Wasn't it great when the government lived within its income -- and ours?? In boat in-;, as Jn almost every other activity, the minoi details to which we normally give little thought can be the difference between a pleasant cruise or an unpleasant experience. For instance, I sometimes have trouble remembering that my outboard boat doesn't steer like an automobile, which foljgws the front wheels. In boats the stern responds to the steering jmpulse first, and in the opposite direction from that which the bow is going to take. So when in close quarters, it's always a good idea to give your stern room enough to swing when you turn. Like everyone, I've been embarrassed several times by launching my boat minus the drain plug. It's a good idea to Possibly you've never dropped your ignition key overboard. But this can become downright discouraging if it happens. Naturally you should always carry a spare key but it's also a good suggestion to attach a small fishing bobber or other floating device to the key that your normally use so that it will not sink if accidentally dropped overboard. If you're boating on a lake filled with weed beds, we suggest that you stop periodically and clear your propeller completely of weeds by reversing the motor and accelerating briefly. You'll be able to tell if there are weeds on your propeller because N the motor will vibrate excessively when you accelerate. For peace o? mind, it's a good idea to have your boating rig fully insured against theft, accident or liability. Check your automobile insurance policy to make sure you are covered when pulling a boat trailer. In some cases, home owners' insurance policies might offer partial coverage with your insurance agent to find out 'to what 'extent. Happy Boating. The Drivers Seat leaving home rather than at j the launching site where you will likely be in a hurry and i occupied with other things. If you do take water aboard when launching accelerate your boat to a comfortable planing speed. Then remove the drain plug and accumulated water will drain out rapidly. We change national politics now ;tnd then, so that we can have a new group to point with pride and to view with alarm. In these days of multi-billion dollar government budgets, the spending of 2?1'5 000 by a public official normally would pass unnoticed. But when n public official spends $25,000 so wisely that it results in a- saving to the taxpayers of more than $400.- 000 in one year, the story merits a fanfare of trumpets to call it to the attention of every custodian of public funds in the land. Such an investment was made in Polk county. Iowa, when State Highway Commissioner J. W. Statton a year ago ordered distribution of a limited number of special reflective license plates to determine their value in preventing accidents. These plates are made with a material thnt glows brightly in the beams of automobile headlights at night and can be seen from as far away as 2.500 feet. Even if a car is parked on a road shoulder with its taillights out at night, the license plates help make it visible to cars approaching from the rear. The ^ear tnd report of the Polk county experiment indicated the "safety" license plates were so effective in preventing rear-end collisions at night that citizens of the county saved more than $400,000 that normally would have been the sosts of these accidcnls. The plates were particularlyeffective in reducing the number of rear-end collisions involving parked or stalled cars at night. So successful was the Polk county test that Commissionei Statton has recommended the adoption of reflective license plates by the entire state. It's an idea that might be considered by public officials in other states. REVOKE DRIVER LICENSES OF TWO THIS PAST WEEK The state has announced the revocation of the driver license of Fred Westphal of Crystal Lake and Harold E. Boiigh and William Fischer of McHenry; Samuel Fry of Island Lake; Robert Gavers of Woodstock; Donald Hayes of McCullom Lake; Leslie Hansen of Algonquin; Phillip Sineni of Wonder Lake and Thomas Weinmann of Spring Grove.
