We said "So Long" to our friends in the press coop Friday night at the football field and started thinking about the basketball season which opens Nov. 17th at Grant High School. We had just witnessed the final football game of the season as the Warriors wrapped up an undefeated season by beating Dundee. And quite a job it was to beat that Dundee team. George Cina was on the job with his movie camera, as he was all season, and we look forward to seeing some of those action shots. Talk about shotgun football. George had his camera mounted on a shotgun stock. Ready, aim, fire! Assistant Coach Don Seaton, the man with the phone in the coop, really called the shots Friday night in seeing things that most of us missed. Never saw a nicer smile than Mrs. Mandli's as she was presented with a bouquet of roses after the game. A gracious, happy lady had just seen the end of a strenuous season. Coaches' wives are the most loyal persons on earth. Ray Franklin was plenty sharp as a spotter for ^ the Brickhouse of the press box, Jack Vick. Penalties and a wet field kept the score down Friday night. The officials confused us some, but all in all it was real cozy in the press box where we had some of the comforts of home such as a plate to brew up some coffee. And, to one friend of long standing, Joe Schmitt, thanks again. Those steps to the coop helped a lot. We would like to be sure you read Ernie Useman's review of the season. Ernie covered all the games for us and really covered .every play. We tried, but couldn't hold him down on space. He worked too hard -- a go^: faii&. . Coaches Mandli, Hutchinson and Seaton were riding high after the game -- high op the shoulders of husky players who hoisted their coaches to their shoulders and trotted off the field. WARRIORS WRAP UP UNDEFEATED FOOTBAUfEAR Down Dundee Cards 14-6 Before Home Fans Friday Nighi\ By Ernie Useman Wrapping up the most successful and well deserved season of any team in McHenry high school history, the Warriors remained undefeated Friday night by edging Dundee 14-6 before feet-stomping fans on a cold and wet McCracken Field. If the heat of battle could have warmed the playing area, undoubtedly steam would still be rising from the turf, as a very determined Cardinal squad showed it was not going to let McHenry bow out with ease. But 34 men and 3 coaches were only one game from a near-ideal record, and it was going to take more than Dundee to burst their balloon and mar the first McHenry; title claim. The Warrior scoring lights first lit 8 minutes after kickoff following an exchange of punts. With 3rd and 5 on the Dundee 42, the quick but usually short gaining pass over center from DeCicco to Fletcher exploded into a 6 pointer. The Warrior left end angled toward the opposite goal corner, snagged the pass shoulder high on the 30, and outran or highstepped 4 defenders for his second T.D. of the year. Faunt's valuable toe added the Tth point. Just 2 plays after the only Dundee score, Morenz brought the Warrior scoring total to 13 on his longest run of the season. Using the seasonally successfull off tackle slant, the McHenry co-captain cut back behind the defensive line and galloped 79 yds. with a 4 man Warrior escort close behind. With 2:28 left in the 3rd period, Faunt annexed his last of 13 extra points for the year. What appeared to be another famous Warrior break away T.D. came 6 minutes before game's end. As Morenz was being thrown for a 5 yd. loss on the Dundee 45, the fullback lateralled to R. Freund who reversed field picking up Cardinal cutting blocks, and dashed 30 yds. before slipping on the 15. But an illeg&l use of hands penalty was claimed to have occurred at the onset of the gain, and the Warriors were set back to their own 35. With the running-throwing threat ot Dundee's Gary Peters leading the Cardinals, their 3rd in conference scoring offense tested Paul Mandli's defense probably as much or more than any other team. In fact, if Dundee had more able pass receivers, the near misses might have been completed, presenting the Warriors a tougher contest. ? The earliest Cardinal penetration followed the first period Warrior touchdown, and placed action on the McHenry 30. With 2 passes missing, a surprise run banged for 9 yds. and a 4th and 1 situation. But senior guard Nowicki slashed through on the next play and brought Peters down for a 5 yd. loss, ending the 40 yd. drive. Another Dundee push came after a Warrior punt from their own 17. The Cardinal thrower hit his target for 24 yds. to the McHenry 18, but this time Warrior end Gende crashed in for a big 7 yd. loss, then followed up on the next play for a rare defensive display. As Peters let go with a toss, Gende leaped and deflected the ball, then without slowing down ran to the other side of the quarter back, caught the ball, and ran it back to midfield. Peters A Problem But one big time the rushers couldn't contain Peters' aerial ability -- one of the 6 Warrior fumbles gave Dundee the ball on the McHenry 46, and 3 runs and a penalty took them to a 1st and 5 on the 31. Utilizing the "shot