.... • v.- , THE MCHEWRY fe'SV.";'. r 'lw! 0* Jhj £clh& U/tdUfi. The rain stayed away long jinough for the Pony League grand opening last Sunday and a better than average crowd was on hand. v After watching the first game, we motored up to Johnsburg to see the finish of the County All-Star game. Plenty of action as the Tigers came from behind to beat the All- Stars. Johnsburg will play in the state tournament and from where we sat last Sunday it appeared the team is going to be plenty strong. Madden was at short and Lloyd Freund at second. That should make a good combination. Of course, Manager Joe can shift Lloyd to any infield position if the need arises. We also noted that Dick Hiller is home and playing ball with the same old vigor.. He gives the team a big lift. Now comes Terry Britz to strengthen the pitching staff. Terry is big - and strong - and can fire that ball. Yep. It looks like Manager Joe is going to have quite a ball club come tournament time. BENEFIT GAME AT V.F.W, PARK THIS EVENING Being Played For Former Mate Who Is Polio Victim Being unable to cover much ground the last year or so, we have welcomed help in the sports department. Our latest addition is Lee Hiller, new reporter for the Tiger team. Now, if we can find a writer to cover the Shamrock games, things should be looking up. The line forms to the right. Pickups: Says a local cynic: "The only reason a great many families don't own an elephant is that they never have been offered an elephant for $1 down and $1 a week." Ed Doyle is vacationing so we thought it might be a rest for us as well. Now we suspect that dicker of setting up a committee to take over while Sue is absent. The worst crowd $e have to deal with is right, in the Plaindealer office. ; Monday night the Sox. shut (nit the Yankees and our pals Were real sweet about everything. Tuesday night the Yankees lowered the boom on our pbor little old White Sox and boy oh boy do they jump out of their chairs to greet us. It's that Doyle influence. The University of Illinois has had two football coaches since 1913 - Robert Zupke and Ray Eliot. During that same period,, the University has had eight presidents. Make up your own mind. The V.F.W. Softball League is sponsoring a Benefit Game Thursday. June 26 at 8:00 p.m. for A1 Fritz, former player of several years standing, who contacted polio 3 years ago. Four representatives from seven teams will make up the group that will play Bimbo's, the team that is in 1st place. When polio hit A1 on August 31. 1956, he was completely paralized except for partial use of his left arm. He is now confined to a wheel chair, wearing a back brace and two full leg braces. At the age of 28 years, this former athlete is studying accounting throueh a home course i?iven by LaSalle University. He started this course a year ago aher an 8-month stay in the Evanston hospital. A1 Fritz has shown the spirit it takes to help himself. A physical therapist also helps by coming to his home twice each w'eek. Now comes his former teammates and opposing players ready to give it all they have in a benefit game. A^ large crowd with generosity in their hearts can make this a grand event in our community. The county baseball league swings into the second round next Sunday with teams squared off as follows: Mandy's at Hebron Algonquin at McHenry Crystal Lake at Dundee Elgin VFW at Johnsburg , Richmond at Woodstock They are having a big carnival at Johnsburg this weekend, so as an added attraction, the Tigers will play Kenosha at 3 p.m. Saturday, then play host to Elgin V.F.W. nine on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Manager Larry Stilling hopes to get the Shamrocks off to a flying start against Algonquin in a home game Sunday. This '58 Shamrock team has some real enthusiastic ball players with the spirit to win some games. and COAST GUAI0 WILL INSPECT PASSENGER CARRYING BOATS DAILY PINUPS: Out of the mouths pf babes come little echoes. Chicago--All boats less than 65 feet in length which carry more than six paying passengers on navigable waters * in the United States now are subject to inspecion by the U. S. Coast Guard, according to a reminder issued by Command e r Joseph Change, Qoast Guard officer in charge of marine inspection at Chicago. Inspection of such vessels became mandatory this mqpth, under Public Law 519 passed by the 84th Congress. Any