It wasn't a case of another good man biting the dust. Nope. The McHenry Warriors had beaten a strong Barrington football team in a come from behind test by a score of 21 to 19. With that victory came the first MCHS football championship since joining the powerful North Suburban loop. We congratulate a fine bunch of fellows who played with both skill and determination to bring the honors to McHenry and our school. We also congratulate Coach Paul Mandli and his assistants. They worked just as hard as the boys and must have all shared the great thrill of seeing the boys hoist Coach Mandli to their shoulders and carry him from the field. It is our theory that the coaches deserve praise for winning. The Good Lord knows they get the blame for losing. have their friends and all good sports fans join them for a night of fun and funds. We were surprised and a bit stunned to hear that Bill Miller (son of Mrs. Anna Miller of John Street) passed away. Bijl has lived in - the Cary- Grove area for some time. 'Twould be hard to think of any nicer fellow than Bill. He left too soon. Daily Pinups Sympathy is sort of like soothing syrup -- the more you get the more you want. The championship has been won, but nobody wants to see our team let down one little bit in this final tussle. We hope the boys will be up for the game. Nobody has pushed them around so far. Had a fine time at a testimonial dinner for A1 Purvey at McHenry Country Club Saturday night. We didn't tell them that we worked on those greens and fairways before A1 did -- forty years ago. Yep. It was a great trio of Andrew Eddy, his. son 'Toots" and Yours Truly who were trying to do something to make something out of the course when A1 was hired and soon showed us how. We drove a "Cletrac" tractor pulling mowers over the fairways and had to stop every few feet to pull roots or stones out of the clogged mowers. They bought that tractor from Joe Hettermann and it was steered by a bar -- not a steering wheel. Man, that was a ricky little number! We didn't get a chance to talk with A1 and Vera very long, but know they would get a chuckle over stories of those early days of McHenry Country Club. SHAMROCKS -- Gene Freund tells us the McHenry Shamrocks held a meeting on Monday night of this week at his parents' residence where plans were made for a fund raising party at Joe's Tap on Saturday night of this week. It is near Thanksgiving time so you can bet there will be turkeys aplenty. There will also be a good lunch. Roland Koerper, far from his best form was forced into third place by the Barrington runners. Koerper, however, has had a very fine season, finishing first in 9 of 12 races this fall. Other McHenry runners who took part in the scoring were Baur, McDonald, Harris, and Steuben. The Frosh-Soph lost 'their race 19-38, Creighton being nosed out of first place by 1/10 of a second. Other runners who scored were Frett, Mauch, Dimon, and Snell. TEAM BEATS GRAYSLAKE Running on a damp, slow c o u r s e t h e V a r s i t y C r o s s - Country team defeated the Grayslake squad 22-39. Roland Koerper again led the way to the finish line. He was followed by Baur in 3rd, Lishamer 5th, Harris 6th, Fletcher 7th, McDonald 8th, Creighton 9th, Paul 12th, Hachmeister 13th, and Hastings 14th. The Frosh-Soph lost a close run 27-28. Weirich finished in 1st place, Moore 3rd, Dimon 5th, Snell 9th, and Mauch 10th. Today both squads are running against Barrington on their home course. Saturday the Varsity squad will run in the District Meet at Crystal Lake, and on next Tuesday they will wind up the Crosscountry season by participating in the Conference Meet also being run at Crystal Lake. Sat. & Sun. from 2 p.m. With its confidence restored by a workmanlike 7-6 triumph over Mundelein last weekend, Marian Central faces three strong foes in three home games to bring a successful season to a smashing climax. Marian owns a 6-1 season record and plays teams from Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois in increasingly strong challenges. One major lineup change that helped earn the win at Libertyville will remain for the rest of the season, Coach Tom Parsley said this week. Ed Crowley, 175 pound junior end and one of the fastest players on the team, was moved to halfback during the week to give more punch to Marian's offense. The move helped as Crowley carried several times during the scoring drive and also bolted over the goal line for the decisive extra point. To compensate for Crowley's shift, Parsley moved Ron Reckemp, Harvard sophomore, from reserve halfback to end. During the week it became apparent that Mike O'Leary will not recover from a shoulder injury sustained before the season started, so the Hurricanes demanded immediate help at the halfback spots. Crowley played the position as a freshman. O'Leary saw his first action a week ago against Beloit Catholic and reinjured the shoulder. Campion, a private Catholic school at Prairie du Chein, Wis., owns a 5-3 season record and has defeated some good teams. Pass interceptions, by Pete Parker and Chuck Thillman helpel stifle Lee Weston's shotgun offense, pointing up the alert defense the Hurricanes have fielded all year. Marian has intercepted 11 passes, and have limited all foe's pass completion to 12 out of 50 attempted. By contrast, Marian's trio of fine quarterbacks-- Mike Purvey, Bill Riley, and Wally Bowman-- have completed 46 out of 97 for a total of 618 yards. Mike Purvey has completed 26 out of 47; Riley 15 out of 35, and Bowman 5 out of 13. But, it was an unheralded halfback's pass that caught Mundelein by surprise and enabled Marian to come from behind for the victory. Steve Sexton entered the game after Marian had marched from its own 45-yard line to the foe's 9% yard line. On the third down, Sexton rolled to his left and looked for left end Ron Reckamp' in the left end zone. But Reckamp had gone downfield and cut toward the center-- where Sexton hit him with a game-tieing touchdown pass. Crowley scored the leading point with a charge through the line. The too-close contest provided four season "firsts" for Mandli's crew, all but one being on the undesirable Nside. 1. Victory earned Warriors first crown since entering North Suburban Conference. 2. Most points scored against McHenry. 3. Warriors trailed at one point, 19-14. 