gun" formation, Peters hit his wide receiver with a short pass that had been eating up small yardage most of the night. But the play developed into a flight down the left sidelines for the last touchdown to be scored against McHenry. A high pass from center on the extra point try changed the play to a run which was stopped inches short of the tieing point. The score was 7-6 with 4:23 in the 3rd quarter. The last Cardinal scoring threat came minutes before the final gun. A leaping Dundee pass interception at midfield was run back to the McHenry 23, where another Peters pass brought 15 rhore. The Warrior lead looked mighty slim -- especially ^when interference was called, and the ball was placed with 1st and goal on the 5. A 5 and a 15 yd. penalty against the offense helped matters, but it was still only 1st down. Warrior linemen once again started cracking helmets, however, and 4 rushed passes netted only 5 yds.. and the threat died on the 21. McH. Dun. Yds. In my humble estimation, it was a "helluva play," matched only by your second touchdown run in the last few minutes of the game. All in all, I'd say you had quite an afternoon! Please accept the congratulations of the entire Broncho Team to you, your fine teammates and your excellent coaches for the terrific job they have done all season. Though we were not able to give you much of a fight the first half, you were playing against our "best" the second half. The fact remains that our "best" was not quite good enough, and a fine group of well coached "Warriors" brought home the Conference Championship to McHenry. We all feel, you certainly deserve the honor. In Johnsburg Benefit of Hettermann's Softball Team. j RECAP OF A GREAT SEASON By Ernie Useman When asked what he thought the chances were of reaching the top in the 1961 season, Paul Mandli cautiously stated, "If injuries are held to a minimum, and with a few breaks and a few prayers, we may be a rough team." Looking back, the gleeful head coach recalled, "We had our share of the breaks, injuries did hold off but started to hurt during the last few games, and our prayers were being answered. It's what I needed and it's what I got -- that should satisfy any coach." Suggesting the difficulty of the North Suburban Conference, he added, "The boys gave their all every minute of the season, but they had to-- those teams don't give anything away!" The final standings show that just a couple mistakes anytime during the season could have made a great difference in the Warrior title chase. McHenry had no "g i f t" games, and scores were made through ability and not generosity, as a brief account of the season suggests. FRIDAY, SEPT. 15 The Warriors smashed Antioch in their season opener and gave some indication of what could be expected. A DeCicco to Fletcher pass for 18 yds., R. Freund's 12 yd. dash, an end run by DeCicco, a 49 yd. gallop by Morenz, and Rourke's 11 yd. run, provided McHenry scores. The question of whether McHenry was that good or Antioch was that bad was posed-- it is now answered. FINAL SCORE: 31-0 FRIDAY, SEPT. 22 The first real Warrior test found them battling Zion-Benton and pouring rain. Frequent fumbles negated long Warrior drives, as 373 yds. were gained rushing, but the only score was in the McHenry column. Late in the last quarter Morenz plunged from the 3 for his second '61 T.D. The Warrior defense showed its stuff by holding speedsters Payne and Cox. FINAL SCORE: 6-0 SATURDAY, SEPT. 80: A Homecoming spirited Libertyville squad held the Warriors scoreless through another wind-whipped rainy game, and became the only team not to fall prey to McHenry's offense. Warrior life was absent from portions of the game, but returned crucially to halt a final Wildcat T.D. drive. Statistics favored Libertyville 157-146 in total yds. gained. FINAL SCORE: 0-0 FRIDAY, OCT. 6: For the first time since joining the N. S. Conferencet in 1953, the Warriors defeated Crystal Lake. Scores , came on a DeCicco option flip to R. Freund, two DeCicco Q.B. sneaks, and T. Freund's 47 yd. carry. Faunt's kicking ability first showed as he hit 3 of 4 PAT's. FINAL SCORE: 27-0 FRIDAY, OCT. 13: Four conference records fell as the Warrior defense scored more points than the offense in McHenry's Homecoming trounce over Woodstock. Total points, number of touchdowns (9). longest run (98yds.), and extra points (5), set new marks in the game falsely claimed "unsportsmanlike" by the losers. FINAL SCORE: 60-0 SATURDAY, OCT. 21: DeCicco's quarterback sneak and a 20 yd. (ball carried 38 yds.) field goal by Faunt won this "Championship" duel uith Palatine. Marutka's plunge with 48 seconds left marked the first score against McHenry. Big Pirate losses kept their rushing yardage to 64, with the fullback gaining 48. FINAL SCORE: 9-6 SATURDAY, OCT. 28: The Warriors cinched their first conference championship by overcoming a Barrington lead in the last quarter. Injuries weakened the 2nd half Warrior defense, and the Broncos took advantage by leading with 2 quick 3rd quarter T.D.'s; but R. Freund's 33 yd. run put McHenry ahead to stay.
