A retired Army major, he was a member of the American Legion post at Wonder Lake and the Veterans of Foreign Wars post at McHenry. The deceased was born June 26, 1888, in Reiger, Batavia, Europe. For the past twenty years he had resided at Wonder Lake. SutVivors are the widow, Helen; three sons, John and Victor of Wonder Lake and Robert of Miami. Fla. The body rested at the George R. Justen & Son funeral home, until Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, when Mass was read at Christ the King church, Wonder Lake, by Rev. Fr. James Vanderpool. Burial was in the church cemetery. Sherman C. Davis Sherman C. Davis, 93, of Round Lake died at his home Nov. 22. He was a retired dairy farmer. He is survived by a son, Ray C., and two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Russell of Volo and Mrs. Ed Bacon of Round Lake. The body rested at the Davis home until 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, when rites were held there, with Rev. Ralph Smith of Waukegan officiating. Burial was in the Wauconda cemetery. Adams son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Adams of 414 Court street, McHenry, completed four weeks of individual combat training Nov. 12 at the Marine corps base, Camp Pendelton, C^lif. As a result of the second breaking out of the dreaded disease of influenza at Dundee, all of the public places, including schools, churches, theatres, pool and billard halls and saloons have been ordered closed. Thursday noon the thermometer registered twenty degrees above zero, Friday morning the mercury registered two to four degrees below. For alleged inpatriotic remarks. Bud Becker, a barber of Chemung, was placed in a barrel and given a wheelbarrow ride around town. After the ride he was made to kiss and salute the American flag, and then was forced to tear a German flag he had in his possession into small strips and stamp it into the ground. ^ Mr. and Mrs. Michael Freund' were overjoyed this weeftN to receive a letter from their son, Pvt. Henry Freund, stating he was alive and getting along fine. Pvt. Freund, on active service overseas, had previously been reported missing. Corp. Harry Vasey, 23, of Oak Park, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Vasey and grandson of Mrs. Mary Waite of this city, was killed in action in France Nov. 3, just a week before the armistice was signed. cago, Monday. Business men and representatives from the various organizations of the city met at the Legion hall Monday evening to form a local relief association to take care of the needy for the coming winter. Officers elected were Mrs. Albert' Purvey, president; Mrs. Albert Krause, vice-president; and Peter M. Justen, secretary. Miss Florence Freund, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Freund. and Joseph Britz, son of Mr, and Mrs. William Britz of Fox Lake, were married at St. Mary's church here Nov. 25. Announcement has been made of the marriage of Warren Holly. son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Holly, to Miss Mildred Mann of Chicago, which took place in a double wedding with their chums in Chicago, Sept. 2. TEN YEARS AGO From issue of Nov. 25, 1948 Mr. and Mrs. Ben Brefeld, old time residents of this city, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, with a family gathering at their home on Washington and Gre^p strefet on Nov. 22. Mrs. Pauline Selzer, ,66, mother of Mrs. Rose Mary Weingart of this city, passed away at her home in Crystal Ljake Friday, Nov. 19. ; The Vasey school, east of Volo, which, served about fourteen farm children of the area, was destroyed by fire Monday night. McHenry friends have received announcement of the marriage of Miss Nancy Roth Younger, daughter of Mrs. Charles Younger of Champaign, and Mr. Charles Edwin Martin, son of the Clinton E. Martins of West McHenry, which took place in the First Methodist church, Champaign, Saturday evening, Nov. 20. Two were referred to the board of appeals. Supervisors approved the request of Casimir and Harriette Pociaska for reclassification from residential to business land at Griswold Lake. A tavern and picnic grounds are located on the property, which adjoins an area where boat rentals and launching facilities are available. Arthur G. Schroeder's request for a re - classification from farming to residential a parcel of land on the southwest corner of Wonder Lake was .approved. A petition to construct a clubhouse for a private hunting and fishing group on property southeast of Wonder Lake was approved. The request was made by P. M. Berry, Arthur G. Schroeder and Ida F. Schroeder. McHenry Man Hurt r In Auto Accident An accident in the Burtori^s Bridge area last week caused the hospitalization of A. E. Nugent of Rt. 3, McHenry.,Nugent was reported travelling east on River road and lost control of his car. After missing a telephone pole and a tree, the car stopped when it crashed into a house. Mrs. Catherine Staroske and her 2-yearK)ld son were in the house but were not injured. Nugent, who was reported released from the hospital just three days before the accident, received minor injuries.