4. Overall yards gained favored Barrington, But the final score decides the victor -- not how that score was achieved. And a very proud city can now claim 3 coaches and 34 boys as being "Champs" in the greatest respect. Hammering through Zion Benton, Libertyville, and Palatine was no easy chore, but the Bronco battle undoubtedly provided the most hapless -- and happy -- minutes any coach, team, or fan could expect to experience. Misleading First Half The first half appeared to be just 24 more minutes of a Warrior romp, as the Bronco's left the field on the short end of a 14-0 score. Early McHenry strategy clicked as a fake punt, driving runs, and a short pass took action to the Bronco 17. But an example of Barrington power held the Warriors to 4th and 10 on the 7, and a strong headwind helped to slice Faunt's field goal attempt. The longest Warrior T.D. drive came after an exchange of punts and T. Freund's pass interception on the second Bronco play. A DeCicco to Fletcher pass got a first down on the Barrington 46, and 2 more were added in 2 attempts as Morenz bounded threw gaping holes off tackle for 25 yards. Two DeCicco runs brought 6, and Faunt presented a 4th and 1 situation on the 11 -- the reliable quarterback sneak got an extra yard for 1st and goal on the 9. The Bronco's seemed to be making their 2nd stand as 2 plays gained only 3 yds., btrt" Faunt snared another accurate DeCicco pass on the 3 and battered over for the first 6 points with 7:44 left in the half. Faunt's extra point kick made the lead 7-0. Barrington retaliated with 2 quick first downs after kickoff, but they again painfully ular on the team, was moved from left end to right end to permit Reckamp and Mike Williams to share left duties. A nice kickoff return by Gary Church helped set up Marian's touchdown march. Parker's interception in the waning moments not only killed a Mundelein drive but added a sparkle to the Hurricanes's defense as he raced 42 yards before being tackled. With a Willy Mays shoestring catch on his 40, R. Freund snagged a Barrington pass and left 11 Broncos in the dust, galloping' 60 yds. along the left sidelines to the 13th point. The 14 th was easily an. nexed on a fake kick and run by DeCicco. Just 2 minutes later linebacker Morenz added one more interception to the Warrior total, and started what looked to be another T.D. play. At midfield the Warrior cocaptain started around his right side, and as a tackier brought him down on the 30 he lateralled to Miller who fought to the 7. But officials ruled the lateral to be forward, and action was returned to the 35. Three passes got nowhere, and a fake field goal and incomplete pass nearly ran out the remaining 14 seconds. Nearly Fatal Second Half What appeared to be two entirely different teams entered the game's second half, as the Bronco's displayed the fire and wallop expected of them -- and often shown -- the entire year, and McHenry made an indication that the game was "in the bag." Pounding Barrington backs and a smashing line which averaged almost 40 lbs. per man more than Hutchinson and Seaton's biggest, combined to give McHenry its biggest scare -- and bruises-- of the season. The fact that 4 top Warrior defenders were almost entirely absent from second half play did not help matters. Defensive center Mars, sidelined by a pinched back nerve, guards Nowicki and Dowhin, both ailing from first half injuries, and L. Freund, viewed the game's remainder from the bench. Barrington wasted no time in getting to the McHenry 23, but Morenz jarred the ball loose on a cracking tackle and Miller recovered. But the Warrior offense couldn't move and a punt set up the first Bronco touchdown covering 59 yards. Two sweeping runs and a 15 yd. penalty quickly placed the ball on the 13| and a first down was gained' on the 2 just 3 plays later. With 3:28 left in the quarter, a Bronco back banged over the1 season's second sixpointer to be scored against McHenry. The extra point kick failed, leaving a still safe Warrior lead. But in 1 minute 26 seconds the lead was cut to 1 point, as Barrington pounced on a Warrior fumble 16 yds. from another T.D. A run for 11 and short pass provided the second Bronco score, and a successful kick tightened the total at 14-13. The 3rd period ended with McHenry once again finding the opposing line too much to penetrate, and the Warriror punt was downed on the Bronco 33. Facing a strong wind, the dangerous Barrington aeri offense showed they coul make it on the ground as well. Sixty seven yards and 6 minutes later the powerfully determined Bronco squad became the first team to lead McHenry, as they punched over from a crucial 4th and goal spot on the 2. McHenry fans were dumbfounded -- Barrington went wild. It looked like the Broncos were going to prolong -- if not thwart -- any Warrior title claim. But before they could actually enjoy their glory, Barrington lost it. An unreturnable kick went out of bounds at midfield, and the Bronco defense dug in. But a short gain and 15 yd. penalty pushed 19 yds. to the 31. Morenz sliced for 4, but a reverse lost 6 big yds. and apparently quenched the last Warrior fire. But no flame burned brighter as the light in Coach Mandli's eyes when R. Freund exploded over left tackle on the next play and literally ran by the entire Bronco secondary for 33 fast yards and six 14K points. Faunt's kick made it 21-19 with 3:59 still left in the game. Barrington jaws dropped -- the table had turned in 55 seconds. T. Although their names never appear in the scoring statistics, the Warrior offensive front 7 deserves just as much mention as the touchdown runners, as not one lineman can afford to miss his block if a successful play is to develop. It is unfortunate that too rriany people see only the run or pass and not what preceded it. Because one of the conferences finest tackles; Larry Freund, was unable to finish the season in uniform after sustaining slight concussion in the Palatine game, the entire squad claimed the victory as "Larry's Game." The game wrapped up the title but not the season, as the Warriors still must face an extremely tough Dundee eleven. They whipped scrappy Zion Benton 19-7 and will be even more determined to claim the first and only McHenry defeat. The Warriors brought McHenry its first football crown -- the easiest and most effective way to show your admiration and appreciation is to get out to the last game Friday night at McCracken Field.
