Cable Jr., 626 Parkview West, McHenry, completed the field c o m m u n i c a t i o n s c r e w m a n course April 23 at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. ^ Cable was trained to provide units with telephone, teletype and other communication services. He entered the Army last November and received basic i training at the fort. The 18-year-old soldier is a 1958 graduate of McHenry Community high school. MEDITERRANEAN -- William G. Houck, seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. Houck, is serving aboard the tank landing ship USS Talbot County, operating as a unit of the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. The ship joined j the fleet in early May. ,<s,| POHANG, Korea -- Marine j Acting Cpl. Gary Krumweide, i son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry C. I Krumweide of Route 6, McHenry, is serving with the | Third Marine division which j took part in "Operation Sea! Turtle", April 27 to 30, at Pohang, Korea. "Sea Turtle" wa£ the largest combined U.S. and Republic ofltorea amphibious exercise, ever staged. A $500 scholarship fund to train another teacher for the educable mentally handicapped children of McHenry county has been set up by the McHenry County Federation of Women's Clubs. Special education courses to train a teacher for this classroom require two summer sessions costing $250 each. The project originated in April of 1957, under the guidance of Mrs. Walter P. Howard of Crystal Lake, who was president of the county federation at that time. Mrs. F. Vaughn Jones of McHenry was named chairman of a special project to raise funds to help handicapped children. Each local unit of women's clubs in the (^unty has been carrying on special fund raising projects to provide the $250 scholarship money needed for the second year of teacher training. The Illinois Council for Mentally Retarded Children had have its seventh annual state convention in Springfield May 1 and 2. Attending from McHenry county were Mrs. Dale Healless and Mrs. Harry Davidson, secretary and treasurer of the McHenry County Association for Retarded Children. They went in a chartered airplane, through the courtesy of Arthur T. Gait, Jr., for the Friday afternoon session. The McHenry county parent group organized in October, 1958, and invites parents and friends of the mentally retarded to join with them in their drive to overcome the problems of acceptance of the retarded, and to keep informed on current developments in education, health, welfare and legislation relating to this group. Anyone interested in learning more about the organization may contact Francis Higgins, Wonder Lake, president of the association. FIND STOLEN BIKES ' Hidden under a bridge on Rt. 12, at the entrance to Pistakee Highlands were five bicycles in various stages of dismantling, found last week by Mrs. Martin Rogde, a resident of the area. The sheriff's office last month recovered several bikes taken in the vicinity and three were returned to their owners. Receives Cap MILK DAY Announcement was made this week by Mayor Ronald Morris of Harvard that the city's eighteenth annual Milk Day celebration will be held Saturday, June 6. The mayors' milking contest, delayed a year because of rain in 1958, will occur at 11 o'clock in the morning, with finalists vying for the crown of champion milker during the afternoon festivities. I TWO MILES EAST OF THE OUTDOOR THEATRE Miss Mary Lynn Murphy, recipient of the V.F.W. auxiliary nurse scholarship last year, was capped at Wesley Memorial recently. She has also received another scholarship since entering training. Attending the ceremony were Mrs. Evelyn Murphy, Kathy, Sally and Larry, and Mrs. George Barbian. Henn and Celia Wirtz of McHenry. HARVARD HOSPITAL Debbie Warnes of McHenry and Deborah Gosse of Wonder Lake were patient# at Harvard hosiptal during the past week. HURT IN ACCIDENT William Lenz, of the Island Lake community suffered a concussion and lacerations as the result of an accideht on Rt. 176 Friday evening. He has been a patient in McHenry hospital. Also injured, but less seriously, was Robert Nellis, 17, of Island Lake. Their car went out of control and overturned as they were driving west. Never take the condition of your car's brakes for granted. Even on newer cars brakes sometimes fail suddenly. If this happens, try pumping your brake with short, quick applications of the pedal. Stop off the roadway and send for a repairman. To avoid trouble have your brakes checked at regular intervals. Deanery Holds Open Meeting On Wednesday evening, May 6, the McHenry Deanery Council of Catholic Women held an open meeting. All Catholic women of the McHenry d<^iery were invited to attend. Wie meeting took place at St. Margaret Mary rectory hall in Algonquin, with benediction at 7:45 p.m., followed by the meeting at approximately 8 p.m. Mrs. R. G. McNeese, president of the Altar and Rosary society of St. Margaret Mary, will be hostess for the evening. m ' Bake Sale . The McHenry deanery bake sale held recently in McHenry by the women of St. Mary's parish was a huge success. Proceeds of the sale will be turned over to Father Hubert McGinn for the Newman Foundation at the Northern Illinois university in DeKalb. April 16. Institute The McHenry deanery ii%itute held on April 16 at Christ the King parish in Wonder Lake is now a past event but will be remembered by many wno attended as a very interesting and educational day. Miss Nora LeTourneau, field secretary of the National Council of Catholic Women, was guest speaker. Catholic women came from far and near to hear her. Miss RegRLa O'Connell of Chicago, executive secretary of the Chicago Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, was present. Their guests were from Sterling, DeKalb, Hebron and Aurora. Father Alfred Kruk, assistant at St. Peter's church of Spring Grove, donated a book entitled "The Life of St. Elizabeth of Hungary". ^ Mrs. John Gustek, president of the Altar and Rosary at Christ the King church in Wonder Lake, and members served coffee and cake to all attending the institute. Miss LeTourneau was called for by Mrs. Raymond Lyons, president of the Aurora deanery, where she will conduct another institute for the Aurora deanery. ^ To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart.
