FOUR HOME HUNS PACE LEGION 14-10 WIN AT By R state baseball tourna t takes an added interest r followers in this area since Johnsburg Tigers defeated ' {Jardner of Chicago last week a real uphill battle. McHENRY PLAENDEALEH TIGERS DOWN GARDNER IN STATE TOURNEY With their shortstop, Mad- 1 den, injured in the first inning, it looked like the Tigers were falling apart. But, as Manager Joe Frett explained, he haK, players who may be fooled the first or second time up, then look out. "Moose" Liebert got a key hit and pitched great ball in relief to pull the team from a 6 to 1 deficit to an 8 to 6 victory. Sonny Miller got three hits and looked good at third base. A r t J a c k s o n ' s t h r o w s f r o m centerfield were sharp. Lloyd Freund drove in the evening run with a line triple. Wally Frett got a key hit. Tom Huemann threw out a couple of runners at second base. And Manager Joe did the worrying. Those are just a few of the things we remember. Next Thursday night, July 24th, the Tigers face a strong Aurora nine at 6 p.m in Elgin's Wing Park. If they can win this one, there is no telling how f a r t h e y may g o . T h e boys are on a hitting spree. It was quite an experience to visit St. Vincent's Orphanage in Freeport last week. One little fellow hung on "to our hand until it looked like we would have to bring him home with us. Seeing those children makes one realize the wonderful work being done. The orphanage is well equipped, clean and provides whqlesome recreation. What we s&w in those eyes was a longing for parental love and affection. Many of us should send good clothing to such places, not worn out junk. Play Aurora Next Thursday Night At Elgin Wing Park 4 The Johnsburg Tigers, behind excellent relief pitching by big right-handed Liebert. posted a victory in the first r o u n d o f t h e I l l i n o i s S t a t e S e m i - P r o f e s s i o n a l B a s e b a l l tournament. It was a come from behind game as the Tigers committed three errors in t h e f i r s t i n n i n g t o g i v e t h e Park- team a three to one edge. Gardner Park had the better hand at the end of five innings, leading 6 to 1. Up to this point in the game Johns burg had only two hits. Ir the top of the sixth, Jacksor led off by striking out. Oeffling then singled and Miller followed v^th his first of three hits for the evening. Frett was safe on a fielder's choice and Huemann popped to second for the second out. Liebert then hit solidly through short and third, scoring Oeffling and Miller. Gene Freund walked to load the bases and Dick Hiller struck out to end the threat. The Tigers tied the score in the seventh and pushed across one run each in the eighth and ninth for the winning margin. In the first inning the service of Ron Madden, shortstop, was lost on a slide at home plate. The fans are hoping to see Ron playing ball again T h u r s d a y n i g h t w h e n t h e y p l a y A u r o r a i n t h e s e c o n d round of the tourney. From all reports Aurora has a very good ball team. Johnsburg: AB R H As we left, we asked one -young lady if there was anything she wanted or needed that we .could sen^. To our great surprise, replied, "No thank you. I have everything here." A1 Schaefer, the butcher m a n , h a s b e e n f e e d i n g o u r daughter a story that * Leo Smith has turned from the Sox to the Cubs. Say it isn't so! And that reminds us to thank you Cub fans for the large envelope received in the mail (Doyle Delivery Service). We were addrssed as "Mr. Go! - Go!" Th envelope contained a pair of well-worn white socks with newspaper clippings attached. We treasure the thought so much that the whole mess is hung on the wall where we can see it from our desk.
