AMERICAN LEGION NINE ENJOYS SUCCESSFUL SEASON; FIRST IN LEAGUE AMD TURD IN PLAYOFF by Ron Smith The McHenry American Legion Team enjoyed its third straight successful season this year as it finished with an 11-4 overall record. The new coaches, Jack Thomas and his assistant, Jack Vick, pick up where Tom Bolger left off in guiding the team to its second straight season championship of McHenry County. Other teams included Crystal Lake, Harvard, Algonquin, Johnsburg, Cary, Woodstock, and Marengo. The season looks even more successful as we lost such stars as Gene Freund, Denny Litwin. Don Bentz, Bob Meyers, and Roger Benson, -- all regulars from last year's team. The only returning regulars from last year were Jack Schaefer, Ron Smith, Jim Justen and John Moss. He held the distinction of striking %ut only twice all season. Ron Smith played errorless ball in centerfield for the second straight year. Ron led the team in batting with a .419 average, in hits (18), and tied Tor the fielding average lead with 1.000. He placed second in home runs (1) stolen bases (8), and runs batted in with 13. He also, with Schaefer, struck out only twice all year. Jim Justen played a good first base and led the team in triples 3 and putouts 79. He placed second in runs batted in with 13. Jim's hitting got better and better with each passing game. He also placed second in hits with 17. Ron Creutz played good ball in his first year of full-time catching. Ron placed second in doubles, 2; walks, 11; strikeouts, 11; and putouts, 74. His hitting was very consistent throughout the year. John Moss was used in leftfield and at catching. He played excellent defensive ball at both positions. John led the team in doubles with 6. He had j no close competition in this department. He was second in runs 15 and walks 11. John Gates, tied for the. fielding lead with a" perfect 1.000 pet. Right field was new to John, but he played it very good for his first year. He also turned in fine defensive ball at third. John was another consistent .300 hitter. Tom Roti made the switch from third to second in fine style. He led the team in sacrifice hits with 4. lie was second in triples, 2 and assists, 26. Joe Sanford played fine ball at third in his first Legion season. Joe placed second in home runs with 1 and led the team in strikeouts with 20. He has a good start and should enjoy severial more fine years. Terry Bradley hit an excellent .412 but did not bat enough times to qualify for the average lead. Terry was unfortunate in that he could not make weekday games and this undoubtedly hurt him, but the team welcomed his presence at all Sunday games. Tom Claybaugh struck out 48, walked 45, and had a wonlost mark of 9-3. His earned run average was a very respectable 2.71. He also had the unusual distinction of leading the team in assists. Butch Aguirre struck out 20, walked 29, had a 2-1 record, and held era of 3.63. He pitched good ball for a newcomer and should also benefit from this year's experience. Special credit should also go to Mickey Schaefer, Mike Lew, Jim Peterson, and Fred Clarey for filling in capably when needed. Mickey also did an excellent job of keeping all these statistics. This year Federal regulations pertaining to doves have changed a bit. The dove season runs from September 1 to November 4. We now have 65 days of dove shooting. There is just one catch. From opening day to the last day, shooting hours are from 1 p. m. daylight time to sunset, or 12 noon standard time to sunset. The daily limit is 10 and possession limit is doubled-- up to 20--after the first day. Our Conservation Department reports indications of a tremendous dove population. Census reports from neighboring states in which <dove hunting is not permitted show pojiulations are smaller than ours in Illinois. The McHenry Sportsmans Club has equipped itself with lights for night trap shooting. These night* shoots are held every Friday from 8 until 10 p.m. They also hold a practice shoot every Sunday from „ 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Some of us get pretty rusty and a few rounds of trap can help sharpen up the eye for this coming fall.
