Both teams scored one run in each of the third and fourth innings. Dundee added another njn in the fifth as McHenry failed to score. Both teams were scoreless in the sixth, but each scored two runs in the seventh. Dundee scored their two runs on a homer by Mowen. The Warriors made a futile attempt to regain the lead and the game, but fell one run short. With two out the Warriors loaded the bases with three walks. He holds the present mark set last year of 52.1. In the mile, Rick Lolly of Crystal Lake has done far below the present record of 4:40.6 on numerous occasions. Bill Smith of Pala tine, who placed third in the State last year in the Discus, has thrown 160 feet, 13 feet beyond the present conference record. As the venders at a ball game shout out their merchandise, such as "You can't tell the ball players without a score card", one match proved that you are not sure if you have won or lost if you don't have a rule book in your bag. The match was all even at the end of 10 holes. Tom Evans vs. Pete Mayer, Evans' second shot on the eleventh hole was stuck in the bushes making his ball unplayable. Evans removed his ball and dropped it behind the bushes and made a fine recovery shot to the green. Pete's second shot was ten yards over the green. He chipped up within 6 fd&t of the pin. Pete then asked Tom, "how many do you lie?" After talking it over with the balance of their foursome, and also the foursome on the 13th green, it was agreed that an unplayable lie was a two stroke penalty. He putted inches short of the hole and tapped in his ball for a five, winning the hole and again the match was tied. They played the balance of their match and were still all even. As they started back to the first hole for a sudden death play-off, Pete said "let's go into the Pro shop and make sure how many strokes for an unplayable lie". To our amazement, the rule had been changed in the 1961 rule book from two stroke penalty to a one stroke penalty. Tom won the match instead of having a 6 on the eleventh hole, he had a 5, halving the hole. The second-guessing then went on in our lounge. Would Pete have gone for the hole and made a four and then what would have happened in the sudden death play off? Who knows? 100 percent of the members in the lounge thought that 2 strokes were correct. The moral of the above is to get yourself a 1961 U.S.G. rule book. VARSITY GOLFERS tSsfe TO ELGIN AND BARRINGTON Last Tuesday the McHenry golf team travelled to Elgin only to lose 7-3. The match was called at the end of 12 holes because of darkness. At this point Gary Adams lost 58- 56, Bob Vaupell lost 63-62, Bob Beckenbaugh lost 59-58, JohnN Rourke won 63-55 and Ted Hornby lost 63-62. Gary Adams and Bob Vaupell played 16 holes and both were winning, but because of darkness, the score had to be referred back to the 12th hole. Thursday, May 4, Barrington came to McHenry and won 13-2. The only winner was Bob Beckenbaugh with a 79-83 win. Other scores were Gary Adams 81, Bob Vaupell 83, John Rourke 94 and Ted Hornby 103. Barrington is building one of its strongest teams in years and hopes to win the Arlington District. This weekend the McHenry team will travel to Waukegan for the District. The boys should be in top form for this match. Gary Adams, John Rourke and Bob Beckenbaugh have gone to the Bonnie Brook golf course to become familiar with the course. At Elgin in a nine hole match, the Sophomores beat Elgin 6-4. Jay Sayler lost 55- 43, Chris Newkirk won 50-52, Bill Funk won 45-48. Rich Johnson won 55-60 and Bill Jorgenson lost 55-49. (Shamrocks Win League Opener From Elgin 14-8 Sunday, the McHemy Shamrocks opened their county league play with a 14-8 win over Elgin. The pitching star of the game was Roger Tinder with a no run, one. hit, relief job for Jack Adams in the final three innings. The batting stars of the game were Chuck Pierce, Gene Freund and Don Bentz. Roger Tinder drove in three runs while Roger Benson also drove in three runs with a three run homer. Chuck Pierce led our sixteen hit attack with four hits, including a homer, double and two singles. Gene Freund and Don Bentz each collected three hits while Roger Tinder and Roger Benson had two hits each. When the first of eighteen weekly sessions ended, Tony Victor's team was in first place, followed by three teams tied for second place. These teams are headed by Wally Golofit, A1 Godina and Harold Lennon.
