Unless we drivers are more careful/than we were last year, 81 of those kids won't live long enough to know the joy of another summer holiday. That's how many Illinois youngsters between the ages of 5 and 14 were killed last year in pedestrian and bicycle accidents. Another ' 3,109 youngsters in that age group were injured, some of- them maimed for life, in the same type of accidents. The heedless and carefree actions of many child traffic victims thrust them into dangerous situations. But even in such cases, we adults must accept the blame when we injure or kill a child. By their very nature, children are excitable, heedless and unthinking. We, as adults, know this.. Yet somehow, we expect every child to realize instantly that an automobile is a lethal weapon if he strays into its path. Somehow, we expect the child to know more about speed and stopping distance than the driver. « HW often have the griefstricken parents of a struekdown child heard the excuse "I couldnstop in tim£" or "I didn't see'"hino soon enough?" Any driver who has killed or maimed a child knows the "ifs" that are on his conscience for the rest of his life: "Jf I had been going a little slower", "if I had been just a little more alert", "if , . . . " It's time for all drivers to face up to their full responsibility for our shamefully high child pedestrian toll. It's time for all drivers to adjust their driving, to increase their alertness when driving in any area when children may be walking or playing. Especially during this month when children are going back to school, it's time for all drivers to keep a sharp lookout for children--to protect from their heedless behavic And it is past the time when, every parent should teach his child about the dangers of traffia Our deplorable child tragic victim toll can be reduced. But it will take the combined effort of every motorists a&ll parent in the state. Parents must • teach their children about traffic hazards. Motorists must exercise extra caution when driving where children play. TRAFFIC TOLL DOWN ^ A nine-year low in AugUSt traffic fatalities in Illinois vt&s recorded when 167 persons died in traffic accidents, the Illinois Division of Traffic Safety said last week.
