Thursday. August 27, 1984 THE McRENRY PLAINDEALER Section Two -- PagiOttC LAKELIID PARK NEWS BARB MEURER -- KAY DRUML 885-4356 SOX DEFEAT CUBS FOR 1964 LITTLE LEAGUE TITLE After a nip and tuck battle for first place all during the fifteen game schedule our league had, our two teams that have the names of those two Chicago rivals ended in a tie for first place. Both the Cubs and Sox had a total of 11 wins and 4 losses. Last Monday a play off took place at Mc Henry's Little League field under the lights. A large crowd saw the Sox defeat this Cubs with a score of 19 to 8. The season was a very exciting one and ended with the Sox in first place, followed by the Cubs. In third place were three teams, Braves, Orioles and Pirates all with 7 wins and 8. losses. Holding down last place were the Tigers with 4 wins and 11 losses. We both hate to see the baseball season all but ended. It means the ending of summer' and the return to school for the youngsters and the confinement of winter months to many of us parents. Our All Star team suffered two defeats over the weekend. Saturday saw the team going to the other side of the lake to be defeated in a very close game. McCullom Lake was the victor in a 14 to 13 score. The teams now have a win a piece. Sunday's weather felt more like football and a nice size crowd watched a pitchers battle between our boys and Hound Lake, who defeated our lads with a 4 to 1 score. The team was host to Wonder Lake on Tuesday of this week. On this coming Saturday the team will travel to Round Lake for their return game. For any of you parents who pick up the paper on Wednesday evening, tonight Wednesday, Aug. 26, there will be an open Little League meeting at the community house at 7:30. All parents are welcome and urged to attend. It's your son's League, why not go down and see if you can be of help. It may seem a long time away but mark your calendars now for Oct. 10. That's the date set for the annual Little League dance. vide a few minutes of entertainment to those we all owe to very much, the veteran's and servicemen who help to keep our country as It is, free from dictatorship. Assistant Scoutmaster and program director, Irv Becker did a wonderful Job as did Committeeman and Lighting director Les Eckhart. Makeup and costume changes were done by the following mothers, Druml, Kamp, 'Becker, Bartos, Ketchum, Wagner, Daurio, Eckhart and Sharon Wagner. Without these people and their devotion to {the dance team, shows would \be impossible to put on but the^nain part of the Dance team and the ones who deserve a great deal of credit and pride are the Scouts of Lakeland Park, Troop 459. The group was to put on their program at Wonder Lake's, Scout Pow-Wow on Monday of this week. For any information for /shows, call Scoutmaster Ed Druml at 385-3070 or Ass't. Scoutmaster Irv Becker at 385- 3437. Scouts and parents are reminded that the troop goes back on its school schedule next week. All Scouts are expected to be on time for meetings. Baseball has ended so all Scouts are expected to be on time, 6:30. Meetings will end around 9 and any parents who wish to talk to the leaders may do so before 9:30 p.m. and after 9 so there will be no breaking up of meetings. Parents who pick up their sons are asked to please be on time. Boy Scout Troop 459 Last Wednesday evening a school bus left the community house loaded with our troops Indian Dance team, leaders and parents. Destination was one of the wards at Downey hospital. Those of us who had the honor of being among those present felt the dance team has never done a finer job. The program was put on outside so that the show could be viewed from the windows of other wards. The reactions and comments of the patients made the Troop very proud. Commander Jim Doran of the V.F.W. and Mrs. Fuhler and her fellow Auxiliary members who made the trip possible for our Scouts were very pleased and said it was the best show the ward had ever seen. Mr. Doran was also most impressed in the way the show has improved since he first saw it. To match the way the Scouts performed was the wonderful conduct of each and' every boy. We have never singled out any one Scout for extra praise as this is a team and is treated as such but this time we feel the chanting of Long Spear (Mark Bartos) deserves a very special pat on the back. It was the first time chanting had been done. The drumming of Running Buck (Bill Eckhart) and Blackhawk (Jerry Zalud) accompanied Mark's chanting and sounded like one of the teams many Indian records. The new way the Snake and War Dances were put on was also very impressive. Kathy Becker, George and Dick did terrific skits during costume changes for the Dance team. The two pantomine skits done by the Scouts were also extra special. All in all it was very wonderful evening and once again we think the team and its leaders should be very proud. Scoutmaster Ed Druml in his full Chief's outfift expressed how deeply grateful the unit was for the V.F.W. units to make it possible for the group to pro- Girl Scouts - Troop 320 All Girl Scouts belonging in Troop 320 and all Brownie flyups from our Brownie troop who will be in this troop are invited to attend a cook-out at Maureen Johnson's home on Monday, Aug. 31, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.fn. A tired group of people got home about 12 p.m. The Meurers attended their company picnic which was held over in Venetian Village on the Lake. A few rain showers didn't even dampen any of the spirits of the people and a wonderful time was had. Games for the kids with prizes being won by Johnny, Shirley and Alan and even Barbara won a prize plus a few aching muscles. Last week the Grizleys went into the city to help Sue's mother, Mrs. Mester, celebrate her birthday. Mrs. Mester is a patient at Illinois Masonic hospital with back problems. Her entire family had cake and the necessary things to try and make her birthday complete. Michael Mester, Sue's nephew, has been staying with the Grizleys the past two weeks. Rose and Ed Oswald had Mrs. Mary Durband of Evanston as their house guest for two days last week. On Wednesday of last week Carol's aunt and Godmother, Marie Neudnfeldt of Michigan, was a surprise visitor. Also on Wednesday her cousins, Florence and Gordon Neudnfeldt of Wisconsin, were visitors. C a r o 1' s wonderful sense of humor is surely helping her through her confinement. The many friends of hers who have been giving her a helping hand are all very wonderful people.
