Page Four THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, July. 9, 1959 Bill Ahrens walked in with afellow about 6' 2" and caught us by complete surprise. The big fellow was his brother, Henry, whom we hadn't seen in some 37 years. A lot of water carried down Fox River in that spell of time so maybe both "Hank" and I have changed a bit. Henry grew up on McIIenry's west side, then followed the advice of the gold rush days to "Go West, Young Man - Go West". He landed in California and hasn't been back here. Says he started back hero when in the U.S. Navy, but lost his carfare in a poker game and never did get started .again. We enjoyed the visit aind a sense of humor that hasn't dulled a bit down the years. It may seem early to talk of the next bowling season in Mc- Jlenry, but hear tell that Betty Gende will operate the Palace. Carl and Hans Behnke made ! many friends and operated the Palace in a creditable manner. We wish Betty the same . success in her now business venture. A1 Fritz, who reports your Softball news each week in nice fashion, tells us there will be a benefit game Saturday night - proceeds to go toward a worthy cause. Read Al's review this week for future de- ' tails. If you haven't been watch- \ ing the soft ball games at the t V.F.W. diamond, you have • missed some fun. Saturday j night woudl be a good time to i be there. XO HITTER -- Edward Stacknick gave Pony L e a g u e f a n s , p l a y e r s a n d coaches a real thrill Sunday as he pitched a no-hit, no-run game for the Giants. That's quite a trick in any league and something to be very proud of since it seldom happens even once in a lifetime. « BLACKHAWK DAY -- *<• Next Sunday afternoon at about 4:30 o'clock the Mc- » Henry Blackhawks will have * their day at the city baseball diamond. You may not know the u Blackhawks are a baseball n»,team made up of Pony League "•» grads. If you read the reports X each week, you will know they - are the winningest team in the whole area. This team took form last winter when Pete DeCicco, * Louis Swedo and Lawrence «* Klapperich decided to get " something started for the boys _Joo old for Pony League, and too young for other groups. * They are well outfitted, thanks 4 to several sponsors who will - be on hand next Sunday for * this special event. a Len Keller. President of the ; North Suburban league, Mayor .. George P. Freund and other leaders will be present. As a special attraction, the Ameri- , can Legion will send their youngsters in the Drum and ' Bugle Corps. w Local TV business firms * promised to have the P.A. system in readiness as their part • in making the day a success. Remember. It's next Sunday. ~ We would like to acknowledge all phone calls informing us that the National League "won the All-Star Game. Our ronly explanation is that Casey Stengel had too few White *Sox players in his lineup. £DAILY PINUPS It's been said "there's nothring new under the sun" but ^plenty of fireworks have been *heard under the moon. * £ A philanthropist is a person fcwho practices what he preaches, "where there's a will, ^there's a way.
