Those TOPS members can be a pretty confusing group. It is the only club whece the winners-are the lesers ana the losers are the v inners. The Wonder Lake TOPS chapter had a winners (IT was.it losers) party Wednesday. The club divided into two groups on Jan. 1 for a weight- losing contest, which was "to run for three months. Group 2 beat out group 1 by eifht-pounds. Total poundage ltjft by both groups for the ti.ree month period was 157. Tiat's a lot of excess "youk jl»w-what" going down the drain. Anyway the losers (acti ally the gainers) had to entertain the winners at a party which was held yesterday. You sc e the. winners were actually ti e losers--oh forget it. Any- We all had a lot of fun and we had food too!!! Kiwanis Meeting, March 30th The fifth Monday of the months president Floyd turned tbe weeting into a round table discussion with reports from all the committees. Jim Robison reported on Past Presidents Night which will be held, Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at LiGreca's. Phil Kinzer report- 1 ; ed that decorations and table settings all arranged. Last year, 101 Chicago area clubs participated. John Von Kanegan announced he has located a piano. Some strong backs are needed to move. Leoda Freund won The Battle Axe Award. A letter was read from Mrs. Paul Eberle, a recent Battle Axe Award winner. Little League News The Little Leaguers are badly in need of funds to purchase equipment for the coming season so they have designated May 23 as Little League FUND DAY. That's the day we want all of you to dig deep for the kids. There is no more worthy cause than helping to give these kids a summer of good clean sport and fun with their baseball games. Don't forget ---May 23 -- Saturday -- the boys will be around so let's give them a hand. Bridge - Canasta Tournament "Swings Into Spring" With Spring Here??!! The tournament is in high gear and the cards will be scrutinized by the many experts who will gather Sunday evening, April 12, at 7 p.m., Christ the King hall. They really play a wild game. Mr. and Mrs. Kuhlman of McHenry who were subbing for Mr.. and Mrs. Gerald Herkes, were delighted with r grand slam!! The high scoring couple for the evening in Bridge was Mr. and; Mrs. Francis Higgins. Delicious refreshments always top off thftievening. INCREASE IN PARCEL POST RATES APRIL 1 Postmaster LeRoy ,M. Smith reminded residents of the McHenry postal area that an effective date of April 1 has been set fdr new domestic parcel post rate increases. The parcel post increase -- approved recently by the Interstate Commerce commission and averaging about 13.1 percent -- is expected to yield about $75.4 million annually. Catalog rates will be increased approximately 13 percent and will produce added revenue of about $2.4 million if 1962 volume is maintained. The higher rates do not affect air parcel post or international parcel post. Postmaster Smith said he has been advised by Postmaster General John A Gronouski that the decision of the ICC will assist the Post Office department in carrying out its objective of reducing the drain on the Federal treasury by $100 million. The last parcel post increase GARY HADLEY JOINS STAFF OF CHILDREN'S HOME Gary Hardley, ACSW, joined the staff of the Woodstock Children's home March 1, as director of social services. He holds the BS degree from Wheaton college and the MSW from the School of Social Work of Florida State university. For the past three years, he has been associated with the Evangelical Child Welfare agency, Chicago, and has been casework supervisor for the past two. Prior to his work for the Chicago agency, he was a psychiatric social worker with the Veterans Administration center, Gulfport, Miss. He has performed the same services in a Child Guidance center. was on February 1, 1960, the postmaster pointed out. To illustrate the effect of the new rates here, Mr. Smith noted that a six-pound parcel -- which is the average weight -- for local area delivery will cost 37c instead of 32c. Mr. Hardley, his wife; Wilma, arid his four children, Kay Marie, 5, Billy, 4, Brenda, 3, and David, 2, are living at 918 Sumner street in Woodstock. The addition of a director of social services to the staff of the Woodstock Children's home means an extension of services it can offer to the children and to McHenry county. You begin to realize how awkward, bewildered, helpless a lamb really is. David wasn't merely singing of the Lord's faithfulness. He was confessing his own helplessness! The key to religious faith is not simply the discovery of God's power. It is the discovery of our own need. The Lord is OUR Shepherd.
