THE McrtmRY PLAlNDEArER ? The Driver's Seat ' Almost a million'teen-agers each year ar$ learning automobile driving in special high school driver training courses. - Mass 'teen-age driver training is an impressive and effective activity that slowly is reducing the number of accidents and deaths on our highways, according to safety studies. Glance at "Sportsmanlike Driving," the most widely u$ed text in the nation's schools, and you'll find that hundreds of thousands of youngsters are learning about motoring. Look at "Let's Drive Right," Mapcwell Halsey's book, and you'll see what another large number of students will learn this year. However, if you look closely enough you may find that a lot <qf important things are missing from driver training books. There is little being taught today about turnpike driving or driving in darkness or fog. A For example, "Sportsmanlike -Driving" has only seven i n c i d e n t a l r e f e r e n c e s a b o u t night driving in 473 pages. "Let's Drive Right" -- 473 pages--has fourteen brief, brief relent ions of the special problems of driving at night. ; This is thesituation despite the fact that-most accidents happen during the hours of darkness. According to the National Safety Council, 54 per cent of all fatalities occurred during darkness last year, although there is only about half as much traffic on the (.roads at night. | Similarly, turnpike driving is not given much attention in these two text. The reason, of course, is that turnpike driving is a relatively recent develi opment. Only lately have safei tv officials begun to recog- | nize the special, dangers of ! night driving. So it might^be worth checking the manual being used in ' your 'teen-ager's -driver trairij ing course. Does it teach him J or "her to drive at night? On i turnpikes? In fog? If not, take the time to point out to ; your youngster, these special ! hazards.1 | Pful Kearney's "How to j Drive' the Turnpikes and Suri vive" points out the dangers of j driving on high-speed roads. J "The Nighttime Accident Probj. lem" by Phil Hirsch, shows some of the problems of night [driving. i You can be sure that your I youngster will spend a lot of ! his time driving turnpikes, I once he gets his license. And it's a good bet 'that he ^will do some of his earliest and fanciest driving at night--probably the first Saturday night after he gets the keys to the family car.
