TIGERS RETURN WITH 15-4 WIN OVER STATEVILLE Box Score Johnsburg's- Tigers traveled to Joli^t last Saturday to play their annual game with the prison team in Joliet Stateville penitentiary. The Tigers won 15-4 as the game was called due to a 2:30 p.m. curfew after 6 Ms innings of play. Dick Hiller's bat provided the most thrills for the crowd of approximately 2.000 prisoners. The Bengal rightfielder had a homer, triple, and single in four trips. to the plate. Both extra base hits traveled more than 385 feet into centerfield. He made Quite an impression as the Stateville pitcher gave him an intentional walk his last time up. Loren Freund pitched all six innings for the Tigers, giving up 6 hits while striking out 5 and walking only 2. The trp itself is just as interesting as the ball game could possibly be. We arrived around 9:30 a.m. and then were taken on a tour of the institution. It is truly amazing and unbelievable how the prison serves as an excellent rehabilitation center for the inmates. Among the interesting things we were shown were the following: Stateville high school, vocational school, barber school, furniture and upholstery shop, a soap factory, a grocery store, and finally, their own textile mill. Stateville is a town initself and the landscaping would match or beat any college campus in the land. After this fairly extensive tour, we were treated to a fine dinner and then at noon, the umpires gave the official call to "play ball". Actually, the diamond was in as good condition as any we haw played on all year. The trip was certainly one of the highlights of the entire year, and the decisive victory only aided in making it more enjoyable. Little League The major league race is going down to the wire with the Falcons holding a half game lead over the Owls. The regular schedule will be completed this week. In .the event of a tie a play-off will be held next Sunday at 3:00 p.m. If the race has been settled an All-Star game will be' held Sunday, so in any event there will be a big game Sunday following the Minor League All-Star game. Dave Smith homered to pace the Eagles to an 8-7 win over the Bluebirds. Dick Doherty turned pitcher as the Owls trimmed the Eagles 17-7 with Ken Frost getting his fifth homer. Tom Bolger broke up a promising Eagle rally by throwing a runner out at third base from his/right field position. - Buddy Rogers dtove in the winning rjin in an extra inning game and Neal Gute homered as the Cardinals nipped the Orioles 6-5. Mike Pitzen made a great diving catch, to rob Bud Stilling of a hit. Denny Jackson hit a three run homer for all the Falcon's runs as the league leaders squeezed past the Bluebirds. 3-2. Bob Schaefer made a good catch in center field and doubled the tying run at the plate to end the game. Ron Parks pitched steady ball and survived homers by Gary Anderson and Paul Adams, his fifth, as the Owls beat the Orioles 6-4. In the week's final game the Bluebirds beat the Cards 15-7. in the refreshment stand, to help provide funds for next years' teams, and to all the men who have managed and coached this year, and given so much of their time and energy to provide a summer of good sportsmanship and fun for our boys, by packing the stands at the VFW for these three full six inning, All-Star games. ^ GAME TIMES Friday, Aug. 19 -- 7 p.m. Satiyrday, Aug. 20 -- 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21 -- 1 p.m. Box Score Quality is no accident; quantity isn't always an asset. First and second low net winners for the day are: Class A, Marilyn Reihansperger 76; Helen Miller, 77. Class B, Isabel Cook, 74; Lil Burns, 78. Class C, Ilavern Gregory 78; Pearl Miller, 81. With Hullabaloo Day intervening next Tuesday, the club championship play will continue on Aug. 30. After three rounds, Dee Overton is leading the field with a 291-scratch. Much credit has been given to the low- net winners over the past weeks. Let me just mention that some beautifully conr sistent rounds of golf are being shot by the girls in the championship flight -- these low gross totals (around 300 for 54 holes) are not shot by wishful thinking. A small mention to all hus- 'bands and wives, or let it be a reminder, about the Blessed Event Friday, Aug. 19, and a big reminder to all members, friends and guests, about HULLABALOO, Aug. 23rd.
