To support local safety eamf aigns. Robert A. Campbell, llinois safety coordinator, has outlined the state's effort to reduce deaths on our highways. "Traffic Condition Yellow will be effective for the period of Dee. 18 1o Bee. 22." Campbell said. "During this pre-holiday alert, motorists and pedestrians will be reminded of the hazards of winter and holiday driving." Motorists will be furthei urged, he said, to plan their trips, study traffic regulations and routes, and have their cars safety checked. Last week we made mention of some prize nuts which had been given to us by Mrs. W. E. Bacon of Grayslake, who i had recently won honors in the Tri-State nut show. Mrs. Bacon also gave additional information which may be of interest. 1 She said this year the Carpathian English Walnut tree on the Glenn Bacon farm on Darrell road. McHenry, produced nine bushels of nuts hut a third smaller than usual l>ecause of the heavy crop and early dry weather. This tree grew from a nut planted in April of 1937. A pound of nuts had been purchased from, the Wisconsin j Horticulture society, nuts |hat j were gathered in the Carpathian mountains in the autumn of 1936 by Rev. Carth of Toronto, Cc-.nada, a native cf Poland. Of the nine bearing trees on • Ik Glenn and W. E. Bacon farms, the above, known as No. 8, is proving its superior value. It bears catkins ih profusion, thereby producing plenty of pollen. This year when the husk maggot was quite sevei-e, the nuts on the tree were almost immune, while two bearing trees closeby had nearly two-thirds of their nuts infested. The cross walks in the village have certainly been a a fright during the recent soft spell and from the hundreds of complaints made by our people, we are of the belief that the patience of the people of McHenry is giving out and lhe coming spring will see one of the biggest shake-ups thai the old town has ever seen.
