Thelen of Johnsburg announce the engagement of their daughter, Kathy, to Les Klotz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Klotz, Sr., also of Johnsburg. Miss Thelen will graduate this June from Marian Central Catholic high school. Her fiance is serving in the Navy, stationed on the USS Somerworth in New London, Conn., where he is a radioman, petty officer third class. No wedding date has been set. '"Bridge For Books" Closes Second1 Season "Bridge for Books", a tournament for married couples, closed its second season on Saturday evening at the K. of C. clubhouse with a pot-luck supper, bridge and the awarding of prizes. Following a very close race all year, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Adams emerged winners, and in second place were Mr. and Mrs. Warren Kuhlman. Theresa Marie Wirfs Baptized Sunday Theresa Marie Wirfs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wirfs, was christened Sunday, May 17, by Rev. Fr. Eugene Baumhofer, at St. Mary's church. Mrs. Emil Calvin Gibson, 4710 West Lake Shore drive, McCullom Lake, and Mr. E>ennis Blaha, whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Blaha of Pistakee Highlands, Saturday morning, May 16. The 11:30 a.m. nuptial Mass with exchange of rings, was recited by Father Holmgren. The altar and church in terior were decorated with masses of gladioli, carnations, roses and lilies-of-the-valley-- all white. Sister Andreella and the junior girls' chgj-us provided the music. The lovely young bride was radiant in a full length gown of white satin organza, with a chantilly lace bodice and long sleeves. Iridescent sequins were scattered over the bodice and the skirt, fashioned of many tiers of net and covered with an apron, also of chantilly lace. Her tiny Juliet cap was of chantilly lace and the veil fell gracefully just below the shoulders. The bride's prayer book, satin pillow and blue garter were made for the occasion by her mother-in-law. Mrs. Mary Hamann, the bride's aunt, served as matronof- honor and she was gowned in blue lace and chiffon, with three quarter length sleeves. Her headpiece was a wispy vision of loveliness fashioned of lightweight braid and net, and she carried a bouquet of blue and white fjowers. Miss Carol Miller, the bride's friend, and Miss Sharon Wesol of Chicago were bridesmaids and wore outfits similar to the matron of honor, but in pink. Their wrist corsages were of pink and white flowers. The bride's sister and cousin, Theresa Taylor and Marlene Wesol, served as flower girls dressed all in white, and carried blue and white bouquets. Their headpieces were of blue nylon woven with lilies-of-the-valley. Dominic Bruxer, Jr., of River Grove served his niece and her bridegroom as best man. Groomsmen were Walter Hunt of McHenry and the bride's brother, Elmer Taylor. The groom's nephew, Paul Blaha of Chicago, carried the rings. Dominic Bruxer, Sr., was an usher. For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. Gibson chose a two-piece outfit of royal blue satin with white accessories and a corsage of white and blue. Mrs. Blaha was attired in a street length sheath of navy blue with accessories in a lighter shade, and her corsage was of red and white flowers. The wedding breakfast was catered in the bride's home for fifteen adults and five children. Mrs. Bruxer, the bride's grandmother, took care of the other children. About 250, guests assembled at the Club Lilymoor for the reception, which began at 6:30 p.m. The newly wedded couple planned a visit to her grandparents, then on to Niagara Falls and the New York World's Fair for about one week. Upon their return, they will reside in Fox Lake. The new Mrs. Blaha attended Marian Central high school foxone year and graduated from McHenry, class of '63. She is employed at Magic Slacks in DINNER DANCE y IN CITY MARKS CLOSE OF SCHOOL Marian Fathers club members are planning a gala occasion to mark the completion of a successful school year of service aiding the county-wide parochial high school at Woodstock. The annual dinner dance has been scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at the McHenry VFW, starting at 6:30 p.m. Ben A. Chelini, Jr. and Joseph Gausdon, McHenry, are cochairmen,. One of the highlights will be the installation of officers. A nominating committee now is preparing its report. Robert Amore, retiring president,, advises members to obtain their tickets soon from their advisory board member since this has proven a popular event in past years. Lay teachers at Marian Central and their spouses will be guests of the Marian Fathers club for this event. The Rev. Eugene Baumhofer, pastor at McHenry and Marian's first superintendent will be master of ceremonies. ANNUAL MEETING OF HISTORICAL SOCIETY HELD The first annual meeting of the McHenry County Historical society was held at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 18, in the old Opera House, Woodstock. Robert L. Brubaker, manuscript librarian of the Illinois State Historical Library at Springfield, was speaker and the subject of his