owner, operator or agent of such a boat, which does not have a current Coast Guard certificate of inspection, should file an application for inspection with that agency before placing the vessel in operation. Passenger boat operators in northern Illinois should ask for the application forms from Officer in Charge. Marine Inspection, 10101 Ewing Avenue, Chicago 17, Illinois. That pffice has jurisdiction over the area bounded on the northwest by Warren, 111., on the southwest by West Jersey, 111., on the McHenry's Po n y League field was officially opened Sunday, June 22. Earl R. Walsh acted as master of ceremonies and introduced the managers apd the members of the different teams as they marched onto the playing field to music provided by Glenn Peterson and Gerald Miller. As the boys and spectators stood at attention the flag was raised on the center field flag pole and the 1958 season was in full swing. The past week fans saw many exciting games. On June 18, the Cards beat the Sox 4-2 with Morenz the winning pitcher allowing 2 hits and striHing out 10. He also had a home run. Billy DeCicco was good in defeat with 14 strike outs and allowing 6 hits. Dave Klapperich also got a home run for the Cards. Friday night's game between the Sox and the Yanks was won by the Sox 11 to 4. Rourke was the winning pitcher. De- <"icco had a home xrun for the Sox. On Sunday the boys really gave the fans a good show. We were glad to see a few more of the parents out to these games, but there is still room for a lot more parents. There are plenty of good seats and we certainly hope, that more parents will show up. The first game of the afternoon was won by the Braves when they defeated the Yanks 11 to 5. Bobby Gates was the winning pitcher and he also contributed a home run. Vernon Peterson made a home run also. The last game of tM double header was really a humdinger. The Giants led all the way until the seventh inning when the Sox tied itl^Upf ; tljeh went on to score.the winning run in the extra inning. Monday night the Braves beat the Cards 16-11 in a slugfest. In the second inning Rex Hester got a grand-slam homer for the Cards. Morenz got two homers for' his team. For the Braves. Winkel had two home runs, Templeman, Gates and Peterson each had home runs. Peterson% also was given a home run when the ball was lost in the tree down the right field line. Again we urge you parents to come out to the Pony League field on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights and Sunday afternoons for some real good baseball. TIGERS OUTLAST ALL-STARS IN r BENEFIT GAME v Terry Brits Siopil;' Baiters In Relief l;f Role To Win 12-fc LAURAYNE CONWAY IN QUARTER-FINALS, COLLEGIATE MEET Laurayne Conway, niece of Mrs. Roy Kent of this city, reached the quarter-finals of the National Intercollegiate Golf Tournament held at Ames, Iowa. After a" qualifying/round of 88, Miss Conway played and defeated Judy McCoy of Iowa 5 and 4. The following day's play saw Miss Conway play Meriam Bailey of Northwestem University. Miss Conway held a 3 up advantage over defending champibn, Miss Bailey, on the 14th hole only to . encounter a streak of wildness which saw Miss Bailey win on the 18th green. READ THE WANT ADS by Lee Hiller It was a cloudy day at Johnsburg as the Tigers beat the county All-Stars in the annual benefit game for the'injured players of the league. The final score was 12-7. Terry Britz, newly acquired by the Tigers, starred in relief in the final seven innings allowing no runs. . The Tigers started the - scoring in the first with a pair or runs. The County All-Stars came back with a big seven run second which gave the .Ti gers something to do. However, they came up with four in the bottom of the inning to make the score 7 to 6. Home plate was not crossed again until the seventh inning when the home town boys came up with three big runs. They a d d e d t h r e e m o r e i n t h e eighth to put the game on ice. Dick Hiller, just home from college was the big man with the stick with a single, double and a triple. Saturday, June 28, the Tigers havt? a non-league game with Kenosha. ,' With the added strength the Tigers now have. Manager Joe Frett feels they will be pretty tough to beat. He has* quite a few young pitchers now to go'along with their strbiig hitting power. . Your reporter hopes to see most of you fans at the games in the future.
