Essay Winners The three young people pictured above have been chosen winners in the essay contest sponsored by the Legion auxiliary of McHenry for Junior high school students. The subject was "Our Great Documents of Freedom." Shown, left to right, are John Anderson, third place; Katherine Francke, second; Libby Stinespring, first; and Betty Lingenfelter, president of the auxiliary^ Following is the first prize winning essay, entitled "We Were, We Arc, We Shall Be," written by Libby Stinespring, an eighth grade student in McHenry Junior high shool, for the American Legion auxiliary -- sponsored contest held on the subject, "Our Great Documents of Freedom." WINNING ESSAY I was a slave. My mother and father were sold at an auction a week ago. Both went for high prices because ithey were good and healthy, but each went to a different bidder. They were brokenhearted when this happened. I don't know how Mother willbe able to take it. I heard that Father ran away. They set the do^s after him, chasing him like an animal through the swamps and the woods. He was caught, and taken back to the plantation. There he received a brutal whipping. The white folks seemed satisfied as the blood, mingled with sweat, rolled off his back. But my father didn't even cry out. He was brave. I was a slave. I used to get up at five every morning to fetch the water for Calpurnia, the cook. Whatever Master Richard and his family didn't eat, we did. There was always plenty of chores to do, such as cleaning the stables or hitching up the horses. When the sun was hot and burning, we had to go to the cotton fields. We picked until we filled our baskets or fell. Yesterday Mr. Lincoln told us colored folks that we were free! He called it the Emancipation Proclamation. I am not a slave anymore. I have my own life now, so let me be the one to live it! I am black, I live in Alabama, Mississippi or Illinois. 1 may be a farmer or a doctor. I have a family. When I come home at night, my kids ask me for food. They cry, but I can't give them food. I may be a Christian or a Jew. We have our own church, with a black minister and a black congregation. When it rains, it pours inside the church. I took my kids to a cafeteria once. My son, George, can't read yet and accidentally he wandered into the white area. He was kicked, shoved, and buffetted arourd so much that he was black and blue before we could reach him. Then Christmas came. I took George and my daughter, Mary, to the downtown department store to see Santa Claus. When we got there, he wouldn't shrike Mary's hand. How can I explain to my broken, confused Mary that Santa Claus following DRSJG STOifiS will be CLOSED MEMORIAL MY from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. will Re-Open at 5 P.M. ROLGErS MILLSTREAM ©HUGS WYE DRUG : won't shake her hand because she's black, because her skin is a different color, Yes, Mr. Lincoln freed me over one hundred years ago, or so thought. I am free, yet I am a slave, slave to the intolerance of white prejudice, slave to the alien world they created. I am a negro. I live in a beautiful apartment with my family. Next door to us live the Joneses. They're white, but that doesn't matter anymore. We often have dinner together, and our daughters are best friends. They go to school together. No one leaves this public school because it is integrated; what is segregation? On Sunday we dways go to church. Our minister is white, our Sunday school superintendent is black. But no one notices these things anymore. People have stopped looking at the world through glasses colored with prejudice and hate. I am black; you are white; yet we are all the same. I live in the future, in the wonderful world the black and white created together, bound with love and understanding and the knowledge we all have the same emotions, the same wants and needs. I love this new world, wouldn't you? NAVY PROGRAM The Navy department in Washington has announced an incentive program to encourage the reenlistment of Navy men who have returned to civilian life.