talk concerned "the care and handling of manuscripts and museum objects. An original copy of the program at the time of the unveiling of the Soldiers and Sailors of 1861-1865 monument has been given to the society by Clyde Gates of Woodstock His father, Nelson Gates, enlisted from Woodstock in the 95th Regiment of the Union Army. The blue campaign hat he wore has also been given. The monument stands in City Park, Woodstock Three class rings and a napkin embroidered with the name of a student of Todd school has been turned over by Irving Stein of the Woodstock Residence. These were found •>n dismantling the old Wallingford Hall of Todd school. All organizations ih the county are urged to write up the history of thjpir organization and send a copy to the society, along with pictures if possible. FLORENCE KNOX TO BE HONORED ON RETIREMENT The many McHenry friends of Miss Florence Knox of Crystal Lake, a resident of the Terra Cotta area for many years, will be happy to learn that she will be honored at a reception next Sunday, May 24. Miss Knox will be retiring on June 5 from her teaching duties at Central Elementary school-in Crystal Lake. The beloved teacher, well known throughout this area and the county, has been a teacher in McHenry county for the past fifty years. Miss Knox comes from a family of teachers. Her sister, Mrs. Mabel Wyman, is presently teaching, and her mother and five aunts were teachers. HOLD BENEFIT Peggy Young Hoskins of Morton Grove, a unique fashion soloist of original design, will present her most interesting program for Clipped Wings Charities (United Airlines exstewardess alumnae) at Old Orchard Country club theater, Prospects Heights, on Monday, May 25, at 2 p.m. The proceeds of this affair will be given to the Austin Special School for Retarded Children. Obituaries BRUNO BUfLEfc Bruno T. BtttlCr, 65, of Ringwood died Wednesday afternoon, May 13, about 4:30 o'clock in Memorial hospital, Woodstock, following several months of poor health. Mr. Butler, a resident of Ringwood for forty-seven years, was born in Bath, 111., Jan. 18, 1899. For more than thirty years he operated the Ringwood feed store and lumber yard. About two years ago he purchased the Louis Hawley meat market, from which business he retired recently. Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Butler, well known teacher; two daughters, Helen Ruth Stanek of Whitewater, Wis., and Muriel Benoy of McHenry: six grandchildren; three brothers, Elmer of Haina, 111., Andrew J. (Andy) of McHenry^ and Julian of Waupato, Wash.; and a sister, Mrs. Ada Fornam of San Antonio, Texas. The body rested at the Peter M. Justen & Son funeral home until Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, when Rev. Bruce Breneman of the Ringwood Methodist church officiated at last rites. Burial was in Ringwood cemetery. ALFREDA PAL Mrs. Alfreda Pal, 64, a resident of this community for the last four years, died in her home at 2409 Highwood road, (Griswold Lake vicinity) on Friday, May 15. Mrs. Pal was born Sept. 20, 1899. Arrangements were made by the George R. Justen & Son funeral home, after which the body was taken to Chicago for last rites. GERTRUDE HEIMER Mrs. Stephen (Gertrude) Heimer, a former McHenry resident, died in St. Catherine's hospital, Kenosha, Wis., on Sunday evening, May 17, following a two-week illness. A funeral Mass was sung Wednesday morning in St. Mary's Catholic church, Kenosha, with interment in St. Mary's cemetery, McHenry. Mrs. Heimer resided hese many years ago, when she ana her late husband operated Heimer's tavern on Riverside Drive. They were among the community's most respected business people of that time. One of a family of seven girls and one boy, Mrs. Heimer was a sister of the late John H. Miller. She is survived by a son, Edwin J. of Los Angeles; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Seiger of Kenosha and Celia Chamberlain of Milwaukee; also many nieces and nephews in the McHenry and Kenosha communities. Her husband and a daughter, Helen, preceded her in death, as well as her sisters and one brother. ALLIE COWEN Friends will be sorry to learn of the death in Orlando, Fla., of Mrs. Allie B. Cowen of Harvard, who died last Thursday in her home. She was the wife of William F. Cowen, who was in partnership, for many years, with the late R. I. Overton in a county business known as Overton and Cowen. WILLIAM FLANNIGAN Services were held early this week for William Flannigan, 85, of Castor Valley, Calif., father of John Flannigan of Lakeland Park. Mr. Flannigan died Saturday, May 16, in the home of a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Eggers, with whom he had resided for tmfpast year. The body was taken to the Smith funeral home in Oak Park for funeral arrangements. ACCEPTS POSITION About 200 Illinois State university students completing work for degrees this year have signed contracts for teaching positions starting next fall. Beverly Spohr of McHenry, who will become a bride in ^une, will teach English and French in Dundee Community high school.
