McHenry Library Corner Main and Green Sts. 2 to 5 p.m. 1 HOURS Friday Evenings: 7 to 9 p.m. Dally, Including Saturday: "The Four Faces" by Han Suyin. Love and lust, international intrigue, adventure--and murder-- are ingredients of this superbly wrought novel set against the colorful background in one marriage and a score of affairs to find something in which to believe and someone in whom she could trust. From the moment they meet, Sheila and Gion are drawn to each other and fall in love. But their love affair is beset by all the difficulties that their totally different backgrounds and heritages impose. In addition, "The Four Faces" is a suspenseful novel of action in which a potential coup d'etat, the Southeast Asia opium trade, and the ill feelings that still exist between East and West in what was once French Indo- China all play an important part. And, as in Han Suyin's earlier novels, there is a broad range of sharply individualized characters including a glamorous fashion designer, a nymphomania a Buddist monk who predicts the past, a number of inept amateur sleuths--and a murderer. Powerful in impact, "The Four Faces" is a memorable blend of fascinating characterization, exotic background, and dramatic action -- qualities which distinguish Han Suyin's novels and have won her a place among the most gifted writers of our time. The Witch's House" by Charlotte Armstrong. . Late cne afternoon, at the end of an average school day, a member of a California university disappears without a trace. He is Pat O'Shea, a popular young mathematics professor who is both happily married and devoted "to his profession. No one- -the police, his friends and colleagues on campus, and least of all his bewildered, dl8-:| traught wife, Anabel-- is able to come up. with a clue leading to-' his whereabouts and explaining why arid how he vanished,. The disappearance of still an- "' other professor, Evefett Adams; only adds to the mystery and confusion, particularly since the two men had little more than a nodding acquaintance. But Anabel refuses to accept the double disappearance as coincidental. After questioning Adam's teen-age daughter, she does some investigating on her own and turns up startling information that implicates a number of people in a bizarre,, nightmarish plot. "; Vf of Cambodia and particularly the awesome ruins of the ancient trniple of Angkor Wat. ' Writing with consummate skill, Han Suyin brings the reader into the heart of a neutralist Congress of Writers summoned ;io ("ombodia to discuss the problems that beset the writer in , a hostile warring world. Inevitably, as the Congress proceeds, the machinations of' those who try to use the occasion to further their own ends draw them into conflict with the Cambodians who ask only to be left in peace. But "The Four Faces" offers much more than a perceptive, illuminating view of thg clash between Kastern and Western ways in life and thought. It is at the ^iir.e time the story of Gion, who has found in the Congress an excuse to return to Angkor, which he had seen before and whose wonders had never left his mind; and of Sheiia Manhfy, who had sought INTRODUCING: MARINA Fox River Grove, 111.
