"ANTI-COMMUNIST" GROUPS 'Dear Sirs: ."Several meetings have been held in our community recently claiming to educate our citizens oh the nature and extent of the Communist menace to this country. I would like tc say ,a few words of warning to people who have^ attended or will be asked to attend such meetings, and to contribute time and money to various "anti-Communist" groups. There has been a rapid growth in the number of such groups and there are now a score or more of travelling "schools" and "seminars" not, as far as I can discover, formally connected, though there seems to be considerable informal cooperation among them. When I have been able to ask representatives of some of these groups about their affiliations, the answers have been evasive. I hope that those of you who have ah opportunity to attend one of these "schools" will do so, in onder to get a good understanding of their aims and methods. "If you attend, I hope you will ask something about the background of the people who present the program. Are they trained in history, political science, government, espionage and subversion techniques, or any other field which qualities them to speak as experts on Communism? Who prepared the films, commentary, or pamphlets they present? Who published their books -- a reputable publisher, or an unknown house? "I hope you will ask what they do with their money. Are their accounts audited? What salaries -- and expense accounts -- are provided for the heads of the organization? Do you, as a prospective member, have access to their books and *•9 T/~7 #7' J1 rBAVS/ifi^ SH€>P„ft; sO~ Value Revolving 4-lr'-as set of 15 Indoor •BITS If one goes out, the rest stay lit $3.49 quality Electric motor driven (5 rpm). 12" size; 6' cord BOX OF 12 Chrhtmm Tree 2%" round; choice of bright solid colors. These groups, organized as tax-free corporations, take in vast sums of money -- the leader of one predicted ths^t he would collect a million dollars in 1961. "I don't have the space here to give many examples of ite kind of inquiries that mignt prove valuable, but perhaps someone can help me on one point. "Communism on the Map" is a film which has been widely distributed by these groups, and shown in our community. It is one of many materials produced by the National Education Program, under the leadership of officials of Harding college in Seartr , Ark., which would seem to give it the dignity of academic responsibility. Bift so far I have not been able to get much^ information about Harding college, (a catalog, etc.) or to locate anyone who ever attended Harding college, and I wjbu'd appreciate being puy in touch with anyone who has [first-hand knowledge oi the school. "The aim of "tjieige groups % ie„ to keep the United States free from Communism -- certainly compels our respect. Their methods are sometimes very curious. In the past such groups have attacked a bewildering variety of targets, too long a list to examine here; it ranges from the President of the United States on down to the March of Dimes, Red Crcvs blood banks, and a comniun'y fluoridation project in San Diego. The latter was denounced as a Red effort to poison the naval base. On the other hana. anti-Communism has been used to promote assorted projects. Just now one anti-Communist group is selling a food-supplement project. Another solicits contributions in the amount ot several hundreds of doll»-,s from business firms to suppmt a filing system which, they c l a i m , c o n t a i n s t h e l a r g e s t number of dossiers on known and suspected Communists in the United States. Their files are not open for inspect ion by anyone including, they say, the FBI. It is a wholly private investigatory and security service. •' "In general, I must say t At I believe in letting the FBI and J. Edgar Hoover deal with conspirators, and I have little confidance in the efforts of amateurs to contribute much to the control of professional Communists. If you, yourself, want to know more about the subject, go to your library or book store and get any one of the hundreds of standard, reputable works on the subj&JL You might want to begin with Harry and Bonaro Overstreet's "What We Must Know About Communism." Better still, try to improve your understanding of what has made our country great, and the institutions that insure our continued growth and prosperity. "In conclusion I would like to remind-you of Alexander Hamilton's observation in me first of the Federalist Papers, that good men are often to be found on the wrong side, and bad men on the right side, of every question. I hope that before you join any group or contribute any money to any movement you will be certain that your name and dollars are supporting an honest, intelligent, and genuinely America organization. Custiiis Topics By Ray Zelewsky TV Color Juggling^ When you look at color television, think of a painter mixing colors to get just the right shade. For example: the broadcasting station beams out three signals representing red, green and blue. 30% of red, 59f/r of green and llr/r of blue will make white when you see it on your screen. The camera picks-up, juggles the signf.s, sends them to your color sel, and then the process is reversed and you see the beautiful picture. All this takes a small fraction of a second. It's not much different than the one signal workings of a black and white set. And local folks who used EV 5-3757 or 5-5659 for their B. and W. sets, now use it for color TV, too. We guarantee satisfactLn. A lot of people have traded their B/W TV for color, and one remark you hear most often; "Why didn't we do it sooner?" Visit our showroom at 8418 W. Elm Street for a color demonstration. Today! X.
