Wednesday, July 1, 1959 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Page Nine McCullom Lake Jos. Cermaks Wed Fifty Years Eye Levesqae lr. and Mr% Joseph Cermak qf Park View West, who were among the early settlers of McCullom Lake, marked fifty years of joys and sorrows on Sunday, June 28. For the occasion, their daughter and sonin- faw, Lillian and Bob Klicka, held "open house" at their home in Hinsdale for the couple. Happy to assist with the fe^ivities were their other d^khter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Checker and son »nd wife, Mr. and Mrs. Joe ]£ermak, Jr. Between seventy-five and 100 friends, relatives and neighbors came to help them celebrate. It was a memorable event and one they will long remember. Next-door neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Poledna and Mr. arfp Mrs. Vincent Berry, held their own surprise party for the Cermaks on Wednesday night. Elest wishes to the happy couple as they enter their second fifty years! Notes on Local Government r At the last meeting of the trustees and president on Monday, June 22, road commissioner Don Parenti notified the bdjlrd that the proposed road work, that is, sealing and patching of specified streets, may be started as early as next week. Ordinance No. 37--disturbing the peace--was passed unanimously by the trustees by a voice vote. This meeting was recessed until Monday, June 29, for the purpose of passing the annual levy. Teen Talk The young people of the community held a meeting on Tuesday, June 23. in the beachhouse and at this time they voted- to •hold a beach party on Saturday, July 11. An invitation has been extended to the Lakeland Park 'Teen club and an acceptance is expected in the near fi^j'ire. The hours will be from noon until 5 p.m., which will give the gals 'n' guys plenty of time to groom themselves for the dance at 7:30 that night. This should be a wonderful day of fellowship for the lads and lasses. Their meeting night has been established as the first and third Tuesday of each month commencing with July 7. Active to the Last Moment Mrs. Alma Ladig, 64, of Ft. Wayne, Ind., went to her demise in a most unusual but merciful way. Mrs. Ladig was Elma Nelson's youngest aunt. While fishing with her son and his gal pal, the woman hooked into a 10 or 15 lb. muskie. She became so excited, she tipped the bo^t over and was presumed drowned. Her son recovered his mother's body but was unable to revive her. According to the autopsy report, there was absence of water in the lungs and they therefore attributed death to a heart attack! It was revealed that she was probably gone before she enteredvjthe water. According to Elma, her aunt was an active sportswoman all her life, and this story proves it! ' Mr. and Mrs.. Earl Nelson left our shores on , Tuesday morning of last week to attend the services which were held in Ft. Wayne on Wednesday. Mrs. Ladig is survived by two sons, Gordon and Ray. must accompany each registration blank. * This promises to be a memorable day at McCullom Lake. Festival Plans in High Gear In addition to the crowning of Miss McCullom Lake and the buggy parade, more activities have been added to the agenda for the festival. There will be a bike parade for boys, in the afternoon. The lads may register with Louise Hammerstein, who is handling this event. Merchandise for the "white elephant" sale may be turned in at the Zody residence on Park View West. Any articles of twenty-five cent value or more is desired--unwrapped! Through the voice of their president, Melinda Scarbrough, the 'teen-agers have consented to pick up staple groceries such as canned goods or other nonperishable items to be used in filling grocery baskets. The young ladies and men will begin soliciting the village on Monday, July 6. Can they count on your donation? The girls and fellows also plan to nan a "tasty pastry" booth during the festival. In error, credit was given to Bill Reid for handling the lighting system. The one who should get credit is his pop, "Senator" Dave Reid. Real Sorry. Registration for Miss McCullom Lake entrants--li'I gals 4 through 9-- will begin on Wednesday, July 1, and blanks may be obtained at Lottie and Gene's grocery. A fifty-cent fee "Kiddie Garden" | One of the most novel ideas we have heard about in a long | time for keeping the small fry | occupied during vacation is the i "kiddie garden" classes held at the Reid residence on Spring road. The "brain trust" or teachers include Joanne Reid, Nancy Burg and Nancy Reid-- all pre-'teeners themselves. I The girls have quite a large ! attendance which includes jjanie and Tommy Frost, Margie Olsen, Johnny Ringelstetter, Lorene (Susie) and Dorene (DG) Vycital and Jack Morris. We understand the little ones really must "toe the mark" or they face being expelled. Cute, huh? Cullom-Knoll Safety at the beach and in the water is being stressed by the Cullom-Knoll association. Several ideas along those lines will be discussed at the meeting to be held Thursday, July 2 at 8 p.m. in the beach- : house. Anyone who is really j interested in doing something ; constructive may join the club I for the small sum of six dol- ; lars per annum. If interested, call Bill Walter at 2639, or better yet--attend the meeting! i Vacation Bible School j Five members of the "bike ' 'n' trike" set were "graduated" : with honors from the vacation Bible school held at Nativity | L u t h e r a n c h u r c h , W o n d e r i Lake, on Friday evening. They I were Bruce and Roger Thackj er, Alberta and Roberta Fox I and D. D. Levesque. With only (one exception, all the youngj sters received awards for peri feet attendance for the twoj week period. j A fitting verbal tribute ; should8 be awarded to the Rev. i Rurt Schroeder and his wonderful staff of teachers who are doing such a splendid job in the face of many obstacles. This was the largest class ever held with a total enrollment of 149 students! Adolescent Gathering Susan Murray gathered together the fellas and girls that she chums with, and treated them to a beach party last Wednesday. Most of them were classmates from Junior, high. Those present included Cindy Tomasello, Judy Murray, Debbie Block, Nancy West, Susan P r a w 1. Marcie Christiansen, Joan O'Halloran, John Rourke, Chuck Miller, and Tom (?). A final check by the State Toll Road commission revealed only four "reportable" accidents. Three involved property damage while the other resulted in one minor personal injury.
