefoot" recently--a rare sight these days. Was a time when kids took off their shoes the day school let out and dreaded Sunday morning when we had to squeeze into them again. ' There is real merit in the driver training program in our high scho6L Now we\ wonder if something won't have to be done to train bicycle and scooter riders. Some |of them swish jright through stop signs. Until they can be taught, it is up to the auto drivers to use real |aution. Little League opens Sunday June 1 -- Triple Header ---All the major league teams will see action. Game time 1 p.m New look in Little League Park. We have a new grass infield -- many hours of hard work in grading, seeding and watering. If. we ever get the vine to grow in centerfield, we'll have another Wrigley field right here in McHenry. Th#re is also a new well behind the first base dugout. This will be for drinking purposes and sprinkling of the new field. At 2:15 next Sunday we will introduce the managers of the major league and minor league teams. Also at this time, Bob Frett, president of the Riverside Athletic club, will make a presentation in ^he club's behalf to the MeHehry Little League. Help Wanted We urge every father, brot h e r a n d u n c l e o f t h e b o y s playing the 1958 season to help us get the park in shape for the,, opener. Work will begin Thursday nite and corttinue Friday after the parade, and all day Saturday. So please come out and help us. LEGION NINE WINS 64 OVER MARENGO Coach Thomas OlC ; To Good Start In First Game at Helm By Ron Smith The McHenry Legion team traveled to Marengo last Sunday and returned victorious with a 6-4 win undef- their belts. It was a good start for new coach Jack Thomas and his assistant, Jack Vick. There are only four returning starte r s f r o m l a s t y e a r ' s t e a m which went downstate and finished with a 20-3 record. The team is made up of several high school varsity players and a number of frosh-soph players. McHenry took a 2-0 lead in the second as Moss doubled, and scored when thie centerfielder, Schmitt, dropped Gates' fly bail. Three walk's followed which forced Gates across^ Marengo scored in the third as Nelson walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on Rammien's line double to centerfield. McHenry added one in their half of-the fourth when Creutz was hit by a pitch, Schaefer walked, and Roti singled to drive Creutz home. The score was increased to 4-1 in the fifth as Moss singled and scored on Ron Creutz's long triple to right center. 'Marengo tied the score ir\ the sixth on 2 hits, a walk, and 2 hit batsmen. John Gates won the game for Us when he tripled home Moss who had doubled in the seventh. John later scored on a wild pitch for our final run. John Moss took batting honors as he had a perfect' 3 for 3 day with a walk, a single and 2 doubles. Creutz and Gates tripled for the long hits of the afternoon. Claybaugh was rather wild but pitched himself out of most jams. Box Score: McHenry: AB R H RBI J. Schaefer, SS 2 T. Roti, 2B J. Sanford, 3B R. Smith, CF J. Justen, IB J. Moss, LF J. Gates, RF R. Coaoji McCracken( p young team got off to a terrific: start but slumped badly ^after the Barrington defeat and finished with a 4 won, 7 lost record. In conference play, the Warriors finished second with &. 3-3 :won-lost record. Zion, Giys^al Lake, E^nd Barrington tied for the championship. MqKenry won its fir^t three conference games and lost its Mist three. The Barrington defeat was the turning point in the seAon. After this game, our tejamMwas never as sharp mentally a.', we had seen. The pitchirig, Which was expected to be rather weak, turned in steady performances throughout" jthe year. Claybaugh, Steinbach, and Bujak gave our team three fine pitchers. The,/ hittjng ^ was not quite as" good as anticipated, especially' in the clutch. Our fielding was very good during the first half, but it declined /considerably during the latter part of the season. Individual leaders and personal performances include the following: Don Bentz led the team in batting with a .351 average, in hits (13), in home runs (1) and he was second in runs batted in with 6. Ron Smith was second in batting avefage with .313, second in hits (10), second in stolen bases (4), and first in runs batted in with 7. Tom Roti was second in runs scored with 8, first in doubles (4), first in triples (1), and first in stolen bases (6). Jack Schaefer was first in runs scored (9), first in doubles (4), first in triples (1), and first in walks with (6). Roger Benson was first in1 home runs (1), first in walks (6), and first in strikeouts (11). This team had 13 lettermen and is losing only 4 (Bentz, Benson, Justen, and Bujak) seniors. With nine returning, lettermen plus a second place Frosh-Soph team, our outlook is especially bright for next year. The lettermen returning include Jack Schaefer (SS), Ron Smith (LF), Tom Roti (3b), Jim Peterson (lb), Johrf Moss (RF), Ron Creutz (RF-C), John Steinbach (P), Tom Claybaugh (P), and Mike Low (2b). 3-2 Tom Claybaugh struck out 14 in 6 games and had an era of 0.59. 0-3 John Steinbach struck out 29 in 7 games and his era was 2.08. 1-2 Ray Bujak struck out 18 in 4 games and had an era of 5.46. Mr. McCracken expressed satisfaction with the team's play this year. He looks forward to a fine year in 1959. . Mention should also be given to Paul Mai^ili, Frosh-Soph coach, and Cliff Fulton, Freshmen coach, who had fine teams this year. They are responsible for developing players for future varsity ball.
